You can run OBS on a remotely managed cloud desktop and send its output to YouTube Live while your own computer is off. The setup takes more than launching OBS: the virtual machine must handle your actual scenes and encoder, its network must sustain the outgoing bitrate, and you need a recovery plan. Also plan archives separately—YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as replays.

What a cloud desktop does—and what it does not do

A cloud desktop is a virtual computer hosted by a provider. You connect to it remotely, install OBS, add media and other sources, then leave OBS running to encode and send the stream to YouTube. Your local computer can disconnect or shut down; the cloud machine must remain powered on and connected.

This approach gives you control over OBS scenes, plugins, media sources, and encoding settings. It does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming: the VM, OBS, its network path, or YouTube can still encounter problems. The OBS Project notes, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system-requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, and says workload depends on factors such as encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use it as a baseline, not a promise of performance. OBS system requirements

Before you start

  • A cloud VM or desktop that you can keep running and access remotely, with resources selected for your scenes and encoder.
  • A stable outbound network connection with capacity above your stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and advises testing and monitoring the stream. YouTube streaming tips
  • OBS downloaded from the official OBS Project site.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • Your media files, any required audio inputs or routing, and a plan for reconnecting to the desktop and restarting OBS after interruptions.

Choose and prepare the cloud machine

Match resources to the OBS workload

Do not choose a VM based only on a provider’s generic minimum specification. A static scene with a single video source may demand less than a layered composition with filters, animated graphics, multiple sources, or software encoding. The chosen encoder also matters. Check CPU capacity, any available hardware-encoding support, sustained performance, storage, and the VM’s outbound network before committing to a long billing period. There is no universally validated VM size for this workflow.

Check ongoing charges and recovery access

Continuous use means ongoing compute charges; a GPU, disk storage, and data transfer may add costs depending on the provider and configuration. Request a current estimate for the machine, region, attached resources, and expected transfer. Google Cloud documents how Compute Engine sustained-use discounts work, but that documentation is not a price quote or performance benchmark for running OBS. Google Cloud sustained-use discounts

Before relying on the VM, confirm that you can reconnect after closing your remote desktop client. Keep OBS profiles, scenes, and media somewhere that persists across a VM restart; determine how the provider handles stops, failures, and automatic restarts. Those procedures vary by provider, so verify them for the machine you select. A restart policy can bring a VM back, but you should still test whether OBS itself resumes and reconnects to YouTube as intended.

Install OBS and build the stream

  1. Connect to the VM. Use the provider’s supported remote desktop method and verify that you can disconnect and reconnect without ending the VM session.
  2. Install OBS. Download and install OBS from the official OBS Project source. Open it on the VM and allow any required firewall or network access for streaming.
  3. Set up scenes and sources. Add the media, graphics, and audio routing the broadcast requires. Confirm that local media paths point to files available on the VM, not only to files on your home computer.
  4. Choose initial settings. If you are unsure where to begin, OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point. It is not a 24/7 reliability test; validate the result with your actual scene and stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this ahead of your planned start. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create a stream or reuse an appropriate existing one.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and key provided by YouTube.
  4. Enter the credentials in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or the applicable custom service option, then enter the server URL and stream key as appropriate for the selected service.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a scene, screenshot, public document, or shared log. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Set sustainable video and network settings

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on the content, VM encoding capacity, and outbound bandwidth. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use that live-stream guidance rather than bitrate tables for uploaded videos. YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube live encoder settings

Make sure the VM’s sustained upload capacity can carry the selected stream bitrate with room to spare. YouTube recommends 20% network headroom for the outgoing stream. A provider’s advertised network speed alone does not prove that a particular VM will sustain the bitrate continuously, so test from the selected machine and monitor stream health. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Also account for the load created by recording locally while streaming. Recording can use additional encoding resources and storage; test it as part of the full workload rather than assuming the stream-only configuration will remain stable.

Test the whole path before leaving it unattended

  1. Run a representative test. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, sources, motion, and audio—not an empty scene that understates the load.
  2. Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. Check for dropped frames, interruptions, missing video, and audio problems. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream quality. Live encoder settings
  3. Check the public watch page. Confirm that the audience-facing stream has the expected picture and sound.
  4. Test remote recovery. Disconnect your local remote desktop client, reconnect, and verify that the VM and OBS continue working. Separately test how OBS behaves if it closes or the VM restarts; do not assume reconnect behavior without checking it.
  5. Arrange monitoring. For unattended operation, decide who or what will notice a stopped stream, encoding failure, or network problem and how they will reconnect and recover it.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit

Transmission and replay availability are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, plan segments shorter than 12 hours and consider keeping a local recording backup where feasible. A local recording consumes VM resources and disk space, so include its encoding load, storage capacity, and retention plan in your test. YouTube: Archive live streams

Common problems and what to check

  • OBS opens, but the stream stutters or drops frames: check encoder load, scene complexity, VM performance under sustained use, and outbound bandwidth. Reduce the workload or select settings that the tested machine and network can sustain.
  • YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems: verify the server URL and stream key, check the VM’s outbound connection, and compare available upload capacity with the bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  • The stream does not start after enabling live streaming: confirm that channel activation has completed. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • Video is missing or media sources show as unavailable: check that the files exist at the paths OBS uses on the VM and that the account running OBS can access them.
  • OBS stops when you close the remote desktop window: test the provider’s session behavior and reconnect method. The remote client should not be the only thing keeping the stream alive; confirm that OBS remains active on the VM after disconnecting.
  • A replay is missing after a very long broadcast: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use planned shorter segments and/or a local backup if archives are important.
  • The VM recovers but the broadcast does not: test OBS startup and reconnection separately from VM restart. Configure and verify a recovery process rather than treating machine availability as proof that the stream is live.

Alternatives to managing OBS on a cloud desktop

A cloud VM is useful when you need OBS-specific scenes, plugins, source handling, or direct control of the encoder. A local always-on PC avoids VM administration but depends on that PC and its home power and internet connection staying available. A hosted service designed to loop uploaded video is a different workflow: it does not run your OBS scene. Compare the approaches on control, encoding needs, recurring compute and transfer costs, network path, recovery, setup effort, and archive requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than operate an OBS scene, StreamNeo is a purpose-built alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on; uploaded video streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a cloud OBS desktop or a camera broadcast. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
