Use a screenshot API to render a purpose-built HTML/CSS social card, save the resulting image at a stable public URL, and point your page’s Open Graph metadata to it. Then check the actual preview on the platforms where people will share the page. The API creates the image; your page metadata and image hosting make it usable as a preview.
Build a dedicated social-card page
Rather than screenshotting an entire article, create a small HTML page whose only job is to render the preview card. Add the information you want visible—typically the page title, author, site name, or a short description—and pass page-specific values into the template. Set a fixed canvas in CSS and design within it. A 1200 × 630-pixel card is a common implementation choice shown in vendor examples, not a dimension mandated by the Open Graph protocol. For example:

</html>For production, make the template read escaped values from your application or a controlled data source. Avoid injecting raw user-provided HTML. Ensure the template’s fonts and other assets can load in the screenshot service’s browser; if they need extra time, use a capture delay or a wait condition supported by your provider.

Render the card with an API and keep the image
Send the template’s public URL and the page-specific parameters to a screenshot API. Choose a capture viewport matching the card, or select the card element if the page includes anything outside it. Select an output format and quality appropriate to your design and destination. The OpenGraph.io reference documents controls including format, quality, full-page capture, viewport presets, element selection, dark mode, and capture delay: Screenshot API parameters. Providers differ; check their request syntax, limits, authentication, and whether a returned URL expires.
Save the image bytes or copy the generated image into storage you control, such as your site’s media storage or a CDN. Set the eventual image URL to a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS address. Do not assume a screenshot service’s temporary response URL is permanent: OpenGraph.io says its screenshot links expire after 24 hours. If page content changes, generate a fresh asset and use a new image URL when you need to avoid stale cached versions. Add Open Graph metadata to the page being shared
Put metadata in the shared page’s <head>, not merely in the standalone card template. Replace the example values with the actual page title, canonical URL, public image URL, dimensions, and a useful image description:

If you provide multiple og:image properties, order them deliberately: the protocol says the first property value is preferred when values conflict. Do not rely on later entries to override the first.
Choose dimensions for the destination, not by assumption
Open Graph defines metadata fields; it does not impose one universal pixel size for every social preview. A 1200 × 630 canvas appears in vendor examples and guidance as a broadly useful starting point. Screenshot API’s guide also describes a separate 1200 × 675 option for X when a 16:9 card is desired. These are implementation recommendations, not protocol requirements. Check the destination’s current crop and display behavior, then inspect the rendered result there.

- Whether the API renders a hosted URL, supplied HTML, or both, and whether it accepts dynamic values.
- Whether you can set viewport dimensions or capture a selected element.
- Supported image formats and quality controls.
- Authentication and request limits relevant to your workload.
- Whether responses return image bytes or URLs, how long URLs remain valid, and whether you can cache or persist output.

Verify the preview and troubleshoot failures
Test what crawlers and platforms actually retrieve, not just what your own browser displays. The Screenshot API guide recommends Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector, and suggests sharing to yourself on X and checking an unfurl in Slack. These tools and platform behavior can change, so confirm current availability. After any metadata or image update, inspect the platform preview again; platforms may cache prior data.

- The preview has no image: Check that the shared page includes an absolute
og:imageURL and that it opens publicly without a login or authentication wall. Confirm the URL returns the image itself. - The wrong image or crop appears: Open the rendered file and check its actual dimensions. Make sure the API captured the card element or the intended viewport, rather than the whole page.
- The preview is stale after an update: Publish the new image at a new URL if appropriate, then use the platform’s available refresh/debugging tool and verify the resulting unfurl.
- The screenshot is missing fonts or other assets: Confirm the browser can access them and use a supported wait condition or capture delay before rendering.
- Multiple images produce an unexpected choice: Review the order of repeated
og:imagetags; the Open Graph protocol gives precedence to the first value in a conflict. - The image URL stops working later: Check whether the API’s returned URL expires. Persist the returned image on your own stable public storage if it must remain available for future shares.
