Duplicate the photo in Apple Photos before you experiment. Edit the duplicate, so the original remains a separate item in your library. If you already saved an edit to the original, Photos also lets you revert that item to its original state.
Duplicate the photo before editing

Open the photo in the Photos app and tap More.

Tap Duplicate. Check that the new copy appears beside the original in your library.

Open the duplicate, tap Edit, and use the adjustments, filters, or AI editing tools available on your iPhone.

When you are satisfied, tap Done to save the changes to the duplicate.

Apple’s instructions say that duplicating a photo preserves the original version: Duplicate and copy photos and videos on iPhone.
Choose the right way to undo an edit
The safeguard depends on whether the edit has been saved and whether you want a separate copy or to restore the edited item.

To abandon changes before saving, tap Cancel, then Discard Changes. To undo a saved edit, open the edited photo, tap More, then tap Revert to Original. Apple documents the recovery steps in Undo and revert photo edits on iPhone.

Use Apple’s AI editing tools with care
Clean Up
Clean Up is designed to remove distracting objects. Open a photo, tap Edit, then Clean Up; tap, brush over, or circle the object you want to remove. Inspect the result before saving. Apple warns that brushing over a person’s face may produce a blurred or pixelated effect. Clean Up availability varies by device, language, and region. See Apple’s Clean Up instructions.
Check eligibility for other Photos features
Apple’s iOS 27 guide also documents Clean Up, Extend, and Reframe. It lists Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later as supported, while noting that language, region, and usage limits apply. Feature eligibility and Photos controls can change, so check Apple’s current Photos feature requirements for your device and location.

What iCloud Photos does—and does not do
With iCloud Photos enabled, edits are saved across your devices. That means an edit can appear on other synced devices; syncing is not an independent untouched copy. If you want a separate original alongside the edited image in Photos, duplicate the photo before editing.
