The exact label depends on your browser and operating system. Google documents Ctrl+P and Command+P for Chrome, Mozilla documents the same pattern for Firefox, and Microsoft documents it for Edge.
The shortcut and destination for each browser
The shortcut opens the print workflow; it does not create a PDF until you select a PDF destination and complete the save action. Use this as the quick reference:

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau summarizes the result this way: “Your web browser can likely ‘print’ the page to a PDF.” Its instructions for Windows and Mac also explain where to choose a filename and location.
How to save a webpage as a PDF
- Open the page. Load the webpage you want to keep. If it requires a sign-in, authenticate before opening the print workflow.
- Open print. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS.
- Choose the PDF destination. In Chrome, select the destination shown in the print window. In Firefox, select Save to PDF. Windows may expose Microsoft Print to PDF or Save as PDF; macOS normally puts Save as PDF in the PDF menu.
- Set the page range and layout. Check the pages, orientation, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background graphics that your browser exposes.
- Inspect the preview. Look for clipped columns, blank pages, missing colors, advertisements, navigation, or an unexpected page break.
- Save the file. Select Save or Print, choose a filename and folder when prompted, and open the resulting PDF to verify it.
Fix the layout before saving
When text or columns are clipped
Reduce the scale, change between portrait and landscape, or increase the margins. A wide table or dashboard often fits better in landscape mode. Use a narrower page range if only one section is needed. Firefox documents controls for orientation, page selection, color, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers and footers, and backgrounds.

When colors or images are missing
Enable Background graphics or the equivalent option in the preview. Edge documents this setting and its other print controls in Print in Microsoft Edge. Backgrounds can restore the visual appearance of a page, although they may use more ink if you later print the PDF on paper.
When the page contains menus and surrounding clutter
Firefox may offer Simplified format, depending on the site. Edge’s Immersive Reader can sometimes reduce surrounding content, but Microsoft notes that it is not available on every website. You can also select specific content in Edge and print the selection when that option appears.
When the preview differs from the screen
Web pages can use print-specific styles, so a PDF may not look identical to the live page. Interactive controls, animations, continuously updating data, and some paywalled or dynamically loaded sections are not guaranteed to reproduce completely. The preview is the authoritative check before you save.
Browser-specific details and fallbacks
Chrome
Chrome opens a print window where you select a destination and adjust settings. If Windows does not list a system PDF printer, Chrome’s own Save as PDF destination can still provide the browser-based route described in Chrome Help.

- Things to Note 1: The HOME and END keys are now on the number pad—make sure the number pad is unlocked to use them. Press FN + M to switch to Mac mode so the Alt key works as Command for shortcuts (Command+C, Command+V, etc.)
Firefox
Firefox separates printing from saving the page source. Use Ctrl+P or Command+P, then select Save to PDF in Destination. Mozilla’s shortcut table lists Ctrl+S and Command+S as Save Page As; those shortcuts should not be treated as a PDF command.
Edge
Edge’s print panel includes page range, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics. If you need only a passage, select it first and use the option to print the selection when Edge offers it.
Operating-system dialogs
On Windows, the available wording depends on the installed print route. The CFPB notes that older Windows versions may not include Microsoft Print to PDF, while Chrome can provide its own PDF destination. On a Mac, choose Save as PDF from the print dialog’s PDF menu.
Troubleshooting shortcut-to-PDF problems
Nothing happens when you press the shortcut
- Click the browser window first, then press the shortcut again; another application may have focus.
- Use the browser’s File menu and choose Print to confirm that the page and browser can open the workflow.
- On compact keyboards, make sure the modifier key is being sent correctly; an on-screen keyboard can help identify a hardware issue.
There is no “Save as PDF” option
Look for a destination drop-down rather than a button with that exact wording. Firefox calls it Save to PDF; Windows may call it Microsoft Print to PDF. In Chrome, select the destination menu and look for Chrome’s PDF option. If a Windows installation lacks the system printer, the CFPB’s guidance points to Chrome’s built-in alternative.

The saved PDF has blank pages or a broken layout
Return to the preview, change scale or orientation, and inspect the page range. Large pages designed for screen viewing can trigger awkward page breaks. If a page loads content only after scrolling or interaction, wait for it to finish loading before opening print; even then, a complete reproduction is not guaranteed.
Headers, footers, or URLs are unwanted
Turn off the corresponding headers-and-footers option when the browser exposes it. Review every page in the preview because browser defaults differ.
The PDF is missing a background
Enable background graphics, then preview again. If the option is unavailable, the page’s print stylesheet may intentionally suppress backgrounds.
You used Ctrl+S or Command+S in Firefox
That command is Firefox’s Save Page As function. It can save page files and assets, but Mozilla does not define it as the print-to-PDF shortcut. Use Ctrl+P or Command+P and select Save to PDF.

For a one-off document, the keyboard workflow is usually simplest. For scheduled captures, authenticated pages, or many URLs, an API can remove the need to keep a browser window configured.
