Use AI search to map a question, then use its citations and ordinary Google Search to verify the claims. Treat the AI response as a guide to evidence—not as evidence by itself.
Why use AI search and Google together?
AI search is useful when a question is broad or you are not sure which angles matter. A conversational answer can suggest subquestions and link to web pages; follow-up prompts let you explore those leads. Google describes these capabilities for AI Mode and also lets you return to Search results. Google Search Help: AI Mode and Google Search Help: AI features in Search
But an AI summary can misinterpret web content or miss context. Google advises checking important information in more than one place. That is why the useful division of labor is exploration first, verification second: let AI help organize the search, then inspect sources and find corroborating material yourself.
A practical research loop
-
Ask for an overview and the questions behind it
State the question clearly and ask the AI search tool for a concise overview, the main subquestions, and links to the sources it used. For example: “What should I know about [topic]? List the key questions I should answer, and link sources for each.” Treat the response as a starting map, not a settled conclusion.

Turn the answer into claims you can check
Pull out the statements that matter to your answer: dates, definitions, comparisons, numbers, and cause-and-effect claims. Phrase each as a question you can investigate. For instance, change “The policy began recently” into “When did the policy take effect, and where?” This makes it easier to spot an answer that is vague, incomplete, or unsupported.
-
Open the cited pages
Follow the links rather than relying on snippets or the AI’s description of a source. Find the passage that supports the attached claim. Prefer an original or official source where available, and note its publication or update date and the scope it covers. A citation is useful only if the page actually supports the claim—not merely because it discusses the same topic.
-
Search Google results independently
Use ordinary Google Search to look for relevant sources beyond those surfaced by the AI answer. Search the key claim, a distinctive phrase, or the named organization alongside terms such as “official,” “report,” or a date when appropriate. Open promising results and assess them directly. Google specifically recommends checking AI sources and trying other Search results for important information.
-
Compare evidence before deciding
If sources disagree, check whether they refer to different dates, places, populations, definitions, or editions. Give more weight to a source that directly addresses the claim and has relevant authority; do not treat two pages repeating the same unsupported statement as independent confirmation. If the evidence does not resolve the conflict, say what remains uncertain instead of repeating the AI answer as fact.

Keep a short evidence trail
For each important claim, record the source, date, and what it establishes. This helps you distinguish a source that confirms the exact point from one that offers background or a different scope. OpenAI’s research guidance likewise recommends checking whether citations support claims and whether the report answers the question. OpenAI Help Center: Deep research
How to fact-check an AI search answer
- Trace the claim to the page. Check the cited source itself and locate supporting text; do not assume the citation backs every sentence in the answer.
- Check scope and timing. Confirm that the source covers the same location, time period, definition, and group as the claim.
- Look for another route to evidence. Search Google independently and inspect additional relevant sources, especially for consequential claims.
- Separate fact from interpretation. A source may establish a date or describe a policy without proving the AI’s broader explanation of its effects.
- Preserve uncertainty. If reliable sources do not settle the question, report the disagreement or missing evidence rather than filling the gap with a confident-sounding summary.
Which should you use for each task?
| Task | Useful starting point | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Understanding a broad topic or identifying subquestions | AI search, for conversational exploration and follow-up | Turn the overview into specific claims and questions to verify. |
| Checking whether a cited page supports a claim | The opened source page | Read the relevant passage and check its date and scope. |
| Finding material the AI answer did not surface | Ordinary Google Search results | Open relevant results and assess the evidence independently. |
| Settling an important claim | Multiple relevant sources, including primary or official sources when available | Compare what each source establishes; do not rely on the AI summary alone. |
These are complementary tasks, not a ranking of which mode is always more accurate or comprehensive. The sources do not establish that one is universally better.
