To loop a prerecorded video during a scheduled YouTube Live event, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, send it a looping video feed from an encoder, then start the event after checking its preview. The scheduled event creates the watch page and start time; the encoder—not YouTube Studio—plays and repeats the video.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- The prerecorded video file and an encoder that can play it repeatedly. YouTube supports encoder software and hardware, but the loop control depends on the encoder you choose.
- The scheduled event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A reliable computer and network connection for a software encoder, or compatible hardware. Keep the device awake and the encoder running for the full event.
A scheduled event and its video feed are separate: scheduling establishes the event and watch page, while the encoder sends the audio and video. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the connection and supported workflow: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Choose Manage, then select the option to schedule a stream.
- Enter the event details, audience and planned start time, then save the scheduled stream.
- Open that event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. Use the credentials for this event, not a different scheduled stream. YouTube cautions: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. See Manage live stream settings.
Scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds and let viewers choose a notification. Check the event’s watch page after scheduling so you can share the correct link. YouTube documents scheduling and reminders in its live stream settings guidance.
Configure an encoder to loop the video
Computer and software encoder
- Open your encoder and select its media-file playback or playlist source.
- Add the prerecorded video, then enable that encoder’s repeat or loop option. The exact control and behavior vary by application; check the selected encoder’s current documentation. YouTube’s guide explains encoder connections but does not define one universal file-loop setting.
- Enter the scheduled event’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings.
- Configure video and audio to match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS for encrypted transport. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Start the encoder and confirm the scheduled event receives the feed. Check the Live Control Room preview for both picture and sound before starting the public event.
Dedicated hardware encoder
YouTube also identifies the AJA HELO Plus as a hardware option: its PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It is an alternative to the software-encoder workflow, not a requirement. Confirm current product capabilities, cost and availability with AJA before choosing hardware. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this option.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Run a preflight, then start the event
- Set up and test the encoder well before the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Start the encoder early enough for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the video loops as intended, audio is audible, and stream health has no warnings.
- Open the event’s watch page and verify it is the scheduled event you intend to run. For a private rehearsal, use an unlisted test stream.
- When the preview is ready and you intend to begin, select Go live in Live Control Room. Use auto-start only if you have deliberately enabled and tested that setting.
- During the event, monitor stream health and the watch page. YouTube recommends checking the preview and testing representative audio and motion rather than assuming that a successful encoder connection means the whole setup is sound.
End the stream and protect the recording
When the planned run is over, stop the YouTube event and then stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or another archive for a long loop instead of relying on YouTube’s archive as your only copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose a setup that fits the run
| Route | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer with software encoder | Sends a video file to the scheduled event and can repeat it using the encoder’s playback controls. | Loop behavior, scheduled start and recovery options, computer sleep settings, and whether local recording is available. These depend on the chosen encoder. |
| AJA HELO Plus hardware | YouTube names PlayToStream as a way to schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. | Whether hardware scheduling suits your needs, local recording behavior, and current cost and availability. These details are not established by YouTube’s guide. |
| StreamNeo cloud service | Keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube stream from the cloud. | Useful when you do not want a computer or home connection to remain on; details are below. |
Troubleshooting common problems
The event has no preview
Check that the encoder is running, that it uses the stream URL and key belonging to the scheduled event, and that the outgoing connection is configured for YouTube. Recheck the key in Live Control Room if needed; avoid sharing it publicly.

The video plays once and stops
The event does not repeat the file. Enable looping in the encoder’s media playback or playlist controls, then confirm the transition back to the beginning in the preview before going live.
The preview appears, but there is no sound or the image is wrong
Check the encoder’s selected media source and audio routing, then compare its output format with YouTube’s encoder settings. Test with representative motion and audio and wait for the preview to show the corrected feed.

The stream health reports a problem
Inspect the encoder’s bitrate mode, codec, keyframe interval and connection settings against YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS. Re-test the actual feed before relying on it.
The computer stops sending the feed
A computer-based encoder requires the computer and network connection to remain available. Check sleep or power-saving settings, encoder status and the connection. If the broadcast must continue without a computer at home, consider hardware scheduling or a cloud service.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and monetization considerations
Using a scheduled event does not grant rights to the prerecorded video, music or other material in it. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright rules before streaming. Also, a live event’s format alone does not establish monetization eligibility; check YouTube’s current channel and monetization policies rather than assuming a repeated prerecorded stream qualifies.
