A reusable YouTube stream key lets an encoder reconnect to your channel without creating a new key for each broadcast. It does not play or loop a playlist by itself: your encoder or cloud service must keep sending the video and be set to repeat it. To run prerecorded videos continuously, create or select a reusable key in YouTube Studio, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in your encoder, configure the playlist to loop, then test the feed before leaving it live.
What a persistent YouTube stream key does—and does not do
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential that tells YouTube where to accept an encoder’s feed; it compares the key to a password and address for your stream. A custom key can be reused. Reusing a stream’s settings can also carry over its metadata, settings, and key, but it does not start the encoder or make a video playlist repeat automatically. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how the key and feed fit together.
The encoder or cloud service supplies the video. Configure that service’s media source or playlist to repeat, and keep the service running. The exact loop controls differ by encoder, so follow that application’s own instructions for repeating a playlist.
Before you set up a continuous stream
- Confirm your channel can go live. YouTube’s current guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- Choose where the encoder will run. Software on a computer, a standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud streaming service can supply the feed. With local software or hardware, the device and its internet connection must remain available. A cloud service can operate the feed remotely; check its current playlist, reconnect, and monitoring features before relying on it.
- Plan for a long broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archive or offer full rewind. Keep the original media and arrange separate recording or backup if preserving the entire playlist matters: archive guidance and DVR guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. If someone else obtains it, reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
Set up and use the reusable key
- Open YouTube Studio’s live controls. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then open the Stream tab. Under Select stream key, choose an existing key or create a custom one if you need a stable key and settings for repeated connections. YouTube’s interface labels can change; use the current Stream tab’s key selector.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its sign-in or connection flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and paste the reusable key into its stream-key field. Avoid sharing screenshots or configuration files that expose the key.
- Configure the video source to repeat. Add the prerecorded file or playlist as the encoder’s media source and enable repeat or loop in that application. Confirm what happens when the final item ends: the source should return to the start rather than stop or wait for manual input. A reusable key does not provide these playback controls.
- Apply YouTube’s standard encoder recommendations. For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Use AAC or MP3 audio, and choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for current recommendations. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular device or connection can run continuously.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start the feed and wait for it to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm the video, audio, stream health, and the intended watch-page visibility before you leave the stream running. For a scheduled stream, check the preview in Live Control Room and start the stream there if the configured controls require it.
- Monitor the live feed. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring audio and video quality. Check that the playlist advances and returns to the beginning, that sound remains present, and that the stream stays healthy. If the encoder stops, the key alone cannot restore the video feed: restart or reconnect the encoder, then confirm that YouTube receives it again.
- Stop the stream deliberately. When the broadcast should end, stop the encoder’s feed and verify the live session has ended in YouTube Studio. Auto-start and auto-stop settings can affect whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or ends the YouTube stream.
Limits and edge cases for 24/7 playback
Long streams, archives, and DVR
The under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance does not establish that YouTube will create a complete recording of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. DVR may also be limited or unavailable after a stream passes 12 hours. For an archive or reliable rewind, retain the original playlist files and use a separate recording plan rather than relying on the live stream archive.

Stream limits and key reuse
YouTube’s live-streaming help says a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key can be used for up to 3 active streams. These are YouTube platform limits, not a reason to run several simultaneous feeds from one key unless your setup requires it. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
When HLS applies
RTMPS is the standard recommendation for ordinary RTMP encoder workflows. HLS is a separate ingestion option for compatible workflows, not an extra setting to mix into a basic RTMPS setup. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments; its HLS setup uses transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Use HLS instructions only when your encoder or workflow specifically requires it: YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Copyright and channel policies
A stream key does not grant rights to the videos or music in a playlist, and reusing a key does not change YouTube’s policies. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before running a continuous feed. A 24/7 format does not exempt a channel from enforcement or other eligibility requirements.
Troubleshoot a persistent-key playlist
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | The encoder is stopped, or the server URL/key was entered incorrectly. | Compare the encoder’s server field and key with the current values in YouTube Studio. Start or reconnect the encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The stream starts but the playlist ends | The media source is not set to repeat, or the encoder stops when the playlist finishes. | Enable loop/repeat in the encoder’s playlist or source settings and test through the final item to confirm playback returns to the beginning. |
| The preview never appears | Live access may not be activated, or the encoder has not established a valid feed. | Confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility. For first-time access, allow up to 24 hours for activation; then recheck the stream URL, key, and encoder connection. |
| Video or audio is unstable | The selected bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain, or the source audio/video may be misconfigured. | Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and encoder output. Lower settings to match available upload capacity, retain constant bitrate and the recommended keyframe interval, and verify the audio source. |
| The archived stream is incomplete or viewers cannot rewind far back | The stream exceeds the documented archive or DVR conditions. | Do not depend on a full archive or DVR for a 24/7 broadcast. Preserve the source files and use an independent recording or backup plan if needed. |
