You can use a Hetzner Cloud snapshot to create a replacement server, but it is a disk image—not a seamless live migration. For the most consistent snapshot, Hetzner recommends powering off the source first. Snapshots exclude attached Volumes, and a replacement must use a compatible CPU architecture. Build and validate the new server before switching the YouTube encoder, and keep a local recording and rollback option because neither Hetzner nor YouTube guarantees an uninterrupted handoff.

What a Hetzner snapshot does—and what it does not

A snapshot captures the server disk at a point in time and can be used to create a new Cloud server, including in another location. It does not include attached Hetzner Volumes, and any changes made after the snapshot are not present in the new image. Hetzner also says the replacement server must have an architecture compatible with the snapshot. See Hetzner’s backup and snapshot overview and its server FAQ.

This is therefore a migration by staging a second server and switching the stream—not moving the existing server in place. Hetzner says a server’s location cannot be changed in place. A snapshot does not prove that custom software, mounts, networking, or a YouTube live event will continue exactly as before; test the image and plan the encoder handoff.

Plan the migration before taking the snapshot

Inventory the source server

  • Record the server architecture, server type, location, public and private networking, and firewall rules.
  • List every attached Volume, its contents, mount point, and how the replacement will access or receive that data. Volumes are not part of the snapshot.
  • Document the streaming process, service configuration, environment variables, scheduled jobs, and restart behavior.
  • Determine how the encoder receives the YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key as a secret: do not put it in a public script, article, or logs.
  • Set aside a local recording plan. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a 24/7 feed should not rely on YouTube as its only recording.

Choose a consistency approach

For the disk consistency Hetzner recommends, arrange a controlled stop, create the snapshot while the source is powered off, then restart it if you need to minimize the time the stream is down. This does interrupt the source feed while it is stopped. Hetzner allows snapshots of running servers, but explicitly does not guarantee consistency for them. If stopping is unacceptable, consider whether your application can quiesce writes or whether you can independently back up changing data; a live snapshot alone is not a consistency guarantee. The trade-off is described in Hetzner’s snapshot FAQ.

Create and prepare the replacement server

  1. Take the snapshot. Use Hetzner Cloud Console to select the source server and create a snapshot. For Hetzner’s recommended consistency approach, power off the source before creating it. Record which snapshot you intend to use so you do not accidentally build from an older image.
  2. Create a new server from that snapshot. Choose the target location and a server architecture compatible with the snapshot. Select a server type that can support the workload, and configure the needed network resources and firewall rules. You are creating a replacement, not changing the original server’s location in place.
  3. Handle Volumes separately. Create, attach, or otherwise restore the data on any required Volumes, then confirm the expected filesystems are mounted at the paths used by the streaming software. Do not assume the snapshot carried this data.
  4. Check the new host before starting production. Confirm it boots, accepts administrator access, starts the expected services, and can reach the required outbound services. Verify stream software configuration, file permissions, mounts, and firewall behavior. A snapshot may preserve old configuration, but it does not guarantee that every custom installation will adapt correctly to the new server.
  5. Keep the production feed controlled during testing. Where possible, use a test stream or a controlled event to validate the encoder and network without creating an unintended duplicate production feed.

Validate YouTube settings and stream health

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the intended live event and its stream settings. The encoder needs the correct stream URL and stream key; YouTube’s guidance for connecting an encoder is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings. If the key needs updating or rotating, do so through Live Control Room and update the replacement encoder securely. Do not assume a snapshot’s saved key is still the intended key.

  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before treating the replacement as ready.
  • Verify watch-page access and confirm the audience can reach the intended stream.
  • Make a short local recording and check its audio and video, rather than relying only on the outgoing preview.
  • For a 24/7 feed, monitor local recording and rotate or otherwise manage recordings; YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived. See Archive live streams.
  • Remember that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams.
  • If using primary and backup encoders, test failover deliberately. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary or disconnecting its network path and confirming playback rolls over. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Check the target server’s actual network path and egress capacity rather than inferring suitability from the snapshot. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate of primary plus backup encoders; a network disruption can break a stream. Its guidance is in Streaming tips. If you use RTMPS, confirm the encoder is configured for the intended secure ingest connection; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Cut over, observe, and retain rollback

  1. Choose a cutover point and confirm that only the intended encoder will send the production feed. If both hosts use the same event or key, avoid starting both blindly; duplicate feeds or concurrent writes can complicate the handoff.
  2. Start or redirect the encoder process on the replacement, updating the endpoint or other configuration only as the actual topology requires.
  3. Watch the Live Control Room preview and health indicators, then check the public watch page, audio/video quality, and whether the local recording is growing as expected.
  4. Keep the old server and its data available until the replacement is confirmed. Decide explicitly when to stop the old process so it cannot continue sending a competing feed.
  5. Do not promise viewers a seamless transition: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains connection, not guaranteed continuity through a host migration. The actual interruption and reconnection behavior depends on the event, encoder workflow, and account configuration.

Troubleshooting common migration failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Replacement boots but streaming data or media files are missing The needed data was on an attached Volume, which is not included in a snapshot. Attach or restore the Volume separately, mount it at the expected path, and check permissions before starting the stream service.
Replacement does not boot or behaves differently Architecture mismatch, stale configuration, or custom setup that did not adapt to the new host. Confirm architecture compatibility, inspect boot and service logs, and validate the actual image and configuration rather than assuming snapshot creation guarantees a working replacement.
YouTube receives no feed The encoder is not running, has the wrong stream URL or key, or cannot reach YouTube from the replacement host. Check the encoder process and its private configuration, verify the event’s URL and key in Live Control Room, and test outbound connectivity and firewall rules.
Feed connects but quality is unstable or drops The target route or egress may be inadequate or disrupted. Check stream health and the replacement’s actual network path; compare available bandwidth with the combined primary and backup bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
Viewers see a gap or unexpected event behavior at cutover The migration did not guarantee continuity for the existing YouTube event, or both encoders were not coordinated. Check the Live Control Room state, stop any unintended duplicate encoder, and use the planned rollback or controlled restart. Do not assume a snapshot preserves the event session.
No complete YouTube archive appears for a continuous stream The feed exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Use an independent local recording and verify the recording files during operation rather than relying on YouTube to store the full 24/7 stream.
