The lowest-impact way to use an AI chatbot is to use it only for a useful task, choose the lightest mode that can do that task, write a concise and specific request, keep the response as short as you need, and revise an existing answer instead of repeatedly generating new ones. Text chat is usually far less energy-intensive than image, video, extended-reasoning or agentic work, but there is no honest universal “grams of CO2 per prompt” figure. The result depends on the model, hardware, prompt and output length, task complexity, data-centre location, cooling system and electricity mix.
Why chatbot energy use is difficult to measure
Every chatbot request has a physical workload behind it. Servers in a data centre receive your input, run a model on specialised processors, generate an answer and move data through storage and networks. Training a model is a large, occasional workload; inference is the repeated work performed each time users ask for an answer. Both consume electricity, although a single user normally controls only the inference request.
A per-request estimate cannot be transferred reliably from one service to another. Energy changes with the number of model parameters, the hardware generation, batching with other users, the amount of text processed, the length of the response, whether the system performs extra reasoning steps, and whether it creates an image or video. Location matters because the same kilowatt-hour can cause very different emissions on a coal-heavy grid and a grid with a large share of low-carbon generation. Cooling, storage and networking add overhead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe International Energy Agency (IEA) says energy use per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years, but that improvement does not make every request equivalent. The IEA also reports that video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. Efficiency gains and rapidly growing use therefore occur at the same time.

An AI provider may publish an average for a particular model, data-centre region, accounting boundary and measurement date. That can be useful for comparing that provider’s own services, but it is not a universal conversion for every chatbot. Treat any figure without those qualifications as incomplete.
The scale of the issue
Data centres include cloud computing, storage, websites, enterprise software and many workloads that are not AI. AI is only a subset, so data-centre totals should not be presented as if they were all caused by chatbots. They nevertheless show why efficiency and demand matter.
| Measure | What the figure covers | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 180 Mt of indirect CO2 emissions in 2024 | Electricity-related emissions from data centres | IEA, 2025; this is the whole data-centre sector, not AI alone |
| About 0.5% of global fuel-combustion emissions in 2024 | Data-centre electricity emissions | IEA, 2025; the percentage is not an AI-only share |
| Approximately 485 TWh in 2025, rising to about 950 TWh in 2030 | Global data-centre electricity demand | IEA projection published in 2026; the 2030 level is roughly 3% of global electricity demand |
| Hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query | Video generation, extended reasoning and agentic tasks compared with simple text generation | IEA, 2026; a relative range, not a fixed multiplier for every product |
The IEA notes that a simple text query now typically uses less electricity than running a television for the same period. That comparison should not be read as a reason to ask unlimited questions: millions of users, long outputs and much heavier modes still create substantial aggregate demand.

Start with the highest-impact decision: do you need a chatbot?
The cleanest request is the one that avoids unnecessary computation. Before opening a chatbot, decide whether a search result, a calculator, a document’s built-in find function, a saved answer or a human conversation already solves the problem. This is not an argument against useful AI; it is a way to reserve it for work where its flexibility saves time or improves an outcome.
- Use a chatbot when you need synthesis, transformation, drafting, explanation or interactive problem-solving.
- Use a conventional tool for a fixed calculation, a known definition, a file lookup or a task that a deterministic command completes immediately.
- Combine related questions into one well-scoped request rather than opening several chats that repeat the same context.
“Useful” should include accessibility and time saved. A person who needs a chatbot to translate, summarise or explain information should not feel obliged to avoid it; the practical goal is to reduce waste around necessary use.

Write a concise prompt that gets the right answer first time
A well-scoped request can reduce retries and unnecessary output. State the goal, the relevant context, constraints and the format you want. Ask for only the depth required. The Associated Press reported an environmental-policy researcher, Madani, advising users to be precise and short; the same report described an association in which 30% less wording in requests corresponded to 25% lower AI energy use. That is an observed relationship in the report, not a guaranteed saving for every model or prompt.
A practical prompt pattern
- Goal: say exactly what you want done.
- Context: provide only information that changes the answer.
- Constraints: include audience, date, jurisdiction, tone, limits or required sources.
- Format: specify a short paragraph, table, checklist, code block or numbered steps.
- Length: set a word, bullet or sentence limit when a long answer is unnecessary.
For example, instead of asking “Can you please help me understand renewable energy in a lot of detail?”, ask: “Explain how grid carbon intensity affects cloud computing for a general reader in 150 words, then give three practical actions in a checklist.” The second request supplies a target, scope and stopping point.
Courtesy is fine, but extra pleasantries do not improve the task. Madani’s warning that an extra “please” can make a difference refers to added wording and should be understood as a prompt-efficiency observation, not a demand to be abrupt. Put the useful information first.
Prevent avoidable follow-up turns
- Include the country or region when laws, prices, spelling or energy data differ by geography.
- Give the version or date when asking about software, standards or current events.
- Tell the chatbot what you have already tried so it does not repeat generic steps.
- Ask it to flag uncertainty instead of filling missing facts with assumptions.
- Request a compact first pass and ask for expansion only if a specific part needs it.
Reuse and edit instead of regenerating
If an answer is mostly correct, keep it in the same conversation and request a targeted change: “Correct the second table row,” “Cut this to five bullets,” or “Rewrite only the introduction for a non-technical reader.” A focused revision usually avoids sending all the work back through a fresh, broad request and reduces the chance of receiving another long answer.
Save useful explanations, prompts and templates for recurring work. When you need a similar result, provide the previous answer or the relevant excerpt and ask for the precise transformation. Remove irrelevant history if the service would otherwise process a very long conversation. Do not paste confidential material merely to avoid retyping it; privacy and security take priority over a small efficiency gain.

Choose the lightest mode that can complete the task
Chatbot interfaces increasingly offer ordinary text, image creation, video creation, extended reasoning and agentic modes. These are not interchangeable from an energy perspective. Use the simplest mode that meets the quality requirement.
| Task or mode | Lower-impact practice | When a heavier mode is justified |
|---|---|---|
| Text generation | Use a standard text model for drafting, summarising, translation and straightforward explanations; set a sensible length limit. | When the task needs specialised reasoning, calculation or verification that the ordinary mode cannot provide. |
| Image generation | Use text instructions, an existing image or a simple edit when a picture is not essential. Request the required dimensions and number of variations up front. | When an original visual is genuinely part of the outcome; avoid many near-identical iterations. |
| Video generation | Use a storyboard, still image or written description if that communicates the idea. | When motion is necessary; video generation is among the workloads the IEA identifies as far heavier than simple text. |
| Extended reasoning | Use normal generation for routine writing, classification and known procedures. | Use deeper reasoning for a problem whose accuracy or multi-step analysis materially benefits from it, then ask for a concise final answer. |
| Agentic workflows | Do the one required operation directly instead of launching an autonomous workflow with repeated tool calls. | When a task genuinely requires planning, external actions or monitoring across several steps and you can review the permissions. |
The IEA’s “hundreds or thousands of times” comparison applies to categories of tasks, not to a guaranteed ratio between every button in every app. Providers may implement modes differently, so capability and disclosure should be checked together.
Reduce waste in image and video work
- Write the subject, composition, aspect ratio, style and exclusions in one prompt.
- Choose the smallest resolution and shortest duration that satisfy the use case.
- Ask for a small number of variants instead of an open-ended batch.
- Keep a successful image and request a local edit rather than starting from scratch.
- Delete failed drafts and avoid automatic high-resolution or frame-rate upgrades unless needed.
Keep outputs no longer than the job requires
Generation continues while the model produces tokens or media. “Answer in six bullets,” “give a 100-word summary,” “return a two-column table” and “show only the corrected code” are useful controls. A short answer is not automatically better: if a safety explanation, accessibility description or technical caveat is necessary, include it. The point is to avoid surplus text that nobody will read.
Ask for staged detail when the subject is uncertain: first request an outline or decision tree, then expand one branch. This lets you stop after the part that solves the problem instead of generating a full treatment every time.

How to compare chatbot providers and models
There is no universally “greenest” chatbot that can be named from a single energy number. A sensible comparison uses both capability and evidence. The most efficient service is the one that completes your task with the least demanding mode while meeting privacy and quality requirements.
| Comparison question | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Can a lighter model do the job? | Clear model tiers, task descriptions and a way to select a standard or small model. | Using a larger model than necessary can add computation without improving the result you need. |
| What modalities and modes are enabled? | Separate text, image, video, reasoning and agentic functions, with controls to turn them off. | Heavy modes can differ from simple text by orders of magnitude. |
| Is energy or emissions disclosure specific? | A dated methodology, model or workload definition, geography, electricity source and accounting boundary. | Without these details, “per prompt” claims are difficult to compare. |
| Can you limit and reuse output? | Length controls, editing, continuation, regeneration controls and ways to reuse a response. | Good controls help prevent accidental long generations and repeated work. |
| What happens to your data? | Retention period, training-use settings, regional processing and deletion controls. | A provider that meets energy criteria may still be unsuitable for confidential information. |
Read renewable-electricity claims carefully
“100% renewable” can describe annual matching certificates or a corporate accounting arrangement rather than electricity physically delivered to the data centre at the time your request runs. Check the location covered, the date, whether the claim concerns operations or the wider supply chain, and whether it uses market-based or location-based accounting. A transparent, narrower disclosure is more useful than an unqualified green label.
When no provider publishes comparable data, make the operational choice you can verify: select the least capable mode that works, keep prompts and outputs compact, and avoid unnecessary media generation. Do not infer that a provider is low-carbon solely from its brand, a renewable-energy announcement or a model name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you can and cannot control on your own device
Lowering screen brightness, closing unused applications and using an efficient device can reduce the electricity consumed locally. Those actions are worthwhile for household energy, but they do not directly reduce the remote data-centre computation for an inference request. A smart plug or turning off a monitor after submitting a prompt cannot cancel work already performed in the cloud.
To influence the cloud portion, change the request or service: avoid needless turns, select a lighter mode, limit the output, reuse a response and prefer providers that disclose meaningful efficiency and emissions information. Keep local-saving advice separate from claims about chatbot carbon.

Carbon intensity, timing and location
The same amount of electricity can have different emissions depending on the grid serving the data centre. Some providers route workloads among regions, while others do not disclose where a particular request runs. Unless a service publishes location-specific operational data, you cannot calculate a precise footprint from your own clock time or postcode.
Do not assume that asking at night is automatically cleaner. A lower-carbon hour may exist on a particular grid, but a chatbot user generally lacks control over routing, batching and the provider’s scheduling. If a provider offers a documented region or carbon-aware option, use the published scope and date when judging it; otherwise focus on avoiding unnecessary computation rather than attempting false precision.
Privacy and accessibility are part of a responsible choice
Energy reduction is not the only constraint. Do not send personal, medical, financial, legal or confidential company information to a service whose retention and training practices you have not checked. Redacting names and identifiers can reduce exposure, but it does not make every sensitive document safe to upload.
Accessibility may require longer explanations, repeated turns, speech, image descriptions or translation. Those uses have real value. A person should not shorten an answer that is needed to understand a medication instruction or operate assistive technology. Apply efficiency practices where they do not reduce safety, comprehension or independence.
A repeatable low-waste workflow
- Define the outcome. Decide what a successful answer must contain and whether a non-AI tool already solves it.
- Select the minimum capable mode. Start with ordinary text; enable image, video, extended reasoning or agentic features only when the task requires them.
- Prepare the input. Add the goal, essential context, constraints, date or region, format and length limit.
- Batch related questions. Put connected requests in one clearly structured prompt instead of repeating the same context across separate turns.
- Review the first result. If it is adequate, use it. If not, name the specific error and request only that correction.
- Reuse useful material. Ask for a summary, rewrite, extraction or format conversion of the existing answer rather than a fresh long response.
- Control media output. Set image dimensions, video duration and variant count before generation.
- Stop and store. Save a reusable answer or template, then close the session when the work is complete.
- Protect sensitive data. Apply the provider’s retention and regional-processing settings before submitting confidential content.
AI can also reduce emissions elsewhere—but benefits are not automatic
AI has potential uses beyond chatbots that could lower emissions: detecting methane leaks, improving power-plant efficiency, optimising industrial processes, selecting transport routes and controlling building heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In a widespread-adoption case, the IEA estimates that existing AI applications could enable about 1,400 Mt of CO2 reductions in 2035.
That figure is a potential reduction scenario, not a guaranteed offset for chatbot use. Net climate impact depends on whether applications are deployed effectively, whether savings are measured, what incentives and business cases govern them, and how regulation develops. Rebound effects can erase part of an efficiency gain: cheaper or faster AI may encourage more usage, more data-centre construction or additional consumption elsewhere. Providers and users therefore need both efficiency and restraint.
What the numbers mean for an individual user
It is reasonable to regard a short, necessary text request as a relatively light use compared with generating a video or running a long autonomous workflow. It is not reasonable to attach a universal carbon number to that request without knowing the model, hardware, location, electricity mix, cooling and accounting method. The IEA’s finding that simple text can use less electricity than a television over the same period provides scale, not a personal carbon calculator.
