The skill is an instruction file—not a project-management app, a connection to your tools, or permission to take consequential actions. You need a Dot-enabled account and an environment that supports installing and invoking skills, plus separate authorized access to the tools and project Space you want the Dot to use.
How do I use ChatGPT Dots as a project manager?
Think of the skill as a workflow guide for your Dot, not as an autonomous project-management system. The repository describes a process for coordinating work on software, apps, and games. OpenAI describes Dots as persistent agents that can continue work between conversations using relevant context, connected apps, and a cloud computer or browser. As OpenAI puts it in “Meet dots”, “Your dot is an always-on agent that keeps work moving across your tools and projects.”
That persistence can help a Dot maintain context and track ongoing work, but it does not mean the skill can see every project resource or perform every action. You must make relevant apps or tools available and authorize their connections separately. Messaging, app, and local computer connections serve different purposes; connecting one does not grant access to the others. Local computer access requires the computer to be online with the ChatGPT app open.
What the skill’s workflow covers
- Agree on the goal and observable completion criteria. Describe the intended outcome and how you will know it is complete.
- Break the work into milestones. Ask for small, trackable pieces rather than one vague project assignment.
- Hand implementation tasks to a user-selected thread. The skill’s process uses a chosen implementation conversation rather than assuming the Dot itself will do every task.
- Identify the resulting build and checks. Record which build is being evaluated and what checks apply.
- Test that exact build in its intended environment. The workflow calls for testing the build produced, not treating a task handoff or a successful build as proof of quality.
- Send failures back for fixes, then retest. A fix should lead to a new build and another test cycle.
- Keep project records. The repository calls for progress, decisions, screenshots, and versioned QA evidence in the requested private Space. The Dot should explicitly report missing capabilities and criteria that remain untested.
These are instructions the skill gives an agent; installing it does not establish that any project has passed QA. Review important results and the sources behind them yourself, since Dots can make mistakes.

How do I install and start project-manager skill?
First confirm that your ChatGPT account has Dots and that the environment you plan to use supports both installing and invoking a skill. OpenAI’s “Get started with your dot” documentation explains Dot setup. The repository’s setup recipe uses a downloaded SKILL.md file.
- Check availability and environment support. Make sure Dots are available to your account and the ChatGPT environment offers the skill installation and invocation flow. Local skills require a connected computer.
- Download the skill file. Open the project-manager-skill GitHub repository and download its
SKILL.md. - Upload and install it. Upload the downloaded file to ChatGPT and ask:
Please install this skill as project-manager. - Invoke it with a scoped project brief. Start a message with
@project-manager, then provide the project goal, intended outcome, existing implementation thread, and the project Space where records should be kept. - Provide only relevant access. Connect or authorize the repository, implementation thread, build or runtime environment, test tools, and Space-editing tools the workflow actually needs. Verify that each connection has the required permissions.
If a step is missing from your interface, do not assume the skill can bypass it. Skill support, account eligibility, connection availability, and tool permissions are separate requirements.

Will the skill install in every ChatGPT environment?
No. A downloadable file does not make every ChatGPT environment compatible with skills, nor does it enable Dots on an account where they are unavailable. OpenAI says Dots are rolling out gradually, so eligibility does not guarantee that the feature will appear immediately. Availability conditions are subject to change; check OpenAI’s current Dots documentation before relying on access.

These are the documented Dot eligibility conditions, not a guarantee that a particular workspace has enabled the feature or that its environment supports skill installation. Local skills also require a connected computer.

The skill supplies instructions for a repeatable coordination process. It does not itself connect to a repository, grant credentials, create access to a build or test environment, edit a Space, or authorize the Dot to act without oversight. Those capabilities depend on the environment, available connections, and permissions you provide.

Built-in permissions and approval checks still apply. A skill instruction is not authorization to publish, deploy to production, merge code, spend money, change accounts, or share project material more widely. Give explicit approval where required, and review consequential work. Stopping a Dot also does not undo actions it has already completed.
The GitHub skill is free to download. That does not make Dot access or an eligible ChatGPT plan free, and the repository showed no license on October 2, 2026. If reuse or redistribution rights matter to your use, review the repository’s current license information rather than assuming free download means an unrestricted license.
