To livestream a prerecorded podcast on YouTube, create or schedule a Live event, use an encoder that can play your finished video, enter the event’s stream URL and key in that encoder, then check the incoming preview before selecting Go live in YouTube Live Control Room. The key connects the encoder’s feed to YouTube; it does not upload or play the podcast by itself.
What a YouTube stream key does
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” They let an encoder send its video and audio feed to YouTube. You still need a playback source—software, an encoder, or a device that plays the finished podcast file and sends it as a live feed. A key alone cannot turn a file into a broadcast. YouTube’s stream key guidance explains the credential and its management.
Before you set up the broadcast
- Check channel eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. If you cannot start a stream, check the current Live Control Room for account-specific requirements. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Choose a playback method: Your software or hardware must play the podcast file and send it to YouTube as a live feed. YouTube identifies AJA HELO Plus, with PlayToStream, as one hardware option for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer; it is an example, not a requirement. YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- Check rights and permissions: Make sure you have the rights needed for every element in the recording, including music, clips, images, and guest contributions. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains copyright basics. A live broadcast should not be treated as a way to avoid YouTube’s policies or rights checks.
- Allow time to test: YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will work.
Create or schedule a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- For an advance announcement, open Manage and schedule a stream. A scheduled event gives you a watch page to share and lets viewers receive reminders, according to YouTube’s scheduling guidance.
- Open the intended stream or scheduled event in Live Control Room. Keep this event selected while copying its connection details so the encoder connects to the right broadcast.
Connect the podcast encoder with the stream key
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the selected event. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Open your encoder’s YouTube preset, if available. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into its server or URL field and the key into its stream-key field. The exact field names vary by encoder.
- Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it. To get the secure address, use the lock control beside Stream URL in Live Control Room and copy the RTMPS URL. If the encoder cannot connect, check that you copied the RTMPS address and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that port 443 may be needed for some encoder configurations. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- In the encoder, select the finished podcast file and configure playback so the file is sent as the live feed. Check that the intended video and audio are selected; graphics, opening slates, and other production elements depend on the encoder you use.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check picture, sound, and stream health before the audience arrives.
- When you are ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder feed.
Choose encoder settings that match the source and connection
There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every prerecorded podcast: the source file, encoder, and available upload connection matter. YouTube advises choosing a quality appropriate to the available upload connection. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported RTMP/RTMPS video codecs, with AAC or MP3 audio; whether you can select these options depends on the encoder. Use its YouTube or RTMPS preset when available, and test the actual recording’s movement and sound rather than assuming a static cover image will reveal every problem. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Protect and reuse the stream key
- Do not show the key in screenshots, overlays, recordings, or public instructions. Treat it like a password.
- YouTube supports custom keys for reuse. Reusing one can simplify recurring broadcasts, but confirm that the encoder is pointed at the intended event each time.
- If the key may have been exposed, a channel owner or manager can open YouTube Studio > Go Live > Stream, reset it, and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- YouTube’s getting-started guidance states limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. The page reviewed does not state a publication year, and YouTube’s operational guidance can change; check its current instructions before relying on those limits. Stream key guidance and live-streaming requirements.
Troubleshoot common stream-key problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is actively sending and that its server URL and key match the intended event. Recopy both from that event if needed. |
| RTMPS or SSL connection error | Make sure the server address is the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, not an ordinary RTMP address, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. If its configuration requires it, YouTube documents port 443 as a possible setting. |
| Picture or audio is weak or unstable | Test the recording before the event, choose quality appropriate to the upload connection, and monitor stream health. Check that the encoder is sending the intended audio and video tracks. |
| The wrong event receives the feed | Compare the selected event in Live Control Room with the URL and key saved in the encoder. Use the connection details for the intended scheduled stream. |
| The stream ends unexpectedly | Check the encoder and connection, and plan the program length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that automatic archive behavior for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more. YouTube’s stream guidance. |
