You can use a mini PC to play a prerecorded story video through encoder software such as OBS and send it to YouTube Live. The mini PC runs the encoder; YouTube receives the stream. The basic workflow is to enable live streaming, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in your encoder, test the connection, and monitor stream health. A mini PC setup does not, by itself, guarantee unattended operation or a continuous archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not promise an archive or seamless rollover for a 24/7 broadcast.
What a mini PC can—and cannot—do for 24/7 streaming
A mini PC is the local computer running playback and encoder software. YouTube lists OBS, an open-source encoder, among its software options. In this setup, the mini PC sends a live video feed to YouTube rather than uploading a video as a normal on-demand post.
“24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee supplied by the hardware or YouTube. The available YouTube guidance does not set a minimum mini PC specification, establish that a particular model can run continuously without intervention, or explain how to roll over a stream without interruption. You will need to validate the chosen computer, operating system, encoder, content, and restart plan for your own setup.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube Help states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Do not assume that a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more will be archived, or that stopping and restarting it will preserve uninterrupted playback. If you need a replay or a truly continuous public feed, verify YouTube’s current behavior and test your planned stream schedule before relying on it.

Prepare the channel, story video, and mini PC
Enable live streaming and allow for activation
Enable live streaming on the YouTube account you will use. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the intended launch.
Check content rights and platform rules
Only stream stories, music, images, and other material you have the rights to use or permission to broadcast. A looped or prerecorded presentation is not a substitute for rights clearance or compliance with YouTube policies. The requirements depend on the content and rights involved; check the applicable terms before building a long-running playlist.

Choose and validate the computer for your settings
There is no supported minimum CPU, GPU, or memory specification in the cited YouTube guidance. Requirements depend on the resolution, frame rate, codec, playback method, and encoder settings you choose. Check the manufacturer and operating-system guidance for your specific mini PC, then test it at the intended quality for an extended period. Confirm that sleep settings, updates or restarts, encoder startup, crash recovery, and cooling behavior suit unattended operation; these are device- and OS-specific checks, not guarantees of continuous service.
A stable upload connection is essential. YouTube advises testing the upload bitrate and selecting quality that the connection can reliably sustain. Wired Ethernet can be an option, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not require it.

Create a YouTube Live stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio: select Create → Go Live. In the Stream tab, create a stream, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling can provide a shareable URL and viewer reminders.
- Find the stream URL and key: get both in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure OBS or another encoder: if the software offers YouTube as a service, select it and enter the key. Otherwise, set the stream URL as the server and paste the key into the stream-key field. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.
- Set video and audio: select resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio format based on the content and connection. Use the guidance below as a starting point, then test.
- Start a private test: send representative story footage with audio and movement. In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream health, and address any warnings before a public launch.
- Go live: start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when prompted.
Choose encoder settings that fit the connection
YouTube’s 2026 encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. Use a supported codec and confirm the settings in your encoder.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that your mini PC or internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the incoming feed into outputs for viewers on different devices and networks. Test the upload connection at the bitrate you plan to send, and lower quality if it is not reliable.

Test, monitor, and handle planned stops
Run a representative test
- Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio format.
- Play a representative section with the same kind of motion and sound as the story stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health notices before inviting viewers.
- Observe the mini PC and encoder over a meaningful period to catch local playback, overheating, or restart problems. A brief test cannot establish long-term reliability.
End or restart a stream deliberately
For a planned ending or restart, stop sending from the encoder and end the stream through YouTube’s workflow. A restart creates a break in the live feed; do not promise viewers uninterrupted playback during it. Since the automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, verify current YouTube behavior for longer transmissions and any archive needs before choosing a schedule.
