Then treat the first answer as a draft: use focused follow-ups to correct gaps or refine it. Save preferences you want to apply across conversations in custom instructions. None of these steps guarantees accuracy, so check important claims before relying on them.
Start with a clear, contextual prompt
A useful prompt tells ChatGPT what you want it to do and supplies the background needed to do it. OpenAI advises making prompts clear and specific and providing enough context for the model to understand the request. A practical structure is task + relevant context + desired result + constraints or format. It is a way to organize a request, not a formula that guarantees a particular answer.
For example, adapt this template to your task:
Help me prepare for [task]. Context: [relevant background]. Focus on [priorities]. Give me [format and level of detail] for [audience]. If anything important is missing, ask me before drafting.
Use only the parts that help. A short request can work when the task is straightforward and the context is obvious. For a more involved request, include the constraints that would change the answer, such as who it is for, what to prioritize, and what form the result should take. OpenAI’s ChatGPT guidance covers clear prompts and context in its prompt engineering best practices and guide to creating a good prompt.

Specify the shape of the answer when it matters
ChatGPT may answer the same task differently depending on the intended reader and use. Add the audience, focus, tone, format, or level of detail if you have a preference. For instance, asking for a beginner-friendly explanation, a short checklist, or two options with their trade-offs gives the request a clearer target than simply asking for “an explanation.”
OpenAI’s prompt-engineering recommendations for the API also emphasize context, outcome, length, format, and style; OpenAI notes that this advice can help ChatGPT users too. These are general prompting suggestions, not ChatGPT settings or a promise that the response will follow every constraint. See OpenAI’s prompt engineering best practices for the API.

Refine the response with follow-ups
Do not assume the first response has to be final. Read it, identify what is missing or off-target, and ask for a targeted revision. OpenAI recommends iterating on prompts and breaking complex workflows into separate follow-up requests. ChatGPT remembers context within a chat, so you can build on the earlier exchange rather than restating everything each time.
- “Keep the structure, but make the explanation suitable for a beginner.”
- “You missed the budget constraint. Revise the options to stay under [amount].”
- “Give me two alternatives and explain the trade-off between them.”
These examples illustrate how to refine a request; they do not guarantee a better or more accurate result. For a complex task, handle one meaningful revision at a time—for example, first ask for an outline, then request a draft, then identify a specific section to revise. OpenAI recommends using separate follow-up prompts for complex workflows in its prompting guidance. Its ChatGPT FAQ also explains that you can ask follow-up questions because ChatGPT remembers context within a chat.

Use custom instructions for preferences that should carry across chats
A prompt sets the requirements for the current task. A follow-up adjusts work in the current conversation. Custom instructions are for information or preferences you want ChatGPT to consider across chats, such as a preferred tone, reading level, response length, or formatting style. Keep a one-time requirement—such as the audience for a particular report—in that task’s prompt rather than making it a standing preference.
Where to find the setting
- On web or desktop: Open Settings → Personalization, enable customization, and enter your instructions.
- On iOS or Android: Open Settings → Customize ChatGPT, enable customization, and enter your instructions.
OpenAI says custom instructions are available on all plans on web, desktop, iOS, and Android. Its help page says changes apply immediately across chats, including existing conversations, and explains how to disable or delete instructions for future conversations. The interface and availability details are documented in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Custom Instructions help page.
Character limits
OpenAI’s help page, accessed in 2026, lists these limits for custom instructions:
| Plans | Character limit listed by OpenAI |
|---|---|
| Free and Go | 1,500 characters |
| Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education | 5,000 characters |
Plan limits can change; check the current Custom Instructions help page if your account shows a different limit.
Review answers before relying on them
Clear requests can help ChatGPT understand what you want, but they cannot ensure that every answer is correct. OpenAI warns that “The model may not always produce correct information.” Check important details—especially claims you plan to act on or share—against reliable sources rather than treating a confident-sounding response as verification. OpenAI’s caution appears in its guidance for educators; the accuracy warning applies beyond the example prompts on that page.
