To control OBS with a Stream Deck, install Elgato’s OBS integration, place OBS actions on keys in the Stream Deck app, and test each key against your actual YouTube output. You can map scene changes, source muting, media controls, and stream start/stop. A Stream Deck is a control surface, not an uptime system: it cannot keep a computer or internet connection available, monitor a broadcast by itself, or guarantee a complete 24/7 YouTube archive.
What you need before mapping keys
- OBS Studio with your broadcast scenes and sources prepared.
- Stream Deck software and Elgato’s free OBS plugin, available through the Elgato Marketplace or the Stream Deck app.
- A configured YouTube live stream and its stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A test plan to confirm that each button affects OBS and that the resulting video and audio reach YouTube as intended.
Elgato’s integration documentation lists Stream Deck 5.3 or newer and OBS Studio 27.0 or newer as requirements for the documented integration. These are documented version floors, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current operating system or release; check the plugin listing and app requirements for your setup before installing.
Set up the OBS controls on your Stream Deck
1. Prepare OBS scenes and sources
In OBS, create and name the scenes you will use during the broadcast. Add the relevant video, audio, and media sources, then make sure the starting scene is ready. Stream Deck actions can target scenes, source visibility, audio mute, Studio Mode, transitions, media sources, and stream start or stop. Source-visibility actions depend on the currently selected OBS Scene Collection, so check that collection before assigning or testing them.
2. Install the OBS integration
- Install and open Stream Deck software, then install Elgato’s OBS Studio plugin through the Stream Deck app or Elgato Marketplace.
- Open OBS and Stream Deck, and confirm the plugin’s OBS actions are available in the Stream Deck action list.
- If the actions do not appear or do not connect, check that the installed OBS and Stream Deck versions meet the documented requirements, then consult the plugin’s current compatibility information.
3. Assign a small, legible set of keys
Drag an OBS action from the Stream Deck action list onto a key, then configure its target in the action settings. Start with only the controls you need while operating live:
#1 Best Overall
- 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
- A named scene-selection key for the intended starting or standby scene.
- A mute toggle for the microphone or other source whose audio you may need to silence quickly.
- A media restart or stop control if a media source is part of the program.
- A stream start/stop control, clearly distinguished from routine scene or audio controls.
Use unambiguous labels and icons. Keep a stop-stream action away from buttons pressed frequently during normal operation, and avoid labels that could expose private information. A key is only a command to OBS; it does not verify that YouTube accepted the change.
4. Use Multi Actions cautiously
Elgato Multi Actions can run a configured sequence from one key, with delays between actions. For example, a sequence could select a starting scene, wait, start local recording, wait again, and then start the stream. A delay gives OBS time between commands, but it does not prove that a prior command succeeded. Test every sequence repeatedly, and retain individual keys so you can recover if one step fails.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it on a Stream Deck label, expose it in a screen capture, or share it publicly.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key as the encoder destination and credential. Confirm the selected service and settings correspond to the stream you chose in YouTube Studio.
- Use the Stream Deck key to start the OBS stream, or start it from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the incoming preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room and complete the go-live action required by that stream’s configuration.
- Check the actual YouTube playback, not just the OBS canvas. Confirm the intended scene, video, and audio are reaching viewers.
Stream Deck controls OBS through Elgato’s integration; it does not replace OBS or YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube explains stream setup and stream keys in its live encoder setup guidance.

Test the broadcast before relying on it
Run a test stream before putting the setup into unattended use. Elgato keys may appear to work inside OBS while the wrong scene, muted source, or unexpected output is going to YouTube. Verify the whole chain:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press each mapped key and check the corresponding OBS action and YouTube output.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before completing the go-live step.
- Verify audio levels and listen to playback from another device or the watch page.
- If you are recording locally, confirm the archive file is being created and growing.
- Check playback on mobile or another device, and keep monitoring audio and video quality while live.
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend advance setup, preview checks, checking local archive files, and ongoing monitoring. A successful button press alone is not a health check.
Can an OBS stream run 24/7 from a Stream Deck?
It can be started and controlled with Stream Deck, but the controller does not make the broadcast reliably unattended. If the computer loses power, OBS closes, or the internet connection drops, the key cannot fix the underlying outage. Elgato’s documented actions do not constitute a 24/7 uptime guarantee or a universal automatic-recovery setup.

Plan who or what will notice a failure, how OBS and the computer will be restarted, and how you will verify the picture and sound after recovery. YouTube’s guidance supports continuous monitoring and local recording checks; it does not prescribe one automatic Stream Deck recovery workflow. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance can help diagnose streaming problems.
Understand YouTube’s long-stream archive limit
YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026 says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, YouTube warns it may not be captured at all; DVR functionality can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including broadcasts longer than 12 hours. Do not assume a single continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay or full rewind history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf keeping the program matters, record locally and plan a deliberate segmentation and archive workflow. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup; its archive guidance and DVR guidance explain the relevant limitations.

Choose a Stream Deck layout that suits the operator
Choose a device by the number of controls you need visible at once, desk space, and whether dials would help. Elgato’s profile documentation lists these device types and key counts:
| Device type | Keys listed | Dial support |
|---|---|---|
| Stream Deck Mini | 6 | Not listed in the cited profile documentation |
| Stream Deck Neo | 8 | Not listed in the cited profile documentation |
| Standard Stream Deck | 15 | Not listed in the cited profile documentation |
| Stream Deck XL | 32 | Not listed in the cited profile documentation |
| Stream Deck + | Not stated as a single key count in the cited profile documentation | Options with dials |
These are the counts and options in Elgato’s profile documentation, not a current stock or compatibility guarantee. The OBS integration’s actions are software features; the cited documentation does not establish that a particular Stream Deck model improves uptime.
Profiles can separate layouts and include plugin actions, folders, and pages. Elgato notes that profiles are specific to the operating system and device type. For a live control surface, keep the broadcast profile easy to identify and avoid automatic app-based profile switching that could hide important keys while OBS is running.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded video without leaving OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Its monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
