An NFC-powered e-ink phone case uses a small amount of energy from your phone when you send a new image. Once the image is set, the display holds it without continuous power. That means it does not need ongoing energy just to keep a static image visible—but it does not prove that image transfers have zero effect on your phone’s battery.
How an NFC e-ink case uses power
When you send an image, the phone and case communicate over NFC. In the design described by E Ink Holdings, the phone’s NFC signal supplies the energy needed to update the screen. E Ink announced a batteryless 2.9-inch ePaper module for smartphone cases in 2016 and said the display’s bistability keeps the image visible until it is changed again.
Reinkstone describes a similar process: the phone and case antennas couple, the case receives image data and energy, the screen refreshes, and the case’s power circuit disconnects. In practical terms, there are two different power questions:
- During an image update: the NFC transfer draws energy from the phone.
- After the update: the bistable display retains the image without continuous power to hold it. The image can remain visible even when the case is removed from the phone, according to the cited makers.
E Ink Holdings CTO Dr. CC Tsai described the company’s display technology this way: “E Ink’s ePaper is bi-stable consuming power only when the image is updated.” This is a statement about the display’s operation, not a measured battery-life result for every phone-and-case combination.

How to update the image while limiting unnecessary transfers
Use the app and instructions supplied for your particular case. The documented Inkie Case workflow uses its companion app to select an image and send it to the case over NFC. Other makers may use a different app or require different phone-to-case positioning, so there is no universal tap sequence or alignment procedure to rely on.
- Check the case’s instructions and app. Confirm that the app is available for your phone and follow the case maker’s steps for preparing an image.
- Position the phone and case as instructed. NFC antenna placement and transfer behavior can vary by model; use the maker’s specified alignment rather than assuming the antennas are in the same place on every phone.
- Send the image and wait for the refresh to finish. The phone supplies energy during this transfer. Do not interrupt the process if the maker’s instructions say to keep the devices in position until it completes.
- Choose the image before sending it. Update only when you want a different design. Each change triggers a refresh, although available sources do not quantify how much battery this practice saves.
Will an e-ink phone case drain the battery?
The available evidence supports a limited answer: image transfers use energy from the phone, while a static image does not need continuous display power. It does not establish that repeated transfers have literally no battery impact. The reviewed sources provide neither an energy-per-refresh figure nor an independent comparison of phone battery life with and without an e-ink case. No specific percentage, runtime, or number of updates per charge can therefore be stated reliably.

Some manufacturers describe the day-to-day impact as unnoticeable, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured result. If you are concerned about battery use, avoid sending images more often than needed and judge your own phone’s battery behavior; do not treat the display’s lack of standby power as a guarantee about the phone’s total battery life.
Check compatibility before buying or troubleshooting
E-ink cases are model-specific. A case listed for one phone generation or variant should not be assumed to fit or transfer images with another. The cited listings illustrate why you need to check the exact device rather than relying on a general brand name:

What battery claims can—and cannot—tell you
The display technology explains why a static image can remain visible without continuous power, but it does not answer how much energy a particular phone spends on each NFC transfer. The sources cited here do not provide an independently measured per-update drain or a universal test across phones and case models. For that reason, a claim such as “zero battery drain” or a precise battery-life estimate would go beyond the evidence.
