Eyes captures the stories as visual checkpoints; the first run establishes baselines, and later runs flag differences for a person to review in the Applitools Dashboard. For an in-Storybook workflow, Applitools also offers an Eyes Storybook addon.
What Eyes checks in a Storybook project
Storybook stories make individual component states available for screenshot comparison. A story might represent a button’s hover state, a form’s error state, an empty result, or a loading indicator. Eyes captures the states represented by the stories you run; it does not create missing stories or test states your Storybook does not describe. Build coverage by adding stories for the visual states that matter to your users and design system.
The documented package for the SDK route is @applitools/eyes-storybook. The integration captures visual checkpoints and compares them with saved baselines. Applitools describes the broader Eyes workflow as an SDK integrated with the test suite, a driver that interacts with the application and supplies screenshots, an Eyes server that stores and compares images, and a Test Manager where reviewers inspect results and manage baselines. See Applitools’ Storybook documentation and its visual testing overview.

These are the commands in Applitools’ current Storybook quick start. The runner can start the Storybook development server or use an existing Storybook URL. The URL shown above assumes a local Storybook available on port 6006; use the URL and port your own server exposes when they differ.
Understand baselines and review differences
First run: establish reference images
On the first run, Eyes creates baselines for each captured story and environment. Those images become the reference against which later checkpoints are compared. Make sure the stories and visual states you expect to protect are included before treating the baseline set as complete.
Later runs: inspect and decide
A difference is a signal for review, not automatically a defect. In the Dashboard, inspect the changed area in context. If the UI change is intended, accept it and save the updated baseline. If it is unexpected, reject the change and investigate the component, styling, data, or rendering conditions that produced it. This human decision keeps an intentional design update from being mistaken for a regression, and prevents an unintended change from silently becoming the new reference.
Applitools’ general visual-testing material explains the baseline-and-diff process in its Test Manager documentation. Keep baseline review as an explicit step in the team’s change process rather than accepting all differences indiscriminately.

Choose the CLI or the Storybook addon
| Route | Where it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Eyes Storybook CLI | Command-line runs in development or a pipeline | Run npx eyes-storybook to start Storybook, or pass an existing Storybook URL with -u. Review results through the Dashboard link. |
| Eyes Addon for Storybook | UI-first runs and triage from within Storybook | Applitools presents the addon as a way to run and triage tests in Storybook. Its product page says results stream back as runs complete and are grouped to match Storybook structure. |
Applitools describes interactive development runs and headless pipeline runs using the same applitools.config.js. The exact fit depends on your Storybook version and environment; the cited setup material does not provide a complete current compatibility matrix. Check the official integration documentation for the setup details that apply to your project. The addon and CLI are alternative workflows, not substitutes for writing stories that cover the component states you want to check.
Make a useful visual test suite
- Choose representative states. Include states where visual regressions would matter: interaction states, validation errors, empty and loading states, and other variations your components support.
- Keep story inputs deliberate. Stories should render the intended state consistently enough for reviewers to understand a difference. Avoid treating a screenshot check as proof of behavior that the story does not exercise.
- Review changed baselines deliberately. Accept only visual changes the team intends to keep; reject unexplained differences and investigate them.
- Plan the execution location. Use the CLI when the workflow belongs in commands or a pipeline; consider the addon when developers want to run and triage from Storybook.
Applitools’ product page describes local processing, deterministic execution, and not sending snapshots to an external model or using them for training. Those are Applitools’ statements; the cited material does not independently verify them or establish every boundary of data handling. Teams with specific privacy or compliance requirements should consult Applitools’ current documentation and terms directly. See Applitools Eyes.
Troubleshoot common setup and review problems
The CLI cannot connect to Storybook
Check that Storybook is running and reachable at the URL supplied with -u, including the correct port. If the runner should launch Storybook itself, run npx eyes-storybook rather than pointing it at an unavailable local server.
The run does not include a state you expected
Check that the state exists as a Storybook story and that the run is discovering the intended Storybook. The integration captures available stories; it cannot infer unrepresented hover, error, empty, or loading states.

Eyes asks for credentials or cannot authenticate
Provide a valid Applitools API key when prompted, or set APPLITOOLS_API_KEY in the environment used by the command. Confirm that the environment running the CLI or pipeline can access the variable, and do not print or commit the key.
A checkpoint differs after a change
Open the result in the Dashboard and inspect the changed region. If the difference is intentional, accept and update the baseline; if not, reject it and investigate the source of the rendering change. Do not update a baseline solely to make a failed comparison disappear.
Need to configure match behavior or dynamic regions?
Applitools’ Playwright integration documentation discusses match levels and ignored dynamic regions as general Eyes concepts, but its examples are Playwright-specific, not Storybook API syntax. Do not copy those snippets into a Storybook configuration without a Storybook-specific instruction. Consult the Storybook integration documentation for supported configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Eyes Storybook integration test component behavior?
It captures visual checkpoints for stories; it does not replace functional tests for interactions or behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I use the CLI with an already-running Storybook?
Yes. Use the documented -u option, such as npx eyes-storybook -u http://localhost:6006, with the URL where your Storybook is reachable.
Does installing the addon create missing component states?
No. Add stories for the component states you want captured; the integration cannot capture a state that Storybook does not represent.
