You can use a 4G USB modem to send a Raspberry Pi FFmpeg stream to YouTube, but there is no universal plug-and-play recipe: the Pi and OS, modem interfaces, Indian operator and APN, local sustained upload, and video encoding path all have to work together. Identify your hardware first, connect the modem through the networking stack supported by your OS, measure upload at the installation site, then configure YouTube and test the complete stream before relying on it.

What you need to verify before setting it up

Treat the setup as a chain of dependencies rather than assuming that any device labelled “4G USB modem” will work. The exact Raspberry Pi, operating system, modem model and USB mode, SIM and plan, carrier coverage, video source, and target stream settings are not specified here, so settings and performance must be confirmed on your own hardware and at your location.

  • Raspberry Pi and OS: Record the Pi model and OS release. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes FFmpeg/libav integration and hardware H.264 encoding where available; Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders, which can add latency in real-time applications. Do not assume that a command or encoding speed will be the same across Pi models. Raspberry Pi camera and video documentation.
  • Video and audio source: Decide whether FFmpeg will capture a camera or other input, play a file, or pass through media that is already encoded. Note the required resolution, frame rate, and audio format; the source and Pi’s capabilities constrain what you can send.
  • Modem and carrier: Check the modem’s exact Linux support, USB mode and interfaces, required LTE bands, SIM/device requirements, power needs, and the carrier’s coverage where the Pi will sit.
  • Data and plan: Check current local plan limits, fair-use conditions, and restrictions on device or SIM use with the selected Indian operator. These vary; no specific carrier plan is established here.
  • Uplink at the site: You need sustained upload, not just a 4G connection indicator or the modem’s advertised maximum. Measure it at the final installation location and at relevant times before choosing a bitrate.

Check the 4G modem’s Linux compatibility

A USB modem has to expose interfaces that the installed operating system and its modem-management stack can use. ModemManager supports multiple mobile-broadband protocols and many USB modem types, but its documentation says a device exposing only a network port without a control port is not supported by ModemManager. Confirm the specific model and USB mode rather than relying on the words “4G USB modem.” See ModemManager’s WWAN device types.

Before buying or configuring one, confirm that the modem supports the LTE bands used by your chosen operator in your area, that your SIM and plan allow the intended use, and that the Pi can supply the modem’s power requirements. A powered USB hub may help if this particular combination needs additional power or stability; it is not a universal requirement.

Connect the modem using the OS networking stack

First identify the networking manager active on the Pi. Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm uses NetworkManager by default, and Raspberry Pi documents nmcli for Lite and headless networking. Other releases or operating systems may differ, so do not apply a command recipe written for a different release without checking. See Raspberry Pi networking documentation.

  1. Insert the SIM and connect the modem. Use the modem’s documented USB mode and check that the OS detects its interfaces. If it does not appear as a usable mobile-broadband device, resolve USB mode, Linux support, or power issues before configuring YouTube.
  2. Configure a mobile-broadband connection in the active network manager. On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, use NetworkManager; on a headless installation, its nmcli command-line interface is documented by Raspberry Pi. Exact commands and available modem settings depend on the modem and OS release.
  3. Enter the current APN from your carrier. NetworkManager’s mobile-broadband settings use an APN for the cellular data session. Obtain the correct APN from the selected Indian carrier for your SIM and plan; do not assume one APN works for every operator or plan. The NetworkManager settings reference notes that the APN is part of the mobile-broadband connection configuration and that the correct value matters for Internet access and may affect billing: NetworkManager settings reference.
  4. Verify Internet connectivity over cellular. Confirm that the Pi is using the modem connection and can reach the Internet before moving on. If it cannot, check SIM activation, plan and APN, modem interfaces, coverage, and the active network manager.

Measure upload and choose stream settings

Test repeated uploads and connection stability from the Pi’s actual installation location, including times when the stream will normally run. There is no established India-wide sustained 4G upload figure for this configuration, and a single speed test or a modem specification cannot establish a reliable stream bitrate. Choose a bitrate comfortably below what the connection sustains reliably, leaving headroom for variation and audio.

YouTube’s encoder guidance organizes setup around resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. The values must also fit the Pi’s ability to encode (if encoding is required) and the actual uplink. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest; use the current ingest URL and settings shown for your event rather than assuming an old URL or a setting from another stream. References: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube encoder setup.

If FFmpeg can pass through an already encoded source, that avoids asking the Pi to encode it again, but the source still has to match the stream settings and YouTube’s accepted input. If FFmpeg must encode in real time, test the chosen resolution and frame rate on the specific Pi; hardware H.264 availability depends on the model and software path, while Pi 5 software encoding may add latency. No universal FFmpeg command or performance level can be specified without the source, Pi, and settings.

Create the YouTube stream and connect FFmpeg

  1. Create or select the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup flow for the event.
  2. Copy the event’s current stream URL and private stream key. Enter them in FFmpeg’s output settings along with the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by your Pi and measured uplink. Keep the stream key secret: anyone with it may be able to send to your stream.
  3. Start FFmpeg and check YouTube’s incoming preview. Do not treat a running FFmpeg process as proof that the audience can see a correct stream. Confirm the preview, video, audio, and stream health before going live.
  4. Go live in YouTube only after the preview is correct. Follow the event’s live controls and status in YouTube; labels and workflow can change.

Test recovery before leaving the stream unattended

A stable initial connection does not prove that a long-running stream will recover from an outage. Before depending on it, test the complete chain under controlled conditions:

  • Interrupt and restore the cellular connection; check whether the modem and network manager reconnect.
  • If relevant, remove and reconnect the modem or test modem re-enumeration.
  • Restart the Pi and confirm that the modem connection and FFmpeg process return as intended.
  • Stop and restart FFmpeg, then confirm that YouTube receives the stream and the preview returns.
  • Observe the stream long enough to catch intermittent upload drops or encoding overload at the intended quality.

These are tests to perform, not claims of a verified modem/carrier combination or measured uptime. Keep the stream key private during setup and recovery testing.

Troubleshooting: where the chain commonly breaks

Symptom What to check Practical next step
The modem is not detected as mobile broadband USB mode, exposed control/data interfaces, Linux support, and power. Confirm the exact modem’s Linux interface support and whether it exposes a control port for the modem stack. Check the maker’s instructions for its USB mode. Consider a powered hub only if this setup needs additional power.
The modem is detected but has no Internet access SIM activation, plan/device restrictions, carrier coverage, and APN. Verify the carrier’s current APN for that SIM and plan, then confirm the cellular connection is active in the installed network manager.
The Pi has Internet but YouTube does not receive the stream Event’s current ingest URL, private stream key, and FFmpeg output settings. Copy the URL and key again from the intended YouTube event, check the encoder configuration, and inspect the YouTube preview.
The stream starts but drops or stutters Sustained cellular upload, bitrate headroom, and connection stability at the installation location. Repeat upload and stability checks at relevant times; reduce bitrate or resolution to a level the connection sustains reliably, then verify the preview again.
Video is delayed or the Pi struggles to encode Pi model, encoding path, resolution, frame rate, and whether the source can be passed through. Test on the specific Pi and source. Where compatible, pass through already encoded media rather than encoding again; otherwise lower the encoding load and retest.
The stream does not return after an outage or reboot Modem reconnection, network-manager behavior, FFmpeg restart behavior, and YouTube preview. Run the interruption and restart tests before unattended use, and make sure each layer recovers in sequence.

Cost and buying decisions in India

Compare candidate modems and plans on the factors that determine whether the stream will work, not just advertised peak speed. LTE bands and coverage are location- and operator-dependent; current plan limits, fair-use terms, and device restrictions must be checked with the chosen carrier. No named modem, carrier plan, or current local price is established here.

Decision factor What to verify
Linux interface support Whether the specific modem’s USB mode and control/data interfaces work with the installed OS and modem stack.
Indian operator compatibility Supported LTE bands, SIM/device requirements, and coverage for the selected operator at the installation location.
Sustained upload Repeated upload and stability at the actual site and relevant times, with bitrate headroom.
Network management Whether the OS’s active manager and modem support can configure the device and reconnect after interruption.
Power and installation Modem power needs, antenna arrangement, and whether this specific Pi/modem combination needs a powered USB hub.
Cost and terms Current local data limits, fair-use conditions, plan/device restrictions, and coverage.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before streaming recorded material, confirm you have the rights to use its video, music, and other included content. A technically successful FFmpeg connection does not establish permission to broadcast the material or guarantee YouTube will allow it. Review YouTube’s current policies and your content rights before scheduling a long-running stream.
