To turn HTML into a faithful website screenshot, render it in a browser and capture the rendered page. Use AI to draft or refine the HTML, write the browser automation, or review the result—not as a substitute for browser rendering. A text-to-image generator may imitate a webpage, but the reviewed documentation does not establish that it executes arbitrary HTML accurately.
What you need to generate a screenshot from HTML
The basic pipeline is HTML and its assets, a browser renderer, and a capture step. AI can assist with the code and iteration; the browser determines what the page actually looks like at a chosen viewport.
- HTML, CSS, and assets: Keep local files available to the renderer, or ensure remote images, fonts, stylesheets, and scripts can load. Missing or delayed resources change the result.
- A browser capture method: Use Playwright when you want to control the browser and own the automation, or a hosted rendering endpoint when you prefer to submit HTML or a URL to a service.
- Capture settings: Record viewport width and height, output format, and whether you need the visible viewport or the entire page. Responsive layouts can differ substantially at different widths.
Option 1: Render HTML and capture it with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API provides page.screenshot() and documents full-page screenshots and capture options. This route suits developers who need browser-level control and can manage the runtime and code.
Capture a local HTML file

npm init -ynpm install playwrightnpx playwright install chromium
Save this as capture.mjs beside page.html:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { pathToFileURL } from 'node:url';
import { resolve } from 'node:path';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto(pathToFileURL(resolve('page.html')).href, {
waitUntil: 'load'
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node capture.mjs. The script opens a 1440-by-900 CSS-pixel viewport and writes a full-page PNG. Remove fullPage: true to capture just the viewport. Set deviceScaleFactor above 1 when you need more output pixels per CSS pixel; that increases image dimensions and file size.
Relative asset paths in page.html resolve from its file location. If your page relies on scripts or fonts that require an HTTP origin, serve the files locally and navigate to the local server URL instead of using a file:// URL.

Capture a live URL
For a public page, replace the file navigation with a URL and wait for the relevant rendering work:
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
Choose the wait condition for the page rather than assuming one event means every visual element is ready. Pages that continuously poll or load analytics can fail to reach network idle; pages that insert content after initial load may need a selector wait or a deliberate delay. Playwright documents navigation and screenshot controls in its Page API; check current options for your installed version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse AI to improve the result
- Ask a coding assistant to create or modify the HTML and CSS. Include the intended viewport, layout, text, and asset locations.
- Render the page with the same viewport and capture settings each time.
- Inspect the image. If a font, image, spacing, or responsive breakpoint is wrong, give the assistant the specific issue and revise the source.
- Rerender and compare. Treat the browser output—not a generated mockup—as the check on whether the HTML renders as intended.
Option 2: Use a hosted HTML screenshot endpoint
Cloudflare Browser Run’s screenshot endpoint documents accepting either a URL or raw HTML, processing HTML and JavaScript, and capturing the rendered page. It can be accessed through REST API or a Workers Binding; its documentation also covers viewport, wait configuration, and authentication for protected pages.
Choose this category when you want hosted rendering instead of managing a browser runtime yourself. You still need to configure the account or API access and provide the page content or address. This guide does not establish a cost or speed winner between hosted rendering and Playwright.

Decide which input and controls you need
- Local HTML or raw HTML: A local Playwright browser can open a local file. Cloudflare documents raw HTML as an endpoint input. For either route, make sure dependent assets are accessible to the renderer.
- A URL: Both a browser automation workflow and Cloudflare’s endpoint can render a page address. For dynamic content, select an appropriate wait condition and verify the final image.
- Viewport versus full page: Capture the first visible screen for an above-the-fold preview; use a full-page capture when the complete scrollable document matters. The endpoint’s exact available settings and Playwright’s options are documented by their respective providers.
- Protected pages: Cloudflare documents cookies, HTTP basic authentication, and extra HTTP headers. Use only authorized credentials, and do not paste secrets into public prompts or commit them to sample code.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For HTML or a URL, it renders a browser screenshot through one GET request. Its options include HTML/CSS-to-image, full-page capture, output formats, viewport presets, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, and authentication headers. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default, and those steps can be turned off. CAPTCHA or bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example cURL request (replace the URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, parameters, response details, and additional examples. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

- The screenshot is blank or missing styles: Check that relative paths resolve from the file’s location and that the renderer can access remote assets. Try serving local files over HTTP if scripts or fonts do not work under
file://. - Images or text are missing: The page may still be loading when the capture runs. Wait for a relevant selector or resource, or use a measured delay; inspect browser errors and network access for blocked resources.
- A dynamic page never reaches the wait condition: Pages that keep network requests open may not become idle. Use a more suitable navigation condition, wait for the content selector you need, or set a bounded delay.
- The layout differs from the intended design: Confirm the viewport and device scale factor. CSS media queries respond to viewport dimensions, and screenshots at different sizes do not represent the same layout.
- A full-page capture is unexpectedly tall or incomplete: Check whether the page expands content only as it scrolls. For lazy-loaded images, scroll or otherwise trigger the content before capture, then verify the resulting image.
- A protected page redirects or denies access: Supply authorized cookies, basic authentication, or headers using the supported method. Do not expose credentials in logs, shared prompts, or public source code.
- The browser fails to launch in deployment: Confirm the Playwright browser is installed in the runtime environment and that the deployment permits launching it. Local success alone does not guarantee that a separate server environment has the same browser dependencies.
