Yes, you can connect a USB keyboard and mouse to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. The console provides platform-level support for USB peripherals, but a game must add its own mouse-and-keyboard controls before they will work in gameplay. Support is therefore decided title by title, not guaranteed for every Xbox game.

For the most reliable setup, use a wired USB keyboard and mouse or a wireless set with a compatible USB receiver. Connect both to the console, launch the game, and look under its Controls, Input, or Mouse and Keyboard settings. When choosing a game, use the Microsoft Store’s Console Keyboard & Mouse capability filter, then confirm the title’s current documentation or in-game settings.

What Xbox keyboard-and-mouse support actually means

Xbox recognizes compatible USB keyboards and mice at the platform level. That does not automatically make those devices usable in every game. The game developer has to implement the input method, expose the controls, and decide which functions are available.

Jason Ronald, Xbox’s Director of Program Management, described the policy in an Xbox Wire update published on 25 September 2018: "It’s important to note that mouse and keyboard support for games is added on a title-by-title basis, entirely at developers’ discretion." That remains the practical rule when deciding whether a particular game will work.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A keyboard may work in one title and appear to do nothing in another without either device being defective. The difference is usually the second game’s input implementation, not the console hardware.

What you need before connecting anything

A USB keyboard and mouse

The official Xbox material covers wired USB peripherals and wireless devices that use a USB receiver. A standard wired keyboard-and-mouse set is the simplest choice because each device connects directly to the console and has no battery or pairing step.

  • One USB keyboard.
  • One USB mouse.
  • Two available USB ports, unless your particular set combines through one receiver or hub that the console accepts.
  • A game or app that has implemented keyboard-and-mouse input.

Official guidance does not establish that a Bluetooth-only keyboard or mouse can connect directly to Xbox. If a wireless model has no USB receiver, verify Xbox compatibility from its current product documentation before buying it.

Enough room and a suitable surface

Place the console where both USB cables can reach without tension. A mouse needs a stable, level surface; an optical mouse can behave unpredictably on glass or highly reflective material. These are physical setup considerations rather than Xbox compatibility requirements, but they prevent you from mistaking poor tracking for an input-support problem.

How to connect a wired keyboard and mouse

  1. Turn on the Xbox. You can connect the devices before or after startup, but beginning with the console on makes it easier to see whether the game reacts immediately.
  2. Insert the keyboard’s USB plug into an available USB port on the console.
  3. Insert the mouse’s USB plug into another available port. Push each connector fully into place; a partially seated plug can supply unreliable input.
  4. Launch the target game or app. Xbox-level recognition does not mean the title will automatically switch away from controller input.
  5. Open the title’s settings. Look for Controls, Input, Keyboard and Mouse, or Mouse and Keyboard. The exact label and location are chosen by the developer.
  6. Enable or select keyboard-and-mouse input if the title offers a switch. Some games expose separate keyboard and mouse pages; others show the option only when the devices are detected.
  7. Test a non-critical action. Move the mouse, press a key, and check whether the game displays the corresponding input. Configure bindings and sensitivity before starting a competitive or lengthy session.

If the title has no keyboard-and-mouse section and no key responds, do not assume the console failed. First verify that the game supports the capability; the platform cannot add controls that the title does not provide.

How to connect a wireless set that uses a USB receiver

  1. Install or charge the batteries and switch on the keyboard and mouse according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Plug the set’s USB receiver into an available Xbox USB port. The receiver, not the wireless radio by itself, is the connection the cited Xbox guidance addresses.
  3. Wait briefly for the devices to connect. Keep the receiver connected while testing; removing it leaves the console with no input path.
  4. Open the supported game and check its input settings as you would with wired devices.
  5. If nothing responds, confirm the receiver is the model supplied for that set. A receiver from a different product line may not pair with the keyboard or mouse.

Wireless does not change the title-support rule. A compatible receiver can make the hardware available to Xbox, but the game still has to accept mouse-and-keyboard input.

How to find games that support keyboard and mouse

Use the Microsoft Store capability filter

  1. Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox.
  2. Search for the game you are considering, or browse the relevant game category.
  3. Open the game’s store listing.
  4. Check the capabilities area for Console Keyboard & Mouse.
  5. Use that label as a discovery aid, then check the game’s own documentation or its in-game Controls/Input menu for the current details.

The Store label is useful because it identifies titles that advertise the capability for console. It is not a promise that every keyboard key, every mouse feature, or every game mode will behave exactly like the PC version. The title’s current settings remain the authoritative place to see what can be remapped.

Treat old compatibility lists as examples, not guarantees

An Xbox Wire announcement from November 2018 named Fortnite and Warframe among early supported titles and listed additional games. That announcement is a historical snapshot, not a permanent, exhaustive catalog. Games can add, change, or remove input behavior through later releases, and a title’s current Store listing and settings are more useful than an old list.

What you can configure inside a supported game

Configuration is title-specific. A supported game may offer some or all of the following:

  • Individual key bindings for movement, actions, menus, or communication.
  • Separate keyboard and mouse control pages.
  • Mouse sensitivity controls.
  • Different horizontal and vertical sensitivity values.
  • Toggle or hold behavior for actions such as crouching or aiming.
  • On-screen prompts that switch between controller and keyboard symbols.

Those options are not guaranteed by Xbox itself. The developer decides whether they exist, what they are called, and whether a setting applies to the whole game or only a particular mode. If you cannot find a sensitivity slider or a key-remapping page, that may be a limitation of the title rather than a hardware fault.

Wired USB versus wireless USB receiver

Factor Wired USB Wireless with USB receiver
Connection Keyboard and mouse plug directly into Xbox USB ports. A receiver plugs into Xbox; the keyboard and mouse connect to that receiver.
Power No keyboard or mouse batteries are required. Requires charged or replaceable batteries, depending on the set.
Setup complexity Connect the plugs and open a supported title. Connect the receiver, switch on both devices, then open a supported title.
Xbox compatibility Official Xbox guidance says most wired USB keyboards and mice work on Xbox One; Series X|S use the same title-by-title support principle. Compatibility depends on the set and its USB receiver. Verify the model’s Xbox support before purchase.
Bluetooth-only devices Not applicable. Not established by the cited Xbox material; do not assume direct Bluetooth support.
Game support Identical rule: the individual game must implement keyboard-and-mouse input.
Remapping and sensitivity Available only when the game exposes those settings.
USB-port requirement Use available console ports; the official material does not state a universal port count for every Xbox model. At least one available port is needed for the receiver.

Troubleshooting: when the keyboard or mouse does not work

Neither device responds in the game

  1. Unplug both USB connections and reconnect them firmly.
  2. Try a different USB port on the console.
  3. For a wireless set, remove and reconnect the receiver, then confirm both devices are switched on and have power.
  4. Open the game’s Controls or Input settings and look for a keyboard-and-mouse option.
  5. Check the Microsoft Store listing for the Console Keyboard & Mouse capability.
  6. Install available console and game updates, then test again. Updates can change input behavior, but no particular update should be assumed to fix a particular device.

If the title has no capability label and no input settings, title support is the first issue to investigate before replacing otherwise functional hardware.

The keyboard works in one game but not another

This pattern is the clearest sign of title-specific support. Xbox Wire states that developers decide whether and how a game accepts mouse and keyboard input. Test the second game’s current Store listing and settings rather than using the first game’s behavior as proof that every title should work.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The mouse works but the keyboard does not, or vice versa

Check that both plugs are fully seated and that the wireless receiver is connected if you use a wireless set. Then look for separate device toggles or binding pages in the game. A title can implement one device differently from the other, so partial operation does not by itself prove a defective peripheral.

A wireless device cannot connect

Confirm that it uses a USB receiver and that the receiver belongs to the keyboard-and-mouse set. The official material does not establish direct Bluetooth-only console input, so a Bluetooth pairing procedure on another device is not evidence that the same model will pair with Xbox.

You cannot find the Store capability label

Search the exact Xbox version of the game and inspect its capabilities section. If the label is absent, check the developer’s current documentation or the game’s own settings. Do not rely solely on an old list of supported games, because the 2018 announcement was a historical snapshot.

Practical decision guide

Choose a wired set when reliability and simplicity matter most

A wired USB set minimizes variables: there is no receiver to misplace, no wireless battery to charge, and no pairing procedure. It is the straightforward choice for a desk-based Xbox setup or for diagnosing whether a game supports the input method at all.

Choose a wireless receiver set when cable management matters

A wireless set can reduce cable clutter, but it adds a receiver and power requirements. Confirm the receiver is included and that the model explicitly supports Xbox before purchase. The wireless connection cannot make an unsupported game accept mouse input.

Check the game before buying peripherals for one title

If keyboard-and-mouse play is the reason for your purchase, identify the exact game first. Use the Microsoft Store capability filter, then verify the title’s own control documentation. This avoids buying hardware for a game that accepts only a controller.

Keeping the setup working over time

  • Leave the receiver in a known USB port when using a wireless set so it is not confused with an unsupported Bluetooth-only connection.
  • Keep the keyboard and mouse firmware or companion configuration current when the manufacturer provides an Xbox-compatible process; do not assume PC-only utilities run on the console.
  • Recheck the game’s Controls or Input menu after a major game update.
  • If behavior changes after an update, compare the current Store capability label and the developer’s current support notes before changing hardware.
  • When lending or replacing a peripheral, test it in a title already known to support keyboard and mouse, then test the new game separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a mouse and keyboard on both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One?

Yes, USB keyboard-and-mouse peripherals are supported at the Xbox platform level. Actual use depends on whether each game has implemented the feature.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all Xbox games support keyboard and mouse?

No. Support is added on a title-by-title basis at the developer’s discretion.

Will any wireless keyboard and mouse work?

Use a set with a compatible USB receiver and verify Xbox compatibility for the specific model. Direct Bluetooth-only support is not established by the cited official guidance.

Why does a keyboard work in one game but not another?

Each title controls its own input handling. One game may support keyboard and mouse while another does not, even on the same console with the same hardware.
