To use a compatible GoPro as a YouTube webcam, connect it to your computer by USB-C, complete GoPro’s webcam setup for your camera and operating system, then select it in YouTube Studio’s webcam livestream flow. You do not need a capture card for this basic USB setup. Before you start, check your exact GoPro model and computer support; GoPro’s HERO10 manual documents the USB-C method, while the available GoPro Webcam app listing covers macOS only.
Check YouTube and device compatibility first
Confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. The account holder must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and enable live streaming on the channel before scheduling or starting an event.
Check your GoPro model and operating system
GoPro’s HERO10 Black manual describes webcam mode and a connection over the included USB-C cable. GoPro’s Mac App Store listing names HERO8 Black and newer as supported, including HERO12, HERO11, HERO10, HERO9 and HERO8 Black, but excludes HERO11 Mini and MAX. That is information for the macOS app listing, not a guarantee of support on Windows or every other platform. Check GoPro’s current setup instructions and software requirements for your exact model and computer before installing anything.
The HERO10 manual says the camera and computer must both be set up for webcam mode before going live, and points users to the HERO10 Black User Manual. The manual also describes a separate process for starting a GoPro livestream in the Quik app; that is not the same as using the camera as a webcam selected by a computer browser.

Set up GoPro webcam mode
- Install or configure GoPro’s webcam software for your system. Follow GoPro’s current instructions for your model and operating system. The HERO10 manual says the camera is in webcam mode by default, but both devices still need to be configured before a stream.
- Connect the camera to the computer with USB-C. The HERO10 manual specifies the included USB-C cable. If that cable is missing or faulty, use a suitable replacement data cable; a replacement is not an additional required purchase when the included cable works.
- Position and power the camera. Frame the shot, check focus and exposure, and ensure the camera can remain powered for the planned session. A mount, power solution or external microphone may be useful depending on your setup, but none is established as a prerequisite for the basic USB workflow.
Start the YouTube webcam livestream
- Sign in to the eligible YouTube channel in a supported browser. YouTube’s webcam help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ compatibility; check the current help page if your browser or version differs.
- In YouTube, select Create > Go Live > Webcam.
- Enter the stream title and description, and select the intended privacy setting.
- Use the camera selector to choose the GoPro webcam and the microphone selector to choose the intended audio source. Do not assume the GoPro is selected automatically, or that its built-in microphone is the one you want.
- Review the preview and audio, then select Go Live when ready. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are at Create a live stream via webcam.
Rehearse and check the stream
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the audio and video. Its guidance is to leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. A private or unlisted rehearsal can help you check the framing, exposure, selected microphone, and YouTube preview without presenting an unfinished setup as the intended public event. - Confirm the preview shows the GoPro rather than a built-in laptop camera.
- Speak or make a test sound and confirm the selected microphone is producing audio.
- Check that the camera remains connected and framed as intended.
- Make sure the connection has the recommended bandwidth headroom for the stream bitrate.
- Verify the privacy setting before starting the event.
USB webcam mode or an encoder?

A capture device is not inherently required for the basic USB webcam method. An encoder workflow is a different, more involved setup; do not assume HDMI accessories are compatible with every GoPro model or that HDMI is necessary for a better image.

Troubleshoot common problems
The GoPro does not appear as a camera
- Recheck that the exact model and operating system are supported by GoPro’s current webcam setup.
- Confirm GoPro webcam software or configuration is complete on the computer and the camera is connected over USB-C.
- If the included cable is damaged or unreliable, try a suitable replacement data cable rather than assuming every USB-C cable will carry data.
- Close and reopen the browser’s webcam flow, then check the camera selector again.
YouTube shows the wrong camera or microphone
Open the camera and microphone selectors in the webcam flow and choose the intended devices explicitly. Recheck the preview and audio before going live; a working camera selection does not confirm that the desired microphone is selected.
The stream preview or playback is unstable
Run another rehearsal and check the camera connection and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends retaining 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. If you are using an encoder or external hardware, check its signal and audio routing separately; those components are not part of the basic USB webcam path.

You cannot start a livestream
Check that the channel is verified, that live streaming is enabled, and that there are no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires the account holder to be at least 16.
