Use AI for a clearly bounded work task, then describe exactly what it did, what you checked, and how you estimated any time difference. That approach is more credible than claiming that AI made you “more productive” based only on having used a chatbot or on an unmeasured impression.
A sound account separates four outcomes: AI use, time saved, work produced, and quality. They can move together, but none proves the others. A faster draft may require more fact-checking; saved time may become training or recovery rather than additional measured output.
Start by separating use, time, output and quality
“I used AI” describes an activity, not a result. Productivity generally concerns how much acceptable work is produced for the resources used. A worker can use a model and produce the same amount of work faster, produce more work in the same time, improve quality, or do none of these. Those are different claims and should be reported separately.

Keep the unit of analysis visible. A population estimate from a national survey cannot tell you what happened on your particular task. Likewise, a personal estimate cannot establish a company-wide productivity change.

What the available evidence actually shows
Recent surveys show substantial workplace use, but they measure different things and should not be blended into one “AI productivity” number.

The St. Louis analysis makes an important qualification: if employees finish the same tasks faster without their employers knowing, they may use the extra time as on-the-job leisure. That can improve well-being without appearing as measured productivity. The authors describe the possibility this way: “If workers are now able to complete the same tasks in less time without their employers’ knowledge, they may take their time savings as on-the-job leisure, which would increase welfare but not productivity.”
Use a bounded task, not a vague promise
Begin with the work problem and its acceptance criteria. “Use AI to make me productive” is not a testable assignment. “Create a first outline from the approved meeting notes, with headings matching the project brief” is bounded enough to review.

Suitable examples depend on your rules and the material involved. A first outline, a list of themes extracted from material you are permitted to process, or a routine message draft can be starting points. They are not automatically safe or appropriate in every job.
Write a one-sentence task specification
Record the input, intended output, quality standard and deadline. For example: “Turn these approved notes into a 10-point outline, preserve every cited figure, and flag anything that cannot be supported by the notes.” This gives you a baseline for checking the result.

Define the non-AI baseline
Before starting, state what you would otherwise do: write from scratch, search an internal knowledge base, use a spreadsheet formula, or ask a colleague. If you later estimate time saved, compare like with like. Do not compare an AI-assisted first draft with a finished, edited deliverable.
Pass the policy and data check before entering material
Check the employer’s acceptable-use, confidentiality, records-retention and security rules before opening a tool. Do not paste sensitive, protected or non-public information into a public service unless the applicable policy and safeguards expressly allow it. Use approved systems, access controls and redaction procedures where required.

Remove unnecessary data
- Replace names, account numbers, health details and confidential contract terms with neutral labels when the task does not require them.
- Send only the minimum excerpt needed for the transformation or analysis.
- Check where prompts and outputs are stored, who can access them and whether the service uses them for training.
- Keep the original source in the approved repository rather than moving it into an unapproved chat history.
Stop when the task crosses a boundary
Escalate if the work involves regulated information, an undisclosed client restriction, a pending legal matter, personnel records or a decision that could materially affect a person. A manager, privacy officer or security team can tell you whether an approved workflow exists.
A review-first workflow you can explain
- State the task and standard. Write the one-sentence specification and the non-AI baseline.
- Confirm permission and prepare inputs. Use an approved tool, remove unnecessary sensitive data and retain the authoritative source.
- Ask for a draft or transformation, not an unchecked decision. Give the model the format, audience, constraints and a request to flag uncertainty.
- Preserve the working record. Save the prompt or a concise description of it, the output version and the source material needed for review, subject to retention rules.
- Check against authoritative sources. Verify names, numbers, dates, quotations, calculations, citations, policy requirements and omitted material. Treat fluent wording as unverified until checked.
- Revise as the accountable worker. Correct errors, add missing context, reject unsupported claims and make the final judgment yourself.
- Record the contribution and result. Note the task, tool, human checks, final deliverable and how any time estimate was calculated.
The seventh step is what turns “AI helped” into an auditable account. It also makes it easier for a colleague to reproduce or challenge the work without assuming that the model was correct.

Measure a result without inflating it
Use a small, task-specific record rather than a sweeping claim. A useful comparison has the same scope, quality bar and reviewer in both conditions.

Label estimates as estimates
If a manual version normally takes 90 minutes and the complete AI-assisted process took 65 minutes, you can report an estimated 25-minute saving for that task under those conditions. Explain how the baseline was formed and include review time. Do not convert one observation into “AI makes me 28% more productive.”
If you did not record a baseline, say so: “The tool shortened my first-draft step, but I did not measure a comparable end-to-end saving.” That is more informative than inventing precision.
Do not count reclaimed time as automatic output
Use of the extra time is a separate outcome. It might support another deliverable, learning, coordination or rest. Only claim additional output when you can identify the additional accepted work and the conditions under which it was completed.
How to tell a manager what AI did
Use a narrow description that names the task, action, tool, purpose, checks and result. A practical format is:

“I used [tool] to [specific action] for [purpose]. I checked the result against [source or standard], corrected [material issues], and completed the final review myself. The end-to-end task took [time]. Compared with [baseline], I estimate [time difference], but this is an estimate rather than a measured productivity gain.”
Replace the bracketed elements with real details; do not claim checks you did not perform. If your organization requires a particular form, approval or log, use that process instead of relying on an informal message.
When disclosure is useful even if it is not required
Disclose use when another person must assess reliability, reproduce the work, protect confidential information or understand responsibility for a decision. A concise record prevents two opposite misunderstandings: that the model did everything, or that no tool was involved.

The CDC’s “Considerations for Disclosing Generative AI Use in Scientific Work,” dated May 28, 2026, recommends explaining the affected work, what the system did, which tool was used, the purpose and the human oversight. The CDC says its recommendations reflect best practices as of that date and are not exhaustive.

Apply stronger controls to consequential decisions
Do not let an unreviewed model output determine hiring, firing, promotion, pay, scheduling, access to benefits or another consequential employment outcome. The U.S. Department of Labor’s October 16, 2024 AI Best Practices roadmap emphasizes transparency, worker input, training, data protection and meaningful human oversight. Acting Secretary Julie Su summarized the aim: “We have a shared responsibility to ensure that AI is used to expand equality, advance equity, develop opportunity and improve job quality.”
Human oversight must be substantive, not a rubber stamp. The reviewer needs authority, time, relevant evidence and a way to reject or correct the recommendation. Document the criteria used and monitor for disparate errors or burdens, while following applicable organizational and legal requirements.
Three honest ways to describe common tasks
Routine message draft
“I used an approved writing assistant to produce a first draft from my bullet points. I checked names, dates and commitments against the project record, rewrote the tone for the recipient and sent the final version after review.” This describes assistance without claiming that communication quality was automatically improved.

Theme extraction from permitted material
“I asked the tool to group recurring themes in the customer comments I was authorized to process. I sampled the groups against the original comments, merged duplicate categories and reported the number of comments in each final group.” The account identifies both the machine step and the human validation.
Outline for a report
“The model proposed a structure from the approved notes. I checked every factual point against those notes, removed unsupported sections and wrote the analysis and conclusions.” An outline is not evidence that the report itself was generated or that the analysis is correct.
Claims to avoid and precise alternatives

What remains unknown
The cited studies do not establish the long-run causal effect of AI on an individual worker’s output, wages, workload or job security. The St. Louis authors identify workplace adjustment and whether gains eventually appear in aggregate productivity measures as open questions. Treat those as questions, not predictions.
Survey responses about performance or enjoyment are valuable descriptions of worker experience, but they are not causal estimates for every workplace. Occupation, task design, tool access, training, review burden and management practice can all change the result. A responsible account therefore stays close to the task and the evidence you actually have.

- Can I name the exact task and acceptable outcome?
- Was the tool and data use permitted under the applicable workplace rules?
- What did the model produce, and what did I write, decide or correct?
- Which source material, calculations and policy requirements did I check?
- Did I include review, rework and approval time?
- Is my time figure a measured comparison, a reasoned estimate or only an impression?
- Can I identify additional accepted output, rather than merely reclaimed time?
- Does the work affect another person’s employment, rights, safety or access to services, requiring stronger human oversight?
- Would a colleague understand the tool’s role and reproduce the key checks from my description?
If you can answer those questions, you can discuss AI use candidly: identify the bounded contribution, show the human control and attach every number to its method and limits. That is a stronger professional claim than pretending an unmeasured time impression is proof of higher productivity.
