What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To livestream a prerecorded gaming video on YouTube, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into encoder software, and use that software to play the video file. Start the encoder, check the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. YouTube creates the stream page; the encoder supplies the prerecorded gameplay.
Before you begin
- Your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16, according to YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- Choose encoder software that can play your video file. File selection, playlists, looping, and scheduling are encoder-specific; YouTube’s stream key does not play or schedule a video by itself.
- Have the video file ready and test the upload connection you will use for the stream.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- For an immediate broadcast, use the Stream tab. For a future event, open Manage → Schedule stream. Add the title, visibility, and other stream details. You can promote and share a scheduled stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key associated with that stream. Keep them together so you enter the matching pair in your encoder.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, tutorials, or public chat.
Enter the key and load the prerecorded gameplay
- Open your encoder’s stream settings. If it offers YouTube as a service, select it and follow the encoder’s prompts. Otherwise, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the server or URL field and the stream key into the key field. YouTube’s instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- In the encoder’s media or playback controls, select the prerecorded gameplay file. The control names and options vary by software, so use that encoder’s documentation for file playback, playlists, looping, or scheduling.
- Choose the ingest protocol supported by your encoder. RTMP is the usual encoder workflow. HLS is an alternative for compatible encoders and certain needs, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. It is not a general-purpose quality upgrade.
Test the feed, then go live
- Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed. YouTube recommends starting at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Wait for the video preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that it is the intended gameplay and that audio is present and at a suitable level.
- Check the stream title, visibility, and scheduled event. When the preview and details are correct, click Go live.
- Monitor the stream’s audio and video quality while it is running. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the total stream bitrate to allow headroom.
End the stream and protect the key
When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder from sending content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
YouTube allows a custom stream key to be reused. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old key in your encoder; the old value will no longer be the one to use.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Encoder does not connect | Confirm the correct scheduled stream is selected, the stream URL and key belong together, the encoder is sending, and the channel meets live-stream eligibility requirements. If you reset the key, update the encoder with the new one. |
| Stream connects but the preview is wrong or blank | Check that the encoder is playing the intended file and that its feed is going to the intended YouTube stream. File-loading controls vary by encoder. |
| Preview has no audio or poor audio | Check the encoder’s audio source and levels, then confirm audio in Live Control Room before going live. |
| Video or audio breaks during broadcast | Check the actual upload path and available bandwidth against the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; a network interruption can disrupt the feed. |
For encoder-specific errors or playback controls, consult that encoder’s documentation; YouTube’s general stream setup instructions do not define one universal file-playback workflow.
