To loop multiple videos through OBS on YouTube Live, install VLC, add a VLC Video Source to an OBS scene, add the media items to its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. OBS’s documented workflow is to add playlist items within the source; its guidance does not explain importing an existing .m3u or similar playlist file directly.
What OBS can do with a playlist file
OBS documents a playlist workflow using its VLC Video Source: you add media items to the source’s playlist, then configure playback. The official OBS pages reviewed do not provide instructions or supported extensions for loading an existing .m3u, .pls, or other playlist document directly. If you have one of those files, use OBS’s documented add-items workflow rather than assuming the file itself can be imported.
For a single video file, OBS’s built-in Media Source can loop that file. For several clips, VLC Video Source provides a playlist with loop and shuffle controls. OBS describes VLC Video Source as similar to Media Source but with playlist functionality. (OBS Project: Media Sources; OBS Project: Sources Guide)
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video Source to appear. Match the application bitness: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing after installation, check that the VLC and OBS versions have matching bitness. (OBS Project: Media Sources)
- Open the scene and add the source. In OBS, select the scene that will carry the video. In the Sources panel, use the add control and choose VLC Video Source. Add the video files to the source’s playlist. Use this source for multiple items; use Media Source when you only need one local file.
- Set playlist order and looping. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart playback after the final item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if clips should play in the order listed; turn it on only if randomized order is wanted. The VLC Video Source documentation lists a 400 ms network-caching default. That is a source setting, not a guarantee that playback will never pause or fail.
- Choose what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents the default behavior as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If you switch scenes and the source becomes hidden, it may stop and restart under that behavior. Set the visibility behavior to suit your scene design, then test scene changes before broadcasting. This setting controls playback while the source is not visible; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
- Check the scene in the preview. Confirm the video is visible in the intended layout and that playback and audio are correct. If the playlist contains clips with different sizes or audio levels, review each item in the scene before the event.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to use live streaming. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio if streaming is unavailable. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming)
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and prepare the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS streaming settings, choose the YouTube service or a custom server as appropriate, and enter the URL and key from Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or show it in a screenshot.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Review the incoming picture and sound in the preview before starting the public broadcast. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)
- End the event cleanly. Stop the live event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS when finished. Verify the event has ended in Live Control Room.
Test the stream and protect playback continuity
Test before the event rather than discovering a scene, media, or connection problem during the broadcast. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring audio and video. It also recommends upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom; this is YouTube’s published guidance, not a guarantee against every network interruption. - Switch away from and back to the scene to verify the chosen hidden-source behavior.
- Listen for audio and check the Live Control Room preview, not just the local OBS preview.
- Make sure the available upload capacity exceeds the stream’s total bitrate with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Keep the computer and network connection available during an OBS-based broadcast; OBS sends the encoder stream from your machine.
Troubleshooting common playlist-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is not available | VLC is not installed, or its bitness does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then check the Sources add menu again. (OBS Project: Media Sources) |
| The playlist stops after the last clip | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Clips play in an unexpected order | Shuffle Playlist is enabled. | Disable shuffle for listed order; keep it on only when randomized order is intended. |
| Playback stops when changing scenes | The source is hidden and its visibility behavior stops playback while not visible. | Review the source’s visibility behavior and test the scene transition before going live. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The encoder may have the wrong server URL or stream key, or the channel may not be eligible to stream. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, re-enter them in OBS, and check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. Never share the stream key. |
| The preview buffers or the stream is unstable | The connection may not have enough upload capacity for the total stream bitrate and recommended headroom. | Check the available upload capacity and compare it with the stream bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. Test the connection before the event. (YouTube Help: Streaming tips) |
