Cypress interprets them against the application’s DOM, generates Cypress commands, and runs them; you can inspect those commands in the Command Log. You can either export and commit the generated code as a conventional test or keep cy.prompt() in the test so Cypress can regenerate steps when selectors stop working.
What cy.prompt() does
cy.prompt() turns natural-language instructions into executable Cypress commands. Instead of hand-writing every interaction and selector, you describe the intended sequence—for example, visiting a login page, entering credentials, submitting the form, and checking that the dashboard appears. Cypress interprets the instructions in the context of the page’s DOM.
The generated commands are visible in the Cypress Command Log. That visibility makes the output reviewable; it does not prove that a test checks the right behavior. Confirm that its actions and assertions match the application’s actual requirements before relying on it.
Set up Cypress Cloud access
Cypress documents cy.prompt() as a Cloud-backed feature: prompts need a secure Cypress Cloud connection to be interpreted. Cypress says to access it by logging in to Cloud or by recording a run with --record and a valid key. Check Cypress’s current setup documentation and plan details for the project’s exact configuration and limits, since those can change.

Cypress’s guide says its free Starter plan includes cy.prompt(), while paid plans raise execution allowances and hourly limits. Cypress also states that prompts are not used to train AI models and that AI features can be turned off. Those are Cypress’s statements; review its current data terms and plan information before adopting the feature in a project with sensitive data.
Write a useful prompt
Make each step imperative, specific, and observable. Cypress’s guidance favors one action per step, explicit target or positional context where controls could be ambiguous, and a full URL when visiting a page. English is the optimized prompt language; Cypress does not guarantee accuracy or support for prompts in other languages.
- Start each step with an action such as “visit,” “type,” “click,” or “verify.”
- Name the control and its context. “Click the Edit Profile button in the profile section” is clearer than “click button.”
- Describe the expected result precisely. “Verify the exact ‘Profile updated’ message is visible” is more actionable than “check success.”
- Use an absolute URL in a visit step, rather than relying on an unstated base URL.
- Keep steps in the same order a user would follow the flow.
Cypress’s documentation summarizes the principle as: “Prompt clarity determines reliability.”

Example: generate a login flow
This illustrative example uses Cypress’s documented syntax. Its selectors, page URL, and expected dashboard behavior must be adapted to the application under test; the example is not a tested spec for a particular site.

placeholders: {
email: testEmail,
password: testPassword,
},
})
Use the placeholders option for values that change between runs or should not appear in prompt text. Cypress says placeholder values are not sent to the AI and do not affect the cache identity, so changing a value does not invalidate cached generated code. Store actual secrets using your project’s appropriate secret-management mechanism; placeholders do not replace that practice.
Cypress currently documents force and timeout as supported natural-language command options. Check the current API reference before depending on any other option or phrasing.

Choose whether to keep or export the generated steps
| Workflow | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Generate once, inspect, export, and commit ordinary Cypress code | You want the test to run as source-controlled Cypress code without an AI request on every run. | Review and update selectors as the application changes. |
Keep cy.prompt() in the test |
You want Cypress to regenerate code when a cached selector fails after a UI change. | The workflow continues to depend on a Cloud-backed AI feature. Inspect regenerated commands and verify that they still test the intended behavior. |
In either workflow, treat generated commands as a starting point for a test you own. Cypress documents inspection and export, but does not promise that generated tests are infallible or that they preserve a test’s meaning after every application change.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a Cypress prompt generator or a replacement for a Cypress test. If you need a screenshot artifact from a URL without setting up browser automation, its API accepts a single GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

Troubleshooting and review checks
The prompt cannot be interpreted
Confirm that the run has a secure Cypress Cloud connection, through a Cloud login or a recorded run with a valid key. If it does, simplify the wording: use English, imperative steps, one action per line, and explicit target context.
The wrong control is selected
Disambiguate the target by its accessible name, role, nearby section, or position. For example, identify the “Edit Profile” button in the profile section rather than asking Cypress to click an unspecified button. Review the generated commands in the Command Log.
The test reaches the wrong page
Give the visit step the complete absolute URL and verify that it is the intended environment. Do not assume a relative path will be resolved as expected.
A changing value breaks the prompt or exposes data
Move variable values out of the natural-language steps and into named {{placeholder}} references supplied through placeholders. Keep secrets in project-managed secret storage.
A test passes but does not prove the requirement
Check the generated assertions against the behavior the test is meant to protect. A vague instruction such as “check success” may not establish that the correct state or message appeared. Make the expected result explicit, then validate the test against the application.
A generated selector fails after a UI change
If you exported ordinary Cypress code, update and recommit the selector or interaction. If you kept cy.prompt(), Cypress describes a workflow that can regenerate code when a cached selector fails; inspect the regenerated commands and confirm the test still has the right meaning.
Where other Cypress AI features fit
cy.prompt() is for turning written steps into test commands. Cypress also documents Studio and Studio AI for recording interactions and suggesting assertions, and AI Skills, cypress tap, Cloud MCP, and Cloud CLI for coding-agent workflows, live test debugging, and Cloud run analysis. These are related tools, not alternate names for cy.prompt(); choose among them based on whether you need prompt-driven test generation, recorded authoring, or agent-assisted debugging and analysis.
