You can also type / in the composer and select Search. When ChatGPT answers, open its citations and check whether each linked source supports the specific claim you care about. A citation is a starting point for verification—not proof that an answer is correct.
How to search the web in ChatGPT
ChatGPT may search automatically when a question would benefit from current web information. To start a search yourself, use either of these routes:
- In a conversation, select View all tools, then choose Search.
- Alternatively, type / in the composer and select Search.
- Enter a focused question and send it. Include relevant details such as the jurisdiction, date, organization, or software version when the answer depends on them.
For example, instead of asking a broad question about a regulation, specify the country and the date or version you need. That makes it easier to judge whether the pages ChatGPT finds are relevant.
ChatGPT Search is web search, not the search feature for finding existing conversations, projects, or files in your account. OpenAI describes web Search for ChatGPT on its Search help page.

How to open and review ChatGPT citations
- Select a citation attached to a statement to open its linked source. On desktop web, hovering over a citation can preview it.
- If the answer offers a Sources control, open it to inspect cited sources and related links.
- Read the relevant section of each page, rather than judging a citation by its title or by its presence in the answer.
The key question is whether the page supports the exact sentence the citation is attached to. A page about the same general topic may not substantiate a particular number, date, quotation, or conclusion.
How to judge whether a source supports an answer
Use these checks for each important claim:
- Direct support: Does the linked page state or establish the claim, or does the answer stretch what the page says?
- Authority: Is the publisher in a position to know? For consequential claims, look for an authoritative source, preferably the original or primary source.
- Date and version: Is the material current enough for the question? Check the page’s publication or update date and any relevant edition or version.
- Context: Does the source support the claim in the same jurisdiction, circumstances, or scope the answer describes?
OpenAI warns that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” A citation can lead to useful evidence while still failing one or more of these checks.

When to verify ChatGPT’s answer independently
Verify important facts directly in their original sources before relying on them. OpenAI says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading information, including fabricated quotations, studies, citations, and references. Its guidance is: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.”
This matters especially for consequential decisions and for claims involving quotations, data, technical details, or external references. Follow the citation to the underlying material and confirm the relevant wording or evidence yourself; if a citation does not support the statement, seek a better source rather than treating the answer’s confident tone as confirmation. What to do if Search is missing or unavailable
ChatGPT’s interface and feature eligibility can change. If you cannot find Search, try these checks:
- Start a new conversation and look in View all tools.
- Update the ChatGPT app, or try ChatGPT on chatgpt.com.
- Check that you are using the intended account or workspace, and whether plan usage limits apply.
- If you use a managed workspace, ask its administrator whether Search is enabled for your role.
OpenAI’s help page lists web search access for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and says people who are not signed in can also use web search. Searches are subject to plan usage limits, and some features have additional eligibility requirements. Availability and interface controls may change; consult the current Search help page for the latest details.
