To capture a website in a mobile layout with an MCP server, connect Playwright MCP to your MCP client, start it with a mobile device profile or explicit viewport dimensions, navigate to the page, and call browser_take_screenshot. This emulates a browser context; it does not prove the page was tested on a physical phone. The steps below follow the official Playwright documentation accessed October 3, 2026.
Set up Playwright MCP with a mobile viewport
1. Register the server in your MCP client
Use the client’s documented MCP server configuration location. Playwright’s getting-started guide shows this standard configuration shape, which launches the package through npx and selects an iPhone 15 profile:

2. Choose a device profile or viewport dimensions
Playwright MCP documents three ways to configure a mobile-sized context:

--device="iPhone 15"selects a named device-emulation profile.--mobileselects the generic mobile profile. The documented default is Pixel 10 on Chromium and iPhone 17 on WebKit.--viewport-size="390x844"sets explicit viewport width and height in CSS pixels. These dimensions are an example, not a universal mobile standard.
Named or generic profiles are convenient when you want a preset; explicit dimensions are useful when reproducing a specific layout breakpoint. Device profiles and generic mobile behavior are emulation settings, not a physical-device test. Check the Playwright emulation documentation for current options.
3. Select the browser engine deliberately
The documented options include Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. Select the engine that matters to your review, because browser behavior can differ; in particular, the generic mobile profile differs between Chromium and WebKit. Navigate and capture the page
- Start or reconnect the configured Playwright MCP server in your client.
- Ask the assistant to navigate to the target page using the browser navigation tool. Wait for the page state you need to inspect; dynamic content may require an additional wait.
- Ask it to take a screenshot, or invoke
browser_take_screenshot. - Choose the capture scope, format, output path, and scale as described below.
The mobile profile or viewport must be set on the server/browser context before navigation and capture. Changing dimensions after a page is open may affect the rendered layout, but for a repeatable comparison, configure the context first and navigate again.
Choose what the screenshot includes

For a tall mobile page, full-page capture is useful for documenting the whole layout, but it is not a single physical handset screen. For a bug report about what a user sees without scrolling, capture the current viewport instead. See Playwright’s screenshots documentation.

Format, file, and scale
Supported formats are PNG, JPEG, and WebP. Supply a filename to save the image; otherwise, the tool returns it inline. CSS scale is the default and produces CSS-pixel sizing. Device scale uses the emulated device pixel ratio for a higher-resolution image. Choose CSS scale for consistent viewport-sized artifacts; choose device scale when you need more pixels for close visual inspection.
Use screenshots and accessibility snapshots for different jobs
A screenshot shows appearance: spacing, visual hierarchy, responsive layout, canvas or chart content, and evidence for a visual bug. It does not give reliable structured element references for interactions. For text, page structure, and actionable controls, use Playwright MCP’s accessibility snapshot. References such as e5 belong to the current snapshot and can become invalid after navigation or another page change, so take a fresh snapshot before acting on a reference.

For a visual issue tied to a particular control, use both: inspect the screenshot for appearance, then take a current accessibility snapshot to locate the semantic control. Playwright’s documentation summarizes this distinction on its screenshots and MCP getting-started pages.
Common problems and fixes
- The page still looks like desktop: Confirm the server started with the intended
--device,--mobile, or--viewport-sizeoption. Make sure you navigated after configuration and are capturing the intended browser context. - The generic mobile layout does not match your expected device: The generic profile differs by engine—Pixel 10 on Chromium and iPhone 17 on WebKit in the documented options. Select a named profile or explicit dimensions and the engine you intend to evaluate.
- An element reference no longer works: Take a new accessibility snapshot after navigation or other page changes, then use the newly returned reference.
- Full-page and element capture conflict: They cannot be combined. Capture the element separately, or turn on full-page mode without a target.
- The image is unexpectedly low-resolution or large: Check whether the capture uses CSS scale or device scale. Device scale uses the device pixel ratio and can produce a larger image.
- The screenshot misses content loaded later: Wait for the relevant content or element before taking the screenshot. A capture taken before client-side rendering finishes only records the state visible at that moment.
- You need proof of behavior on a real handset: An emulated profile is not a physical-device run. Record the configured engine, profile or dimensions, and capture scope; arrange a separate real-device test when physical hardware behavior is material.

Can I capture a specific mobile screen and the full page in one screenshot?
