Apple’s USB SuperDrive may work on a Windows 11 PC as an external CD/DVD drive, using Windows’ built-in optical-drive support. Connect it directly to the PC, insert a disc, then open File Explorer and select This PC; Apple does not document Windows 11 compatibility or require a special Apple setup command on its current support page.

Apple’s documented compatibility is for Mac computers introduced in 2008 or later without a built-in optical drive. Windows results can vary by PC, USB port, adapter, disc, and drive condition.

What you need

  • An Apple USB SuperDrive
  • A Windows 11 PC with a USB-A port, or a USB-C-to-USB adapter if the PC has USB-C ports only
  • A readable CD or DVD

Apple’s connection instructions specify a USB-A connection. If you are using USB-C, use a suitable USB-C-to-USB adapter. Connect the drive directly to the computer when it is not detected through a hub or external display.

How to connect an Apple SuperDrive to Windows 11

  1. Place the SuperDrive on a flat surface with the aluminum enclosure facing up.
  2. Connect the drive directly to a USB port on the Windows 11 computer. Avoid a USB hub or the USB port on an external monitor while testing.
  3. Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the device.
  4. Insert a CD or DVD with the label facing up.
  5. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu.
  6. Select This PC in the navigation pane.
  7. Look under Devices and drives for the CD/DVD drive. Open it to view the contents of the disc.

You do not normally need to install an Apple SuperDrive driver first. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions treat the device as an external CD/DVD drive and use Windows’ built-in optical-drive support.

  • 【UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY】 Compatible with Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7, Linux, and all macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon) for MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, Mac mini; NOT for iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/ChromeOS; for Mac, insert disc FIRST, connect directly to USB port (use a POWERED USB‑C hub for M1/M2/M3 to avoid insufficient power), and open media with VLC Player (Apple DVD Player not supported). Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.

If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

Turn on or change AutoPlay

AutoPlay controls what Windows does when you insert a disc. It is convenient, but it is not required. You can always open the drive manually through File Explorer > This PC.

To check AutoPlay:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select AutoPlay.
  4. Turn AutoPlay on.
  5. Choose the preferred action for removable drives, if Windows displays that option.

Windows maintains separate AutoPlay settings for removable drives and memory cards. The setting may therefore not behave as expected if you are checking the wrong device category.

Open a program or installer from a disc

If inserting the disc does not launch an installer, open it manually:

  1. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Double-click the optical-drive entry.
  4. Find the installer file, usually named Setup.exe or Install.exe.
  5. Double-click the file and follow the installation prompts.

Windows may ask for an administrator password or confirmation before allowing the installer to make changes. Only run an installer if you trust the disc and its source. An Apple SuperDrive reads the disc; it does not make software designed for macOS compatible with Windows. A disc must contain a Windows-compatible installer or files for Windows to use it.

How to eject a disc

Please verify your device type before purchasing
  1. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  2. Right-click the CD/DVD drive.
  3. Select Eject.

Wait until the disc stops spinning before removing it. If the drive does not appear in File Explorer, troubleshoot detection first rather than trying to eject it from a missing drive entry.

What to do if Windows 11 does not detect the SuperDrive

1. Check the physical connection

  • Disconnect and reconnect the SuperDrive.
  • Use a different USB port on the computer.
  • Connect it directly to the PC, not through a hub or external display.
  • If the computer has USB-C only, check the USB-C-to-USB adapter and try another compatible adapter if available.
  • Insert a known-good CD or DVD and wait several seconds.

If Windows detects the hardware but cannot read one particular disc, the problem may be the disc rather than the SuperDrive. Scratches, an unsupported disc format, or a damaged recording can prevent the contents from opening.

2. Check Device Manager

Microsoft’s built-in repair procedure is to remove the optical-drive device and let Windows reinstall it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Device Manager.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  5. Right-click the CD/DVD device.
  6. Select Uninstall device.
  7. Select Uninstall to confirm.
  8. Restart the computer.

Windows should automatically reinstall the device after the restart. A yellow exclamation mark beside the drive indicates a device or configuration problem. Microsoft lists optical-drive Codes 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41 as possible errors.

3. Consider when the problem started

If the SuperDrive worked before and stopped after a Windows upgrade, or after installing or removing CD/DVD recording software, the change may have affected Windows’ optical-drive configuration. Do not immediately download an unverified Apple SuperDrive driver; current Microsoft guidance starts with the built-in Device Manager procedure.

4. Show hidden devices

Microsoft also documents a generic optical-drive repair for stale IDE/ATAPI entries:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Select View > Show Hidden Devices.
  3. Expand IDE/ATAPI Controllers.
  4. If stale entries such as ATA Channel 0, ATA Channel 1, or Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller are present, uninstall the affected entries as directed by Microsoft.
  5. Restart Windows.

This procedure is aimed at generic optical-drive problems and may not apply to a USB-connected SuperDrive. Do not remove unrelated controller devices simply because they are listed under Device Manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Remove corrupted CD/DVD filter entries only as a last resort

Microsoft documents a registry repair for some optical-drive detection problems, but registry editing can cause serious problems if the wrong key or value is changed. Back up the registry first and use this step only if earlier remedies have failed.

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
  3. In the right pane, look for UpperFilters.
  4. Right-click it, choose Delete, and confirm.
  5. If LowerFilters is present, delete that value as well.
  6. Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.

Microsoft warns that removing these values can cause CD/DVD recording software to stop working. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, stop at the Device Manager remedies or ask an experienced technician.

Should you install Boot Camp Support Software?

Usually, no. Apple’s Boot Camp Support Software version 5.1.5769 is described as Windows support software for 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 on specified 2014 Macs. Apple does not identify it as a Windows 11 Apple SuperDrive driver package.

If you are using that package in an appropriate Boot Camp installation, Apple’s documented process is to extract the ZIP, open the Boot Camp5 folder, open the Boot Camp folder in Windows, double-click setup, approve the administrator prompt, choose Finish, and restart. This is an older Boot Camp support-package procedure, not a Windows 11-specific SuperDrive setup method.

What Windows 11 can and cannot do with the drive

Windows 11 can browse files on a compatible data CD or DVD and run a Windows installer stored on the disc. AutoPlay is optional, and no command-line setup is required for ordinary reading.

Whether a particular disc works depends on its format and contents. A macOS-only application will not become a Windows application simply because the disc is inserted into the SuperDrive. Similarly, a disc that is damaged or recorded in a format Windows cannot read may fail even when the drive itself is working.

FAQ

Does Apple officially support the SuperDrive on Windows 11?

Apple’s current SuperDrive support page documents Mac compatibility and does not state Windows 11 support. On Windows 11, treat the SuperDrive as an external CD/DVD drive. It may work through Windows’ built-in optical-drive support, but Apple does not provide a Windows 11 compatibility statement on that page.

Do I need an Apple SuperDrive driver for Windows 11?

Not normally. Microsoft’s current instructions use Windows’ built-in DVD/CD-ROM device support. If the drive is missing, use Device Manager to uninstall the optical-drive device and restart Windows so the driver is reinstalled automatically.

Can I use an Apple SuperDrive with a USB-C-only Windows laptop?

Yes, you need a USB-C-to-USB adapter because Apple’s current connection instructions specify a USB-A port. Connect the drive directly to the computer rather than through a hub while troubleshooting.

Why does the SuperDrive appear in Device Manager but not File Explorer?

It may have a driver or configuration problem, or Windows may be waiting for a readable disc. Check for a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives, insert a known-good disc, and use Microsoft’s uninstall-and-restart procedure.

Is AutoPlay required to use an Apple SuperDrive?

No. AutoPlay only controls automatic prompts or actions after a disc is inserted. You can access the disc manually through File Explorer > This PC even when AutoPlay is turned off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I eject a disc from an Apple SuperDrive on Windows 11?

Open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the optical-drive entry, and choose Eject. The SuperDrive has no physical eject button documented in Apple’s current connection instructions.

The Bottom Line

Connect the Apple SuperDrive directly to the Windows 11 PC, use a USB-C-to-USB adapter if necessary, insert a disc with the aluminum side facing up, and open File Explorer > This PC. Windows should handle it as an external CD/DVD drive without an Apple-specific Windows 11 driver. If it is missing, start with the USB connection and Device Manager reinstall procedure; reserve hidden-device and registry repairs for more persistent problems.
