Yes—a Raspberry Pi can be used as a small Linux encoder to send a prerecorded retail loop to YouTube Live. The basic setup is to enable live streaming on your channel, prepare video you have the rights to use, configure an encoder on the Pi to repeat the file and send it to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key, then check the preview in Live Control Room before going live. The available Raspberry Pi project evidence describes an automated FFmpeg-and-systemd workflow, but does not validate a particular Pi model or provide a tested command for this exact use. Treat the configuration below as a starting point to adapt and test, not a guaranteed 24/7 setup.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi set up to run Linux, with enough storage for the operating system and your loop video. No particular model or storage specification is established here for this workload.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity suitable for the stream’s resolution and bitrate.
- A video file and rights to all of its components, including music, product imagery, graphics, and other included material.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- An encoder on the Pi that can read and repeat the video and send a stream to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; its general setup is not a certification of any particular Raspberry Pi or software build.
Prepare the channel and retail video
Enable live streaming
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the channel’s live-stream setup prompts. If this is the first time the channel has streamed, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Once enabled, YouTube says later streams can go live instantly. The exact labels may vary as Studio changes.
Check permissions before encoding
YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the content on Google services. A retail loop is not exempt because it is prerecorded or played in a shop. Confirm that your license covers streaming to YouTube and includes every element in the file. YouTube’s Terms of Service set out the applicable terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Its Help page states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a warning, replacement of the stream with a placeholder, interruption, or termination if the material remains. Even if you have a license, Content ID may still interrupt the stream unless the rights owner allowlists your channel. Secure the rights and, where relevant, ask the owner to allowlist the channel before broadcasting. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Review the loop as a whole
Check that the file plays correctly from beginning to end, including its audio, transitions, and any required product or legal information. If the loop is intended to run continuously, decide whether a seamless restart matters and test the file’s final-to-first-frame transition. This is a content-preparation check; it does not guarantee YouTube acceptance or monetization.
Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select an existing stream. Choose the encoder connection workflow offered by Studio.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube may provide an RTMPS ingest URL; prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes it as RTMP over an SSL connection and recommends it for secure ingest.
- Enter the server URL and key in the encoder configuration on the Pi. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, or shared log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
YouTube documents connecting an encoder by using its YouTube integration or manually entering the server URL and stream key. Its walkthrough is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Configure the Raspberry Pi encoder
Use FFmpeg as an adaptable example, not a verified Pi recipe
A Raspberry Pi-oriented community project describes automating YouTube streaming with FFmpeg and systemd. It is not a test report for this retail-loop use case, and it does not establish performance for a particular board. The following is a schematic example of the settings and workflow to adapt; it is not a copy-and-run command. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the input, codecs, and RTMPS protocol you intend to use, and test the result on your Pi before relying on it.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/retail-loop.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace every capitalized setting and path with values appropriate to your video, encoder build, and YouTube stream settings. The example uses a repeating input option and sends the encoded output in a format commonly used for RTMP-family ingest; it does not prove the Pi can encode your chosen resolution or frame rate. Keep credentials out of shell history and source control: a protected configuration file or secret-handling method is safer than embedding the key in a script.

Choose settings from upload capacity and YouTube guidance
There is no universal bitrate in this guide because the right value depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload connection’s reliable capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Its encoder guidance also lists supported ingest protocols and codecs; consult the current table before selecting your encoder settings: YouTube Live encoder settings.
- Run an upload speed test on the connection the Pi will actually use. Select a stream quality that fits reliable upload capacity, not just a best-case result.
- Match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate between the file/encoder and the intended stream. Test representative motion and audio; a static product slide and a moving promotional segment can behave differently.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it, and confirm that the destination is the server URL for the selected YouTube stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a private or unlisted test before relying on a public broadcast.
Make it restart automatically only after testing
A Raspberry Pi project uses systemd to automate a YouTube streaming workflow, so a service manager can be considered for starting an encoder process on boot and restarting it after a process failure. The existence of that project does not establish a supported configuration for your board, loop, or account. First verify that a manually started stream is stable; then configure and test any automatic startup or restart behavior. A process restart does not itself prove that YouTube has accepted the reconnect or that the stream is healthy.

Test, go live, and end the broadcast
- Start the encoder on the Pi and confirm that it is sending video and audio to the intended YouTube stream.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, stream health, and that the loop advances and restarts as expected.
- When the preview is healthy, click Go live in Studio if the stream was set up for manual start. Follow the controls shown for the selected stream.
- To end the broadcast, stop the encoder’s content and end the stream in Studio as applicable. Confirm the live session has actually ended in Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a session lasting 12 hours or longer; check YouTube’s current guidance and save an independent copy if the recording matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and monetization are separate questions
Having permission to transmit a video does not automatically make a channel or stream eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says repetitive material with minimal variation or value may be ineligible. A continuously repeated retail loop can therefore create monetization risk, depending on its content and the channel’s circumstances. The policy does not say that every prerecorded video is categorically prohibited from being sent through a live encoder. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies separately from the rights needed to stream.

Even for an eligible monetized live stream, ads are not guaranteed. YouTube says its ad systems decide whether individual ad slots serve based on several factors. See YouTube’s guidance on ads during live streams.
Troubleshoot common failures
No live option or the stream cannot start
- Possible cause: The channel is not verified, has a restriction in the preceding 90 days, or has not completed first-time live-stream activation.
- Fix: Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and setup in Studio. If streaming was just enabled for the first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Possible cause: The server URL or stream key is wrong, belongs to a different stream, or was copied with extra characters; the network may also block the connection.
- Fix: Re-copy the values from the selected stream in Live Control Room, verify the encoder destination and network access, and confirm RTMPS support if using an RTMPS URL. Reset an exposed key rather than continuing to use it.
The preview is blank, silent, or unstable
- Possible cause: The encoder cannot decode or encode the chosen media, settings do not match the ingest guidance, bitrate exceeds dependable upload capacity, or the source file has an audio/video issue.
- Fix: Test the file locally, use a simpler supported codec/settings combination, lower the stream quality to fit reliable upload capacity, and check Studio’s stream-health information. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
The stream stops or is interrupted after going live
- Possible cause: The connection or encoder process failed, or YouTube detected third-party content. A license alone may not prevent Content ID interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
- Fix: Check Live Control Room notifications and stream health, inspect the Pi/network process, and resolve rights or allowlisting with the rights owner if a match is involved.
The broadcast works but monetization is limited
- Possible cause: Repetitive content with minimal variation or value may not meet YouTube’s monetization expectations, or ads may not serve in each slot.
- Fix: Review the channel monetization policy and the stream’s actual content; do not treat the ability to transmit a loop as confirmation of monetization eligibility or guaranteed ad delivery.
