You can use BSNL broadband for an always-on FFmpeg stream to YouTube if the connection sustains the stream’s upload bitrate with room to spare. A plan’s advertised speed does not establish that your line will remain stable around the clock. Measure the upload at the streaming location, check your circle’s data policy and post-FUP speed, then test the entire path—including YouTube’s stream-health status and recovery after a failure—before relying on it.

Check whether your BSNL line can sustain the stream

Test the actual connection, at the place and time you intend to stream. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate; a single peak result is not proof of stable 24/7 performance. Run a representative test with the same kind of motion and audio as your planned stream, and watch both upload behavior and YouTube’s stream health. Choose a bitrate below the line’s reliably sustained capacity rather than matching a best-case speed-test result. No published evidence establishes uninterrupted service for a particular BSNL line.

For a rough data estimate, multiply the total video and audio bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate gigabytes transferred in a 24-hour day, using decimal gigabytes and assuming a continuous stream with no overhead. For example, a 5 Mbps video stream alone is about 54 GB per day; audio and protocol overhead add to that. Treat this as a planning estimate, not a billable-data guarantee.

Check your circle’s BSNL plan and FUP

Plan names, availability, fair-usage thresholds and reduced speeds vary by BSNL circle and can change. Check the current terms for your own connection, including what upload speed is available after the FUP threshold. A continuous stream counts toward data use, and a reduced post-FUP speed may no longer support the bitrate you selected.

As dated examples only, a BSNL Chennai Telephones sheet updated October 1, 2025, listed Fibre Neo at up to 50 Mbps to a 3300 GB FUP threshold, then 4 Mbps; Fibre Basic Plus was listed at up to 100 Mbps to 4000 GB, then 4 Mbps. These are Chennai-specific published plan figures, not a national list or confirmation of current availability. Check your circle’s latest terms before choosing a plan.

Set YouTube’s ingest and encoder parameters

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Its RTMPS guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint, application path and port 443. Obtain the ingest details and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, or from the relevant Live Streaming API resource. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommended video bitrates include 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Use YouTube’s table for the full resolution and frame-rate combinations, and select a lower sustainable setting if your line varies. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your BSNL connection.

Configure FFmpeg for your source

There is no single safe command for every always-on stream: the input could be a video file, camera, capture device or generated source, and FFmpeg options depend on the installed build, available codecs and chosen output settings. Start by identifying your source and checking the installed FFmpeg build’s protocol documentation for RTMPS support and options. Set the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance and your measured line. Configure compatible audio as well.

Send the output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest address using the application path and stream key supplied for your broadcast. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, log or support post. Avoid copying a command intended for a different input type or FFmpeg build without checking what each option does; an encoder that cannot open the source or negotiate the expected output will not keep the stream live.

Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and retrieve its ingest details and stream key. Confirm that the broadcast is configured for the intended use.
  2. Start FFmpeg and inspect its output. Confirm that it opens the input, encodes at the intended settings and connects to the RTMPS destination without repeated errors.
  3. Verify YouTube reception. Check that YouTube receives the stream and reports a healthy status. A process that is still running locally does not by itself prove that viewers can receive the stream.
  4. Run a representative test. Include the motion and sound expected in the real stream, and observe the connection during the test rather than relying only on a speed test.
  5. Test likely failures. Work out what happens if the source, FFmpeg process, computer, power or broadband connection fails. Test your restart and reconnection procedure, then decide how quickly you can restore the broadcast.

Neither YouTube’s encoder guidance nor the cited BSNL plan information guarantees line uptime or provides a universal FFmpeg reconnection recipe. Recovery depends on your source, operating system, FFmpeg build and network. Use the installed FFmpeg build’s documentation when evaluating protocol options, and do not assume that a retry setting can recover from every outage.

Account for YouTube’s content rules

Technical availability does not make a stream eligible for monetization or exempt it from copyright rules. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content. Repeating a recording as a live stream does not itself establish that you have the rights to its music, images or other material. Review permissions before broadcasting and use YouTube’s copyright-safety guidance as a checklist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive the stream Wrong ingest address, application path or stream key; RTMPS connection failure; or FFmpeg cannot access the protocol. Compare the destination with the current Live Control Room details, check that the key is current and private, and confirm RTMPS support in your installed FFmpeg build.
YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health Upload is insufficient or variable for the selected bitrate, or the encoder output is not set as intended. Check actual upload behavior and encoder settings. Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a sustainable level, then run another representative test.
The stream works initially but fails after sustained use A source, computer, power or network interruption; an unstable connection; or reaching a plan’s FUP and reduced speed. Check the failure time against connection behavior and your circle’s data terms. Test restart and reconnection procedures for the specific setup.
FFmpeg fails to open or encode the source Input-specific command options, unavailable codec support, or a changed/missing source. Check the FFmpeg error output, input path or device, and codecs supported by the installed build; adjust the command for that source.
Broadband fault persists A line or service fault outside the encoder configuration. Contact BSNL broadband support. BSNL lists 1800-4444 for Bharat Fibre, broadband and landline support; the listing does not promise a repair time or dedicated always-on-stream support.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer and BSNL connection to carry the stream continuously, StreamNeo is the #1 alternative to try: it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera input.
