For ordinary gaming streams, add graphics as sources in an OBS scene and stream that composed scene. If another app needs the same composition as a webcam feed, use OBS Virtual Camera. For a VR avatar or real player composited into a game-aware scene, use a compatible mixed-reality capture tool such as LIV; that requires supported game integration and more setup than a standard overlay.
What counts as AR or 3D graphics in a stream?
A graphic appearing over gameplay is not automatically augmented reality. A static nameplate, alert, frame, or animated overlay is usually a flat element layered into the outgoing video. It can look three-dimensional, but it does not necessarily know where objects are in the game or respond to camera perspective.
Mixed-reality capture is different: it can combine a real player or camera image with virtual game elements in a way tied to the game scene. That depends on game support, camera setup, and alignment. Ordinary OBS composition is the practical choice for most desktop overlays; LIV is aimed at supported VR mixed-reality workflows.
How do I add 3D graphics to a standard desktop gaming stream?
- Create an OBS scene. In OBS, add the game capture and any camera or graphic elements you want viewers to see. A conventional image, browser-based graphic, or animation can be included as a source in the composition. Arrange the sources in the scene, then check the composed output before streaming.
- Choose what the audience should see. Keep the game readable and place graphics where they do not obscure important interface elements. If a graphic is meant to track a game object or change with scene depth, a normal flat overlay will not provide that game-aware behavior on its own.
- Test the scene in the actual destination. Check that the game, camera, and graphics appear as intended and that the receiving service or application accepts the output you are sending. OBS’s scene-based composition is the conventional desktop streaming model described in the CHI 2022 paper on interactive 3D game views for spectators; that paper’s research prototype is distinct from ordinary OBS overlays.
Can I use OBS as a virtual camera?
Yes. OBS Virtual Camera can present an OBS composition to an application that accepts webcam video. OBS documents four output choices: Program, Preview, Scene, or Source. Start the feature from the Controls dock, then select the output appropriate to the receiving application. See the OBS Virtual Camera Guide for the current controls and details.

- Program: use this when the receiving application should see the normal OBS output.
- Preview: use cautiously in Studio Mode. OBS warns that Preview output exposes scene changes, including edits that you may intend to keep private until they are on Program.
- Scene or Source: choose these when the destination should receive one particular scene or source rather than the normal composed output.
Virtual Camera is useful when direct screen capture is unavailable but webcam input is supported. Test the chosen mode inside the destination app before going live; the app’s camera handling and the platform’s streaming route are separate from OBS’s composition.
How can I put a VR avatar or real player into gameplay?
Use a mixed-reality capture workflow supported by the particular game and platform. LIV describes its creator tools as capturing supported games, while its SDK is for developers adding LIV support to games—not something creators need to install just to capture an already-supported title. Check LIV’s current overview for the mode and compatibility requirements relevant to your game.

- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation

- VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
- Confirm compatibility first. Verify that the game and the selected LIV capture mode support your intended setup. Requirements vary by mode; for example, requirements documented for Presence Platform capture should not be assumed to apply to every LIV workflow.
- Start mixed-reality capture and select the camera. Add or choose the camera device and set a resolution that matches it. LIV’s setup guidance also calls out ARGB when using NVIDIA Broadcast in the described setup. Consult the LIV mixed-reality setup guide for the current device and mode-specific steps.
- Check the composite in LIV. Look at the output rather than relying only on an initial preview. Verify player foreground behavior, alignment and calibration, and controller latency.
- Send LIV’s output to OBS. Capture the LIV Output window in OBS, then include it in the scene you intend to stream. Confirm the complete composed view and the receiving platform before going live.
- Plan for background separation if using a real camera. LIV states in its mixed-reality guidance: “For real cameras, LIV does not have a live segmentation (background removal) at this time.” Its guidance recommends a green screen with calibration for this use. A green screen is specific to that camera-based mixed-reality case, not a requirement for ordinary stream overlays.
Which approach should I choose?
| Approach | What it composites | Tracking or depth | Setup and compatibility | Output destination |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS scene graphics | Gameplay plus flat graphic, camera, or other scene sources | Positioned in the video composition; game-aware tracking is not inherent | General desktop composition; test the source and layout in your scene | OBS stream output |
| OBS Virtual Camera | An OBS Program, Preview, Scene, or Source output | Inherits the selected video composition; it does not create depth-aware graphics | Requires a destination application that accepts webcam video; Preview can expose Studio Mode edits | Webcam-capable application |
| LIV mixed-reality capture | Real player or camera footage with virtual game elements | Depends on supported game integration and alignment or calibration | Game-, mode-, platform-, and camera-specific; verify current instructions | Capture LIV’s output in OBS or use the supported workflow |
There is also a research concept beyond these creator workflows: a spectator-controlled 3D game view reconstructed from depth and camera data. The CHI 2022 paper describes such a research system; it is not something a conventional OBS overlay turns on.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The receiving app does not show OBS Virtual Camera: confirm that Virtual Camera is started from OBS’s Controls dock, then check the camera selection and permissions in the destination application. Test with another webcam-capable app to isolate whether the issue is OBS output or the destination.
- Private scene edits appear in the webcam feed: the selected output may be Preview. Switch to Program if the destination should only see the normal OBS output, and verify the result before editing in Studio Mode.
- The LIV composite looks misaligned or the player is not cleanly in front: revisit the camera device and resolution, alignment/calibration, and foreground behavior. Test the output and controller latency rather than assuming the initial preview is correct.
- A real camera’s background remains visible: LIV’s documented real-camera workflow does not provide live segmentation. Follow its green-screen and calibration guidance if that capture mode fits your setup.
- The game or capture mode will not work: check support for that specific game, platform, and LIV mode. Do not apply runtime instructions for one mode to all others.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from live gaming capture: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud rather than sending a live camera or gameplay feed. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
