To stream prerecorded video continuously on YouTube, run an encoder on a cloud-hosted computer: connect it to a YouTube live event with the event’s stream URL and key, then let it send the video over RTMPS. The cloud server can keep transmitting while your own computer is off, but you must configure and monitor the encoder, ensure the server’s outbound connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and plan for interruptions. Continuous transmission does not guarantee a complete YouTube replay or monetization.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and prepare the video
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days to live stream. Check eligibility before spending time configuring a server. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Choose a video you own or have permission to stream, including its music and other included material.
- Check that the file plays correctly from beginning to end and that its audio is present and at a suitable level.
- Decide whether you need only a continuous live transmission or also a preserved replay. YouTube’s archive limits make those different goals.
- Choose a cloud host and operating system that can run your selected encoder and sustain the required outbound bandwidth. The documentation cited here does not establish a particular VPS size or provider price, so verify capacity and costs with the host you choose.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow; follow the current on-screen prompts for title, visibility, and any audience settings.
- In the stream’s connection settings, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents the encoder setup at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Treat the stream key like a password: enter it only in the encoder configuration on your server, do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube if you believe it has been exposed.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; its connection instructions are at Stream using custom RTMP settings.
Configure the encoder for the source and YouTube
Choose settings that match the video file and the server’s sustained capacity. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current combination-specific values.
- Resolution and frame rate: Keep them appropriate to the source. Do not upscale low-resolution footage or assume a single setting suits every file.
- Video codec and bitrate: Select a supported codec and the bitrate specified for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. For one precise example, YouTube’s current table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for that combination; this is not a universal bitrate recommendation.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the encoder exposes this option; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 and check the actual stream preview for clear, continuous sound.
- Input and looping: Configure the encoder to read the uploaded video and repeat it if continuous playback is the goal. Confirm the loop behavior in a test instead of assuming the encoder will restart the file automatically.
Check cloud bandwidth, then test before going live
The cloud server must be able to send the combined audio and video bitrate steadily. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, a 14 Mbps total stream needs at least 16.8 Mbps of available sustained outbound capacity under that guidance. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee that a host’s network will remain uninterrupted. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Run a test with the same file, encoder settings, and cloud instance you intend to use.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview before starting the public event. Verify picture, audio, orientation, and that the video is not unexpectedly cropped or stretched.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream health during the test. If it reports instability, reduce the bitrate or select a less demanding source setting, then test again.
- Confirm the encoder’s loop and recovery behavior. A process, instance, or network failure may stop transmission; decide how you will detect the failure and restart the encoder.
Start the stream and keep it operational
- Start the encoder on the cloud server and wait for YouTube to receive the signal.
- In Live Control Room, verify the preview and stream health before starting or confirming the live event. YouTube advises creators to continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.
- Keep a local copy of the source file and, if a replay matters, arrange a separate recording or archive backup. Do not treat the YouTube replay as your only copy.
- For a planned stop, end the live event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. Check the event status before shutting down or changing the server.
- For a failure, check whether the encoder process is still running, whether the server is reachable, whether the source file is available, and whether YouTube still accepts the stream key. Restart or reconnect as appropriate, then confirm the preview and health status again.
Continuous live transmission is not the same as a complete replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, plan separate recording or backups and structure the live schedule with that limit in mind. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Streaming method does not establish that a video is original, authorized, or eligible for monetization. Use material you have rights to stream, and assess YouTube’s policies separately. YouTube’s monetization policy says its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and explicitly addresses repetitive or mass-produced content. Reused content is also reviewed at channel level; having permission alone does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not running, or connection failure | Recheck the copied connection details in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is active, and verify server connectivity. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health shows instability or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent cloud egress, or bitrate too high for the path | Check actual sustained outbound capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; lower bitrate and retest if necessary. |
| Video or audio does not look or sound right | Source mismatch, unsupported or unsuitable encoder settings, or an issue in the file | Inspect the source and preview; verify supported codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s settings. |
| The stream stops unexpectedly | Encoder process, instance, or network interruption | Check the process and server, reconnect the encoder, and confirm YouTube’s preview and stream health. Maintain a recovery plan rather than assuming the process will restart itself. |
| No complete replay appears | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold or archival did not complete | Use a separate recording or backup and plan around YouTube’s stated archive limit. |
Or let it run in the cloud
