Yes. A Raspberry Pi can read a video from a USB SSD, loop it with FFmpeg, and send it to YouTube Live. The SSD can hold only the video; your Raspberry Pi can still boot from its usual microSD card. The essential FFmpeg option is -stream_loop -1, placed before the input file’s -i option.

What you need to set up

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A Raspberry Pi running an operating system with FFmpeg installed.
  • A USB SSD and a suitable cable or enclosure. Check compatibility with your Pi, its USB interface, and the drive’s power requirements.
  • A video file the Pi can read and FFmpeg can handle.
  • A YouTube Live event and its ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A sustained internet upload connection suitable for your chosen video settings.

USB mass-storage boot is optional. The Pi can boot from a microSD card and use the SSD solely as media storage. Available boot options depend on the Raspberry Pi model; check that model’s current boot instructions if you do want to boot from USB.

Connect the SSD and find the video file

Mount the drive

Connect the SSD and confirm that the operating system recognizes and mounts it. Use the drive’s actual mount location when referring to the video. Do not assume it will always appear as /dev/sda1: device names can change after a reboot or when devices are connected in a different order. Mounting steps and filesystem support vary by operating system and setup, so use the instructions for your installed OS rather than relying on a universal command.

Check access and power

Make sure the account that will run FFmpeg can read the video file. If the drive disconnects, resets, or the Pi reports undervoltage, investigate power before treating the problem as an FFmpeg issue. Raspberry Pi documentation cautions that USB disks and SSDs have power requirements. More than one attached disk typically calls for a powered enclosure or powered USB hub; that does not mean every single SSD needs one.

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Get the YouTube Live URL and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live event you want to use.
  2. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that event.
  3. Use the URL and key in FFmpeg’s output address. YouTube treats the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share a command containing the real key.

Use the details for the selected event, not a guessed or copied address from an unrelated stream. Keep credentials out of shell history where practical; a command-line example with a placeholder is safer to share than one containing a real key.

Loop the SSD video with FFmpeg

This illustrative command reads a file from the SSD, asks FFmpeg to repeat it indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an RTMPS output. Replace the input path and the two output placeholders with your actual values:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -stream_loop -1 requests infinite repetition of the input. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i.
  • -re asks FFmpeg to read at the input’s native rate, which is useful for real-time output. Whether it belongs in your final command depends on the source and output details.
  • -c:v libx264 selects the software H.264 encoder if that encoder is present in your FFmpeg build. Encoder availability and performance vary by build and Pi hardware.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize are example video rate-control settings, not a guarantee that the Pi can encode at that rate or that it matches your event’s requirements.
  • -g 60 sets a keyframe interval in frames, not seconds. Its time interval depends on the input or output frame rate; adjust it to meet the keyframe target for your actual frame rate.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k selects AAC audio at an example bitrate. If the file has no audio, or its audio format needs different handling, adapt the audio options.
  • -f flv selects the output container used by this RTMP/RTMPS-style streaming command.

This is a starting shape, not a tested Raspberry Pi configuration. Before relying on it, confirm your local FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and RTMPS output, and test the actual file, resolution, frame rate, audio, CPU load, and stream health. Hardware-accelerated encoding may be available on some setups, but support depends on the model, operating system, and FFmpeg build; do not assume the example uses it.

Match the stream to YouTube’s current recommendations

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS streaming; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include:

Output format YouTube-recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that a particular Pi can encode reliably at either setting. Pick a resolution and bitrate that the Pi can sustain and that your upload connection can carry. The example command uses a 3 Mbps video target; it does not itself guarantee CBR behavior or a two-second keyframe interval. Confirm the effective output settings for your chosen frame rate and FFmpeg configuration. YouTube’s guidance can change, so check its current encoder settings when configuring a stream.

Test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. A static or silent test may not reveal issues that appear with the actual content.

Troubleshoot common problems

The input file cannot be opened

  • Check that the SSD is mounted and the path in -i exactly matches the file’s location.
  • Check that the account running FFmpeg has permission to read the file.
  • If the drive’s device name changed, use its current mount location rather than assuming an earlier device path remains valid.

The SSD disconnects or the Pi reports power problems

Check the cable, connection, and power arrangement. If you have multiple USB disks attached, a powered hub or powered enclosure may be needed. Do not add one automatically for a single SSD without first checking the actual symptoms and hardware requirements.

FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol

The installed FFmpeg build may not include libx264 or RTMPS support. Check the version and capabilities of the local build, then use an encoder and output protocol it supports. Replacing an option blindly will not resolve a missing capability.

The stream starts but drops frames or YouTube reports poor health

Check CPU load and whether the Pi can sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. Also check sustained upload capacity and compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations. Lowering the output demands can help distinguish a device-encoding limit from a network problem.

The video repeats, but audio or the loop point is wrong

Test the source file locally and inspect its audio and duration. FFmpeg loops the input; it does not make separate clips match seamlessly. If there is no audio, or the file’s audio requires different encoding, change the audio options rather than assuming the example fits every file.

YouTube rejects the stream or raises a content issue

Confirm that the event is live and that its current ingest URL and stream key are being used. Separately, make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video and audio. A technical loop does not establish permission to broadcast copyrighted material, and YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content still apply.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than learning or maintaining the Pi setup, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed.
