On a Pixel phone, open the first app, swipe up and hold to open the app overview, tap the app’s icon, choose Split screen, then select the second app. The exact steps depend on your Android device, and some apps do not support split screen.
Use split screen on a Pixel phone
- Open the first app you want to use.
- Open the app overview. With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. With three-button navigation, tap the Overview button.
- In the overview, tap the first app’s icon and choose Split screen.
- Choose the second app from the app picker. Both apps will appear on screen.
Google’s Pixel phone instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. The documented workflow is for Pixel phones; other manufacturers may use different menus or gestures. See Google’s Pixel phone split-screen instructions and its Android navigation guidance.
Adjust the apps or exit split screen
On a Pixel phone, drag the divider between the apps to change how much screen space each gets. To return to one app, drag the divider all the way to the top or bottom of the screen. On a foldable device, the divider may move horizontally instead; follow the direction shown for that device.
How split screen differs on other Pixel devices
Pixel Fold
On Pixel Fold, you can start split screen by dragging an app from the taskbar, choosing an app through Overview, or selecting one from the app list. To close one pane, drag the divider to either side. See Google’s Pixel Fold instructions.

Pixel Tablet
Pixel Tablet supports split screen from Overview or the taskbar. You can adjust the pane sizes and positions, and save app pairs for later. Some of Google’s tablet instructions require Android 15 or later. See Google’s Pixel Tablet split-screen instructions.
If Split screen does not appear
- Check whether the app supports it. Google says, “Depending on the app, you can sometimes use more than one app at once.” If the app’s menu has no Split screen command, that app may not support the feature.
- Check the device’s instructions. Android menu paths vary by manufacturer, so a Pixel workflow may not match your phone. Consult the manufacturer’s guidance for your model and software version.
- Check the device and software version. Support can depend on the device, form factor, and Android version; not every Android device offers the same split-screen options.
Split screen versus desktop windowing
Split screen places two apps in a paired layout. On supported large-screen Android devices, desktop windowing instead allows multiple app windows to move and resize freely, and may support use with a connected display. Availability and behavior vary by device. See Google’s Android desktop-windowing guidance.
