To upstream code, first follow the project’s contribution instructions, confirm the change fits a real need, and then submit a focused, tested patch through the project’s accepted channel. GitHub pull requests are common, but they are not universal: the Linux kernel, for example, uses a patch-based process.
Before you start coding
Read the project’s contribution instructions
Start with the repository’s README and contribution guide. On GitHub, contribution guidelines may be in the repository root, docs, or .github; also check issue and pull request templates. Follow the project’s stated code style, test expectations, licensing requirements, and code of conduct. GitHub explains where contribution guidelines may appear in its repository contributor guidance.
Check that the project wants the change
Search existing issues, discussions, and past pull requests to see whether the problem has already been reported or addressed. Review recent project activity and maintainer responses to understand how contributions are handled. For a substantial feature or architectural change, ask in the project’s public issue tracker or designated discussion channel before investing heavily in implementation. If you plan to work on an existing issue, leave a comment so other contributors know.
Prepare a focused, testable change
For a GitHub-hosted project, a common approach is to fork and clone the repository, add the original repository as upstream, create a branch, and keep that branch current. Make a change small enough for maintainers to understand and review. Run relevant existing tests and add tests when appropriate. For visible HTML or CSS changes, screenshots can help reviewers understand the result.

- Keep the patch focused on the problem you intend to solve.
- Follow the project’s naming, formatting, and test conventions.
- Check the diff for unrelated edits before submitting.
- Describe what you tested and include reproduction steps when they clarify the issue.
Explain the change clearly
A useful contribution description connects the underlying problem to the change: explain who is affected, why it matters, and what the patch does. Include relevant issue context, steps to reproduce a bug, and test results. Avoid unsupported claims about performance or resource savings; if you claim an improvement, provide evidence and explain the trade-offs.
Submit through the project’s accepted channel
Use the process documented by the project rather than assuming every project accepts GitHub pull requests. If it does use pull requests, push your branch to your fork and open a pull request with the original repository as the base and your fork and branch as the head. Give it a descriptive title, explain the change, and link related issues. A draft pull request can be useful when you want early feedback before the work is ready to merge. GitHub’s pull request documentation describes the platform’s collaboration workflow.

Some projects use mailing lists, patch files, or another documented route. Compare the required submission channel, patch formatting, maintainer routing, tests, sign-off or licensing rules, and communication norms. The project’s current contribution guide is the authority for its process.
Linux kernel contributions use a different workflow
Do not apply generic GitHub pull request steps to Linux kernel contributions. Read the current Linux kernel patch submission documentation, use MAINTAINERS to identify the relevant subsystem and recipients, and follow the instructions for preparing and sending patches.

The kernel guidance says, “Solve only one problem per patch.” A patch description should explain the underlying problem, its user impact, the technical change, and relevant evidence. When resubmitting a patch, provide a complete description for the new version. The kernel’s Developer’s Certificate of Origin sign-off records that you created the work or have the right to submit it under the applicable open-source license.
Respond to review and respect the decision
Keep discussion and revisions in the existing public pull request or issue so the context stays together. Address feedback constructively, explain any disagreement with evidence, and update the patch in the project’s requested format. Avoid force-pushing after review begins if doing so would make the discussion harder to follow. If maintainers have not responded after a reasonable interval, a polite follow-up in the same thread is appropriate.

A contribution may be revised, deferred, or declined. Ask for useful feedback when it would help you improve, but respect the maintainers’ decision about whether the change fits the project.

Follow the project’s conduct rules, communicate respectfully, and use public project channels for ordinary technical discussion.
