You can usually use an app without speaking: tap its visible controls and type into fields with the on-screen keyboard. Voice features such as Android Voice Access and iPhone Voice Control are optional ways to control a device, not requirements for using apps in general. Whether every task has a non-voice route depends on the app and what you are trying to do.
Use touch and the on-screen keyboard
- Open the app and use its visible controls. Tap buttons, menus, tabs, and other on-screen elements to navigate.
- Tap a text field to type. When the on-screen keyboard appears, enter your text and use the app’s own buttons to submit or continue.
- Check the app’s alternatives for the task. Some features may offer a button or menu option instead of voice input; others may not provide a usable non-voice route for a particular task. Support varies by app.
You do not need a physical keyboard simply to avoid speaking. External keyboards and adaptive input devices may help with particular needs, but compatibility depends on the device and app.
Turn off Android Voice Access
Voice Access is Google’s Android feature for controlling a device with spoken commands. If it is active and you want to stop using it, Google’s documented path is Settings > Accessibility > Voice Access, then turn Voice Access off. Menu names and locations can differ by Android version or device manufacturer. Google’s Voice Access instructions also describe ways to stop listening without turning the feature off entirely.
For device-specific behavior, consult Google’s Voice Access settings guide. It documents options including listening behavior, showing the keyboard when Voice Access is stopped, and assigning a physical key—such as a keyboard key or Bluetooth switch—to start or stop Voice Access. Those instructions do not establish that every Android device, keyboard, or app supports the same options.

Use an iPhone without Voice Control
Apple’s Voice Control feature accepts spoken commands to interact with an iPhone. You can leave it unused and operate apps through their touch interfaces instead. Apple notes that Voice Control commands vary with the app and the task, so its feature list does not establish whether a specific third-party app can complete every task without speaking. See Apple’s Voice Control guide for details about that feature.
Apple’s separate VoiceOver guide for using apps illustrates touch-based navigation and text entry, including selecting Safari’s address field, showing the keyboard, and typing a search. VoiceOver is a screen reader that speaks interface information; Voice Control listens for spoken commands. If your goal is only to avoid spoken commands, do not turn off VoiceOver if you rely on its spoken feedback.

Know which kind of voice feature you mean
- Voice control: Voice Access on Android and Voice Control on iPhone listen for spoken input to control the device.
- Screen reader: VoiceOver speaks interface information to support navigation. It is not the same as a voice-command feature.
- Speech-to-text: Dictation turns spoken words into text. You can type instead when the app and task allow it.
- Text-to-speech communication: Apple’s Live Speech lets a user type words for the device to speak aloud. Apple describes it as a feature that “Takes your typed words and speaks them out loud.” This is not silent text-only output; availability can vary by region and language. Details are on Apple’s accessibility features page.
When touch or typing does not complete the task
If a particular feature appears to require voice input, look in the app for another control or consult its help information. The platform guidance above cannot establish the behavior of an unnamed app. If you need an alternative input method, check whether your device and the app support it before relying on an external keyboard, Bluetooth switch, or adaptive hardware. These are options for particular setups, not universal requirements.
