AWS Elemental MediaPackage does not create or loop a playlist, and it is not a direct YouTube publisher. It receives a live stream from an upstream encoder, then packages that stream for playback through an endpoint. To run prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube, you need a separate playlist-capable playout and encoding layer. That layer must send a YouTube-compatible stream to YouTube; if you also need MediaPackage, confirm the encoder can send to both destinations or design a separate relay.
Understand the roles before building the workflow
Think of the workflow as separate components with separate jobs. MediaPackage sits between a live input and playback clients; YouTube has its own ingest destination. A playlist loop belongs in the playout layer, not in MediaPackage.
| Component | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist playout and encoder | Continuously selects prerecorded videos, encodes them, and sends a live feed to configured destinations. | Support for MediaPackage and YouTube at the same time depends on the encoder. Do not assume it can deliver to both. |
| AWS Elemental MediaPackage | Receives an encoder input on a channel and dynamically packages the stream for a configured endpoint. | It is not the playlist scheduler or a documented direct publisher to YouTube. |
| YouTube Live | Accepts a live encoder feed at the stream URL using the associated stream key. | Its ingest URL and key are separate from MediaPackage’s input credentials and endpoint. |
A simple arrangement is a playlist encoder sending one output to YouTube and another to MediaPackage, if that encoder supports both outputs and the protocols each destination requires. Another arrangement can use a relay that reads a MediaPackage endpoint and publishes to YouTube, but compatibility, latency, and relay behavior must be verified for the specific software. MediaPackage does not guarantee either arrangement.
Check YouTube eligibility and plan the stream
Before provisioning the AWS side, confirm the channel is eligible to livestream: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day.

- Decide whether MediaPackage is actually needed. If the sole goal is looping prerecorded videos on YouTube, MediaPackage adds an origin-and-packaging layer that YouTube does not require. Use it when you have a separate need for packaged endpoint delivery.
- Choose the playout and encoder layer. It must play the authorized playlist continuously and encode a format accepted by each destination. Check playlist transitions, looping or scheduling controls, failure recovery, monitoring, and whether it can output to YouTube and MediaPackage concurrently.
- Choose the MediaPackage generation and endpoint format. AWS’s configuration guidance differs by service generation, and supported formats and codecs depend on endpoint type. Select the format required by the downstream player or CDN; do not assume an endpoint format is also a YouTube ingest format.
- Plan sessions around YouTube archiving. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need an archive, plan session lengths and verify current YouTube behavior before relying on it. A continuous channel strategy may require ending and restarting sessions, which can interrupt playback and should be tested.
- Clear rights for the entire playlist. Use video, music, artwork, and other material you are authorized to stream. A 24/7 format does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee monetization; review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for the channel and content.
Set up the MediaPackage input and endpoint
- Create a MediaPackage channel. In the AWS Elemental MediaPackage console, create a channel for the live input. The channel represents the stream coming from the encoder; it does not contain or schedule your video playlist.
- Use the generated input URL and credentials in the encoder. For standard MediaPackage live input, AWS documents HLS pushed over HTTPS using WebDAV and digest authentication. Enter the MediaPackage-generated URL and credentials in the upstream encoder’s MediaPackage destination configuration. Do not substitute the YouTube stream URL or key here.
- Match settings on redundant inputs. If using input redundancy, configure the redundant encoder streams with matching settings. Confirm that the selected encoder and MediaPackage setup support the intended failover behavior.
- Create an output endpoint. Configure the endpoint packaging format and any required access-control or encryption settings for the downstream player or CDN. MediaPackage packages dynamically according to endpoint settings; it is the endpoint consumer that requests the packaged content.
- Validate the endpoint independently. Before involving YouTube, confirm the encoder is reaching the channel and that a permitted downstream client can retrieve and play the endpoint output. This tests the MediaPackage path, not YouTube ingest.
Configure the separate YouTube destination
- Create or select the livestream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the stream URL and stream key for the intended live stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Add YouTube as an encoder destination. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the playlist encoder’s YouTube output configuration. If the encoder cannot send to YouTube and MediaPackage simultaneously, use a different supported design rather than assuming the MediaPackage endpoint can push to YouTube.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, place it in public logs, or share it with people who should not control the stream. Reset it if compromised, then update the encoder configuration.
- Use YouTube’s own ingest profile. MediaPackage’s input protocol and endpoint settings do not automatically satisfy YouTube ingest requirements. For YouTube HLS ingest, Google specifies MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Configure these on the YouTube output only if using that ingest method; otherwise follow the requirements for the YouTube ingest protocol you selected.
Test the full route before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short authorized playlist. Confirm the encoder advances between videos, handles the end of a video, and continues into the next item without an unintended gap or black screen.
- Check each destination separately. Verify that the MediaPackage endpoint is reachable by its intended player or CDN, and that YouTube receives the feed and shows a healthy preview in Studio. A working endpoint does not prove that YouTube ingest is configured correctly.
- Review audio and video at transitions. Listen and watch through at least one playlist change. Check for missing audio, abrupt level changes, frozen frames, aspect-ratio problems, or output format changes that could disrupt the live feed.
- Test recovery and failover. Where relevant, test encoder or input failover and observe what viewers see during the change. Confirm what happens if the playlist source, encoder, network path, or YouTube connection fails; do not infer automatic recovery from the presence of MediaPackage alone.
- Monitor after launch. Watch YouTube stream health and the MediaPackage path, and keep an operator able to respond to a failed source, bad playlist item, or expired or reset credential. A 24/7 design still needs operational monitoring.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube has no incoming video | YouTube destination URL/key, channel eligibility, encoder output, or ingest protocol. | Recheck the YouTube URL and key in the encoder, confirm livestream access is active, then inspect the encoder’s destination status and YouTube Studio preview. |
| MediaPackage channel receives no input | MediaPackage input URL, credentials, protocol, or encoder configuration. | Use the generated input URL and credentials; for standard live input, verify HTTPS, HLS over WebDAV, and digest authentication. Confirm the encoder is targeting MediaPackage rather than the YouTube ingest address. |
| Endpoint playback fails although input is active | Endpoint format, access or encryption settings, or downstream player compatibility. | Check the endpoint’s packaging configuration and consumer requirements. Supported formats vary by endpoint type; test with an appropriate downstream client. |
| YouTube HLS ingest rejects or stalls segments | Segment format or duration, HTTP method, byte-range use, or playlist window. | For YouTube HLS, check TS segments at 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. |
| Stream breaks at a playlist transition | Source file variation, encoder transition behavior, or destination tolerance. | Test transitions with representative files. Check that the encoder maintains a continuous compatible output rather than changing formats unexpectedly. |
| Stream stops after running for hours | Encoder uptime, source availability, network path, session duration, or YouTube behavior. | Inspect encoder and destination logs, verify recovery behavior, and plan around YouTube’s documented automatic archive behavior for streams under 12 hours. Verify current platform behavior before depending on a particular session pattern. |
Cost and operational trade-offs
This architecture can involve separate costs for MediaPackage, the compute or hosted service running playlist playout and encoding, data transfer, and any downstream delivery. The exact AWS bill depends on the chosen service generation, configuration, traffic, and region; no total can be calculated from the workflow alone. Include monitoring and recovery effort in the comparison, not only service charges.
If your requirement is simply an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream, compare the operational burden of managing the playlist encoder, credentials, session interruptions, and monitoring against a hosted prerecorded-streaming option. YouTube identifies Gyre as one hosted tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams; confirm its current capabilities and compatibility separately. No specific third-party encoder’s simultaneous MediaPackage/YouTube compatibility should be assumed.
