A cloud storage bucket can hold the videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but it cannot publish them to YouTube on its own. You need an encoder or media pipeline that can read the bucket’s objects, sequence and loop the videos, create a live feed, and send it to the YouTube ingestion address configured for your stream. This guide walks through that do-it-yourself architecture and its operational requirements.
How the bucket-to-YouTube workflow works
Think of the bucket as the source library, not the broadcaster. A separate process must fetch or access its video files and deliver a continuous live feed to YouTube.
- Store the media: Put the video files and any playlist or manifest data in the object bucket.
- Provide access: Run an encoder on a persistent machine or use an integration that can read the bucket’s objects. The connector, download method, or filesystem mount depends on the storage provider and deployment.
- Build the sequence: Arrange files in the desired order, loop them, and normalize incompatible media where necessary.
- Send the feed: Configure the encoder to use the ingestion address and stream name or key for your YouTube live stream.
- Monitor it: Supervise the process, record failures, check stream health, and arrange a recovery or restart path.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API illustrates the distinction between storage and delivery: it accepts RTMP or SRT input, transcodes that input to HLS or DASH, and can save output to Cloud Storage. Its documented workflow is not a mechanism for YouTube to pull and play a video directly from a bucket object. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
Choose an encoder or managed media pipeline
Self-managed encoder
With a self-managed encoder, you operate the machine, bucket access, playlist logic, encoding, YouTube connection, and recovery. FFmpeg can read regular files, pipes, and network streams, and its FAQ describes ways to concatenate media. However, the exact method for exposing a particular cloud bucket to FFmpeg is provider- and deployment-specific; the official FFmpeg documentation does not prescribe one universal connector or bucket-to-YouTube command.

Managed media pipeline
A managed pipeline can take responsibility for some media-processing infrastructure, but check its documented inputs and outputs before designing around it. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts a live RTMP or SRT input and produces HLS or DASH output; that is different from reading a bucket object and publishing it directly as a YouTube live stream. You still need a component that obtains and sequences the stored videos and supplies a compatible live input.

The Google Cloud HLS quickstart uses Cloud Storage for live-stream manifests and segments as an output destination in its workflow. It does not establish Cloud Storage as a YouTube live input.
Prepare bucket files and playlists
Make the objects available to the encoder
Choose how the encoder will read the files: for example, by downloading them to its local storage, reading them through a network interface, or mounting storage if your provider and setup support that. Confirm that the process has the necessary permissions, can reach the bucket reliably, and can access every object in the playlist. There is no provider-independent access setup established by the cited documentation.

Sequence and normalize media
Test the actual files together before putting them on air. Video files that differ in codecs, frame sizes, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts may not join cleanly without normalization. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and describes the concat demuxer for cases where re-encoding can be avoided. Select the approach based on the files’ compatibility, then validate transitions, audio, and loop behavior with your chosen library.
Configure YouTube ingestion
- Create or configure the YouTube live stream and select an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder.
- Copy the ingestion address and stream name or key supplied for that stream into the encoder’s configuration.
- Store the key in secret configuration rather than in a public playlist, script repository, or log. Anyone with access to a usable stream key may be able to send video to the stream.
- Start the encoder and confirm that YouTube reports the expected stream status and health before relying on the feed.
The YouTube LiveStreams API documents ingestion type, address, and stream status and health information. Check YouTube’s current requirements for the protocol and configuration you select.

Choose RTMP or HLS with the actual constraints in mind
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion types. Protocol choice depends on encoder support, required codecs, latency needs, and operational complexity. YouTube states that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream.
YouTube’s HLS setup specifies MPEG-2 TS segments delivered with HTTPS POST or PUT, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segments lasting 1–4 seconds. The official technical guide describes each media segment as representing a brief portion of the stream lasting between one and four seconds. Follow the current YouTube HLS setup requirements and HLS ingestion guide when implementing that protocol.

Keep a 24/7 stream operating
A continuous target requires more than starting an encoder once. Keep the process supervised, log errors, alert on unexpected exits or unhealthy delivery, and define how it will restart and resume the intended playlist. YouTube’s API health information can report delivery problems such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio, but health reporting is not an uptime guarantee.
- Monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s stream health.
- Test recovery behavior, including what happens after a network interruption, machine restart, or inaccessible bucket object.
- Make sure the loop can continue after the final playlist item and that playlist updates do not break the active sequence.
- Keep credentials and stream keys out of public logs and files.
Estimate the cost before choosing the architecture
There is no established all-in price for this specific bucket-to-YouTube workload in the cited Google Cloud documentation. Calculate using your region, stored media volume, stream bitrate, viewing and egress pattern, transcoding choices, and runtime. Include the encoder compute or managed pipeline, storage, and any network transfer charges relevant to your design; verify rates for the services and region you will actually use.
