YouTube Live scheduling creates an event and watch page; it does not play prerecorded video for you. To run a 24/7 prerecorded channel, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder or streaming service to keep sending the video feed. A continuous channel also needs a plan for stream interruptions, event boundaries, and archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not establish that one scheduled event can run indefinitely.
What scheduling does—and what it does not do
A scheduled YouTube Live stream gives viewers an event page they can share and a way to get reminders. The schedule sets up the event; a software encoder, hardware encoder, or hosted service must supply the live feed at the scheduled time. YouTube’s setup instructions cover scheduling and connecting an encoder, not an unlimited, self-running 24/7 event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
For an always-on prerecorded channel, think of these as two separate jobs: the scheduled event manages the YouTube destination, while the encoder or service plays and sends the program. Plan how you will handle session boundaries and interruptions rather than assuming one scheduled broadcast will run forever.
Before you schedule the event
- Enable live streaming. If this is your first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before your intended start. YouTube Help
- Prepare the prerecorded program. Confirm the video, audio, playlist, and loop behavior in the encoder or service you plan to use; scheduling alone does not provide or repeat media.
- Choose a reliable output. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and available upload capacity. Test the complete setup before relying on it for a continuous channel. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube live streaming tips
- Protect the stream key. The stream key lets the encoder connect to your YouTube stream. Treat it like a password and do not share it publicly. Manage live stream settings
Schedule and start the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Choose to reuse prior settings or create a new stream. Scheduling lets you prepare an event page to share and allows viewers to opt in to reminders. YouTube Help
- Set the event details and schedule it for the time you want viewers to arrive. Check the event page and settings before sharing its URL.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Keep the key private.
- Configure the encoder to play and send the prerecorded program. Start the encoder when you are ready to send the feed.
- Wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room, check picture and sound, and select Go live. YouTube’s documented workflow calls for confirming the preview before going live. YouTube Help
- To finish the event, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed. For a 24/7 channel, decide in advance how you will transition to the next event or recover from an interruption; the cited YouTube guidance does not specify a universal scheduling cadence for continuous channels.
Encoder settings for a prerecorded feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as a starting point, not a one-size-fits-all bitrate recipe. The right bitrate depends on the resolution and frame rate you send, as well as the connection’s upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

- Codec: The current guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 options; availability depends on the encoder and workflow you use.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube recommends.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Match the stream to your source where practical.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends not exceeding four seconds.
- Bitrate and resolution: Select the matching combination from YouTube’s table for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then verify that your upload connection can sustain it. Do not apply one bitrate to every output quality.
Test the actual playback path, including audio, before the scheduled start. During a live session, watch the preview and stream health rather than assuming that a successful connection means the full program is reaching viewers correctly. YouTube live streaming tips
Choose how the prerecorded feed will run
YouTube recognizes software encoders, hardware encoders, and third-party software or services in its encoder information. That recognition is not a comparative reliability or pricing assessment. Choose based on who or what will keep the program playing and sending, how it recovers, and how you will monitor it. YouTube encoder listings

| Approach | What to check for a 24/7 channel |
|---|---|
| Software encoder | Confirm it can play or loop your prerecorded material, restart after an app or network failure, and run on a computer that can remain on. Consider monitoring, setup effort, and the cost of keeping the machine and connection available. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Check the exact model’s support for scheduled prerecorded playback, your media formats, remote monitoring, recovery, and budget. YouTube’s encoder page describes optional AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer; it does not establish current availability or pricing for a particular listing. YouTube encoder listings |
| Hosted or cloud encoder | Compare scheduling and looping controls, recovery, alerts, media storage limits, geographic or data considerations, and total cost. YouTube’s encoder list includes third-party services but does not establish any provider’s 24/7 performance or price. |
Plan for archives, interruptions, and channel rules
Archives and event length
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast being archived as a single video; the cited guidance does not promise an archive for an event of that length. If saved replays matter, plan event boundaries and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Interruptions and monitoring
A continuous channel needs a source that keeps sending video and a way to notice when the feed stops or degrades. Test a restart and recovery path before depending on the setup, and monitor picture, audio, and stream health during operation. The YouTube tips recommend testing and monitoring, but do not specify a single universal 24/7 operating schedule. YouTube live streaming tips

Copyright and monetization suitability
Scheduling a broadcast does not grant rights to the prerecorded material. Make sure you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other content you send, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. Do not assume that repeating material automatically qualifies for monetization; scheduling guidance does not determine whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules.
