If your Android phone still shows an image but its touchscreen does not work, a compatible USB mouse—and optionally a keyboard—can let you operate the phone. If the display is black or unreadable, a mouse cannot make the interface visible: you need a model that supports external video output, or you may need repair.
First, identify what is broken
The right fix depends on whether you can see the phone’s interface:
- Image visible, touch not working: connect a USB mouse with an adapter that fits your phone’s port. Add a keyboard if useful.
- Display black or unreadable: mouse and keyboard alone will not help. Check whether your exact phone model supports wired video output to an external display.
A USB-C-shaped port does not, by itself, establish that a phone can send video to HDMI. Android connected-display behavior varies by device; check the manufacturer’s current support information for your exact model before buying an adapter. Google’s connected-display guidance explains that availability and behavior vary.
If the image is visible but touch is broken
Connect a wired mouse or keyboard
- Check which port your phone has—typically USB-C or, on older models, Micro-USB.
- Get an adapter that fits that port and accepts the USB plug on your mouse. This is often sold as a USB OTG adapter. Confirm USB host support and compatibility for your specific phone rather than assuming every adapter works.
- Connect the adapter to the phone, then plug in the mouse. If the phone responds, a pointer should let you select items on the visible screen.
- If you also want keyboard input, connect a compatible USB keyboard. Google says Android supports connecting a keyboard or mouse over USB or Bluetooth and using a mouse and keyboard at the same time. See Android accessibility guidance.
If no pointer appears, check that the phone is powered on and responsive, the adapter fits securely, and the phone supports USB host input. Try another compatible adapter or mouse if available. The cited Android guidance does not establish universal USB OTG compatibility across all handsets.

A mouse or keyboard provides input; it does not bypass the lock screen or remove encryption. You may still need your normal PIN, password, pattern, or other unlock method.
If the display is black or unreadable
Check whether the exact model supports wired video
Before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI hub, verify that your phone supports wired display output. The available guidance is model-specific: Samsung’s documented Galaxy procedure requires Android 12 or later and DisplayPort support; Google’s cited wired projection guidance covers Pixel 8 and later. Neither establishes that every Android phone with USB-C can output video.

Samsung Galaxy: use Samsung’s documented setup
Samsung’s instructions apply to eligible Galaxy phones, not Android phones generally. Its support page, last updated June 17, 2026, specifies a Galaxy running Android 12 or later that supports DisplayPort. The setup requires a USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A ports, an HDMI display and cable, and wired mouse and keyboard; Samsung notes these accessories are not included with the phone. - Connect the HDMI display and the wired mouse and keyboard to the hub.
- Press and hold both volume buttons while connecting the hub to the phone, as Samsung instructs.
- Check the external display. Samsung says the phone screen may appear mirrored or Samsung DeX may open.
- If DeX opens, unlock the phone or exit DeX before proceeding to Smart Switch, following Samsung’s instructions.
If your phone has no supported wired-display route
An HDMI hub cannot add video-output capability that the phone lacks. An already-configured casting method may be worth trying only if it can be started or approved without using the broken screen; casting is not a guaranteed workaround. If the phone cannot be operated and has no compatible external-display option, repair or authorized service may be the practical next step. Google recommends contacting an authorized repair center in its blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.

Connecting a USB cable to a computer does not automatically unlock the phone or expose its files. Google’s standard procedure requires you to unlock the device, tap its USB notification, and choose “File Transfer.” It also notes that not all USB cables transfer files. This method is most plausible when the screen remains usable or you can operate the phone through a working mouse and, if needed, an external display. If the display is unusable and you cannot unlock or approve the transfer, a computer connection alone may not provide access to private data.
