Put laundry on an airer in one room and run a dehumidifier there according to its manual. As clothes dry, moisture enters the room air; the dehumidifier can remove some of it, helping manage indoor humidity. Dry outdoors when practical, and do not drape clothes over radiators.
How do I use a dehumidifier to dry clothes indoors?
- Remove as much water as practical first. If your washing machine offers a second spin, use it to reduce water left in the fabric, as Oxford City Council advises in its household guidance.
- Set up an airer in one room. Keep garments separated enough for air to move between them; no universal spacing or dehumidifier-to-airer distance has been established. Containing laundry drying in one room is recommended by Oxford City Council and Test Valley Borough Council.
- Position and operate the unit as its manual directs. Use its humidity control or humidistat if available. The Centre for Sustainable Energy’s November 2023 advice, reproduced in a Barrow Borough Council leaflet, suggests setting the unit below 60% relative humidity if possible and closing doors and windows in the room for efficiency. These are general household recommendations, not requirements for every model or room.
- Check the laundry and empty or drain the appliance as directed. Do not put clothes away until they are completely dry; Oxford City Council advises making sure laundry is dry before storing it.
Drying clothes indoors adds moisture to the air. The UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs’ Indoor Air Quality Report notes that a dehumidifier can help alleviate the moisture problem associated with indoor laundry.
Should I shut the windows when drying laundry with a dehumidifier?
There is no single window rule for every home or appliance. The Centre for Sustainable Energy leaflet cited above recommends closing doors and windows in the room to help the dehumidifier work efficiently. Oxford City Council, by contrast, recommends drying laundry in a bathroom with the door closed and a window open in its guidance. Follow your dehumidifier’s manual, and account for any extractor fan or ventilation system in the room rather than assuming one arrangement suits every setup.
Where should I put the dehumidifier when drying laundry?
Use the appliance in the same room as the airer, with the laundry drying contained there. Follow the manual’s placement and clearance instructions; available guidance does not establish one ideal location, a universal distance from the rack, or a fastest setting. Keep the room arrangement compatible with the unit’s airflow and any room ventilation.

How long does it take to dry clothes with a dehumidifier?
There is no reliable universal drying time. It depends on the load, fabric, how much water remains after the wash, room conditions, and the appliance. Check the garments themselves rather than using a humidity reading or a fixed number of hours as proof they are dry. A hygrometer can monitor room humidity, but it cannot tell whether fabric is dry.
How should I manage humidity and condensation?
Indoor laundry releases moisture as it dries, which can contribute to condensation on cold surfaces. Oxford City Council explains that condensation forms when moisture in warm air settles on cold surfaces such as windows or walls in its household guidance. A dehumidifier can help control moisture in the room, but it does not diagnose or repair leaks, penetrating damp, or building defects. Persistent damp or mould needs its cause assessed.

Humidity targets in household advice differ and are not garment-dryness thresholds. The Centre for Sustainable Energy leaflet suggests setting a dehumidifier below 60% relative humidity if possible; Test Valley Borough Council’s guidance, last updated 11 December 2025, advises aiming below 70%. Treat these as general household guidance, not a settled universal cutoff for health, mould prevention, or dry clothing.

What should I avoid, and what if indoor drying is not practical?
- Do not dry clothes on radiators. This can increase condensation risk; Oxford City Council and Test Valley Borough Council advise against it in their guidance.
- Prefer outdoor drying when practical. It avoids adding laundry moisture to indoor air, as noted in the Centre for Sustainable Energy advice reproduced by Barrow Borough Council.
- Do not rely on a dehumidifier to fix a damp building. It can remove moisture from room air, but persistent damp needs investigation.
