ApiFlash can capture a webpage and return an image, but it does not automatically design a branded social card from a title and theme. To create a deliberate Open Graph preview, first render the card on a webpage, capture it with ApiFlash, publish the resulting image at a public URL, and set that URL as the page’s og:image.
Choose what ApiFlash should capture
ApiFlash’s /v1/urltoimage endpoint renders a supplied URL in Chrome and returns a screenshot. The key design decision is what page to give it:
- Capture an existing page: quickest when that page already looks like the preview you want. The output reflects its browser layout, so it may not resemble a compact social card.
- Build a dedicated card page: gives you control over composition, typography, colors, and layout. Create a route that renders just the preview at your chosen dimensions, then capture that route.
The dedicated-page approach is usually more consistent for branded previews. Make the route reachable by ApiFlash; if it requires authentication, use a supported authentication setup and keep credentials out of public client-side code.
Capture the page with ApiFlash
The endpoint is https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. Requests support GET query parameters or POST form data. Supply a valid access key and a complete target URL beginning with https:// or http://. Encode query values when needed.

Replace the key and target URL with your own. This example uses the documented endpoint and requests a PNG screenshot:

-o preview.pngKeep the access key on a server you control. Do not put a private key in JavaScript delivered to every site visitor. GET and POST options
GET requests put parameters in the URL; POST requests send them as form data. Either way, URL-encode values such as a target URL that contains its own query string. The default response is image data, so save the response body as an image file rather than trying to parse it as JSON.

To receive a JSON response containing a screenshot link instead, set response_type=json. JSON mode can also return extracted HTML or text when requested; consult the ApiFlash API documentation for the exact parameter names and current response structure.

Set capture dimensions, format, and readiness
ApiFlash documents a default viewport of 1920 by 1080, JPEG output, image response, and a cache TTL of 24 hours. These are capture defaults, not Open Graph protocol requirements. Set the viewport to match the page you designed; the screenshot depends on both viewport settings and the page’s responsive layout.
- Format: JPEG, PNG, and WebP are supported. Choose a format that your publishing workflow and intended consumers handle. JPEG and WebP support a quality setting.
- Viewport:
widthandheightset browser viewport dimensions. The API documents a combined pixel-area limit, so verify the current limits before requesting unusually large captures. - Full-page capture:
full_page=truecaptures the full page; when enabled, theheightparameter is ignored. For a social card, a fixed viewport or an element capture is generally a better match than a long page screenshot. - Element capture:
elementselects the first element matching a CSS selector. Use it to capture a card within a larger page, and ensure the selector is unique enough to target the intended element.
Pages that render content asynchronously need a readiness condition. ApiFlash recommends wait_for or wait_until where suitable instead of relying on a fixed delay. The documented delay range is 0–10 seconds. A wait_for selector that does not appear within 15 seconds aborts with an error. Prefer a selector that indicates the card is fully rendered, rather than an arbitrary long delay.

Other documented controls include CSS or JavaScript injection, cache TTL, and forcing a fresh capture. Their availability and precise parameter syntax should be checked in the live API reference, since API parameters and plan restrictions may change.
Store the screenshot at a public image URL
When ApiFlash returns image bytes, save them to storage your site can serve publicly, such as your application’s media storage or a suitable object store. Set the resulting stable, fetchable URL in the page metadata. If you use JSON mode, its screenshot link may fit your publishing workflow, but verify its access and persistence characteristics before relying on it as the long-term image URL.
The image must be retrievable by the systems that read your page’s metadata. A local file path, private storage URL, or URL that requires a logged-in browser will not serve as a dependable public preview image.

Add Open Graph metadata to the shared page
The Open Graph protocol identifies four required properties for every page: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. See the Open Graph protocol specification. Put them in the page’s HTML head and use the public URL of the captured image for og:image.

<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A description of the preview image">Use a type appropriate to the page; the example’s website value is not mandatory for every kind of content. Optional image properties include og:image:width, og:image:height, og:image:type, og:image:secure_url, and og:image:alt. The protocol does not define one universal image dimension for all social platforms. Choose dimensions for your design and the consumers you care about, and do not mistake the ApiFlash viewport setting for a protocol-mandated card size.
Verify the image and diagnose problems
- Inspect the saved capture. Open the file and check that the card is fully rendered, legible, and composed as intended.
- Fetch the published image URL. Confirm it is public and returns the image rather than an HTML error, redirect to a login page, or expired link.
- Inspect the shared page’s HTML. Confirm the four required Open Graph properties are present in the rendered page head, and that
og:imagepoints to the published image. - Refresh the capture if the page changed. ApiFlash caches screenshots; use its documented
freshoption to force a new capture when appropriate. - Allow for separate preview caching. ApiFlash’s screenshot cache is separate from the metadata or image cache maintained by a social platform. A fresh ApiFlash capture does not guarantee that a platform immediately refetches the changed image.
Common errors and fixes
- Invalid or missing key: check that the request includes a valid access key and that it is being sent to the documented endpoint.
- Target URL fails to load: include the full scheme, check that the URL is reachable from the capture service, and verify redirects or authentication requirements.
- Selector wait times out: make sure the selector exists in the rendered page and appears within the documented 15-second wait limit; target a stable element or adjust the page’s rendering behavior.
- Card is cut off or unexpectedly scaled: compare the card’s CSS dimensions with the requested viewport. For a page capture, layout may change at different viewport sizes; consider capturing a dedicated card route or the card element.
- Old screenshot appears: check ApiFlash’s cache settings and request a fresh capture when needed. If the image itself is current but the shared preview is not, the social platform may still be using its own cache.
- Preview image is missing for consumers: test the image URL without a logged-in session and ensure the page’s
og:imagevalue is an absolute public URL.
