You can run a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live loop from a cloud desktop by installing OBS on the remote machine, adding the video as a looping Media Source, and connecting OBS to a YouTube stream with its stream URL and key. The cloud desktop keeps OBS running without your home computer staying on, but it is not a guaranteed 24/7 service: performance and continuity depend on the desktop configuration, network, and recovery setup. Test the complete stream before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance.
- A cloud desktop that you can access remotely, with a supported operating system and enough graphics/encoding capability for your intended resolution, frame rate, and OBS scene.
- OBS Studio installed on that desktop, plus the prerecorded video file stored somewhere the remote machine can access throughout the planned run.
- A stable outbound network connection capable of sustaining your chosen stream bitrate.
There is no universal cloud instance size that guarantees smooth OBS streaming. OBS says system needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; a compatible system does not by itself guarantee successful streaming. Use OBS’s system requirements guidance and test your actual scene and encoding settings on the selected desktop.
Choose and prepare the cloud desktop
Compare configurations for the workload
Cloud providers offer Windows virtual desktops and GPU-backed workstations, but those product descriptions are not OBS benchmarks or guarantees of continuous operation. For example, AWS documents Windows desktop options in its Research and Engineering Studio module and GPU-backed remote workstation options in its G4 instance overview. Google Cloud also documents GPU-accelerated Windows workstations.
Before choosing, check whether the configuration provides the operating system and OBS support you need, access to a suitable GPU or hardware encoder, stable outbound capacity, remote reconnection, persistent storage for your video and OBS configuration, and controls for scheduled shutdown or automatic stop. Compare the total cost for the runtime you actually need and confirm availability in your region. Provider offerings change, and no instance type should be assumed to meet your workload without a test.

Install OBS and put the video on the remote machine
Connect to the desktop using the provider’s remote-access method, install OBS from its official distribution, and transfer or download the video to a location available to that machine. OBS Media Source uses a local file path; if the file disappears or its path changes, the source may fail. Confirm how the provider handles disk and file persistence if you stop, rebuild, or replace the desktop.
Enable YouTube Live and create a stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Enable live streaming if this is the channel’s first encoder broadcast; initial activation may take up to 24 hours.
- In Live Control Room, create a stream or select one already configured. Check the title, audience, visibility, and scheduling options before you broadcast. YouTube notes that default privacy can depend on the account holder’s age; creators can change the setting.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or expose it in screenshots, recordings, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow and the stream details shown for your channel.

Set up the looping video in OBS
- Open OBS on the cloud desktop and create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, and create a new source.
- Enable Local File if needed and browse to the video file on the remote machine.
- Turn on Loop so OBS restarts the file after it reaches the end. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; compatibility can still depend on the file’s codecs and playback environment.
- Check Restart playback when source becomes active and Show nothing when playback ends against your intended scene behavior. With Loop enabled, the source should restart when playback completes; preview it to verify that the video and audio behave as expected.
- Keep the scene simple unless overlays or other sources are necessary. Additional scene complexity changes the workload OBS must render and encode.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stream settings
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if the service is available in the list, or use the stream URL supplied by YouTube if configuring a custom server.
- Enter the matching stream key from Live Control Room. Confirm that the selected stream and key belong together.
- In OBS output and video settings, choose an encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate for the cloud desktop and your content. Do not assume a GPU encoder is available merely because a provider offers a GPU-backed product; verify what OBS can use on the configured machine.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance to set protocol and encoding parameters. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate table includes resolution-specific recommendations, such as 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. Check the current table and match the setting to the desktop’s real upload capacity rather than treating that example as a universal target.
- If you need help choosing settings for the actual machine, run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS, then verify the result with a real test. OBS notes that the wizard can help, but it does not replace testing the intended workload.

Preflight the stream and plan for interruptions
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream if you do not want viewers to see the setup process. Use representative motion and audio, not just a static frame.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room for stream health and messages. Watch for dropped frames, encoding warnings, missing audio, or a delay between OBS and the YouTube preview.
- Adjust resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or scene complexity if the cloud desktop or network cannot sustain the stream. Repeat the test after changes.
- Configure OBS automatic reconnect as appropriate and make sure you can remotely reconnect to the cloud desktop. Reconnect features can help after some interruptions, but they do not guarantee recovery from every desktop, provider, encoder, or network failure.
- Arrange a way to check the desktop and YouTube stream health during the run. Confirm that provider settings will not automatically stop or suspend the machine while you expect the stream to continue.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer stream will be archived, or that OBS and the broadcast will continue indefinitely. For a long run, plan monitoring and recovery rather than relying on the loop setting alone. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshooting common problems

Cost and continuity trade-offs
A cloud desktop removes the need to keep your own computer powered on, but you still pay for the desktop configuration and its runtime under the provider’s terms. Add any storage, networking, licensing, or other charges that apply to your chosen setup. Because cost depends on provider, region, configuration, and whether the machine is running continuously, estimate the actual planned runtime rather than assuming a generic monthly figure.

A DIY cloud desktop also leaves you responsible for OBS configuration, file persistence, reconnect behavior, monitoring, and provider shutdown settings. If your main goal is simply to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream looping without maintaining a remote desktop, compare that operational burden with a purpose-built cloud service.
