Use a power bank’s built-in cable only in the ways its own manual specifies: some cables charge devices, some recharge the bank, and some do both. Check the connector and published ratings before connecting, monitor for abnormal heat or damage, and check the rules for your airline and route before flying.

Check what the built-in cable does on your model

Do not assume an integrated cable is bidirectional. The manufacturer’s manual should identify whether it is an output for charging devices, an input for recharging the power bank, or both. Check the same information for any separate ports, too.

For example, Anker’s Power Bank (30W, Fusion, Built-In USB-C Cable), model A1636, can charge devices through its built-in USB-C cable or its USB-C port. Its guide lists three ways to recharge the bank: a wall outlet, the USB-C port, or the built-in cable. These are A1636-specific instructions, not a rule for other integrated-cable models. The guide lists a 5,000 mAh cell capacity.

Charge a device with the built-in cable

  1. Check the connector. Confirm that it fits your device. A USB-C cable, for example, will not directly connect to a device that requires a different plug.
  2. Check the bank’s output specifications. Use the manual or product specifications to confirm that the cable and output support your device. A built-in cable alone does not establish charging speed or compatibility.
  3. Connect the device and check the indicator. Follow the model’s instructions for reading its lights or screen so you can tell whether charging has started.
  4. Stop if something seems wrong. Do not continue using the bank if it is damaged or behaving abnormally, particularly if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smokes, or burns.

Recharge the power bank

Use only an input method listed for your model. Some banks recharge through a separate port, an integrated cable, or both. For the A1636, Anker’s guide lists a wall outlet, the USB-C port, and the built-in cable as recharge methods. Do not infer that another power bank accepts input through its cable.

Troubleshoot without guessing

Start with the troubleshooting instructions for the exact model. Anker’s built-in-cable support article suggests trying another device if the cable will not charge one. If the bank itself will not recharge, it suggests trying another charger or outlet. Its reset procedure applies to the products covered by that support guidance; it is not a universal power-bank reset.

If the problem persists, stop using the bank and contact its manufacturer. The FAA identifies battery damage and overheating among conditions that can contribute to thermal runaway, in which a lithium-ion battery overheats. Its guidance also identifies water exposure, overcharging, improper packing, and manufacturing defects as possible causes. If a battery or device overheats, expands, smokes, or burns during a flight, notify the crew immediately.

Check the rules before flying

Air-travel requirements depend on the jurisdiction, airline, and route. For U.S. passenger flights, FAA guidance says power banks are spare lithium-ion batteries and must be carried in cabin baggage, not checked baggage. Its limits are:

Battery rating FAA guidance for U.S. passenger flights
0–100 Wh Allowed in carry-on baggage
101–160 Wh Requires air-carrier approval
Over 160 Wh Not allowed

The FAA page, updated 10 August 2026, notes that airlines may set stricter limits. See the FAA passenger battery guidance and check with your carrier before travel.

What to compare when choosing a model

  • Connector compatibility: Match the built-in cable to the device you intend to charge.
  • Input and output paths: Check which ports and cables charge devices and which recharge the bank.
  • Published specifications: Compare stated capacity and output ratings. Capacity alone does not promise a particular number of device charges.
  • Condition and safety information: Check the physical condition and any applicable recall notices.
  • Travel requirements: Check the battery rating against rules for your airline, departure point, and destination.

The cited product guide and safety guidance do not establish that a built-in-cable power bank is safer than one used with a separate cable. Compare documented specifications and verified safety information rather than assuming the integrated design is safer or faster.
