To add an upsell in WooCommerce, edit the product you want it associated with, open Product Data > Linked Products, select products in the Upsells field, then update the product. In the block-based product editor, use its Linked Products section. Upsells are alternatives or upgrades for the product a shopper is viewing—not add-ons for the cart.

What WooCommerce means by an upsell

WooCommerce defines an upsell as a product recommended instead of the product currently being viewed. In practice, choose a relevant alternative or upgrade—such as a more capable model or a higher-quality version—and explain the practical benefit in its product copy. WooCommerce describes upsells as typically higher-quality or higher-priced alternatives, but does not prescribe a price difference or guarantee that recommendations increase sales.

An upsell is attached to a particular product and is intended for that product’s page. Its exact display depends on your theme and template, so check the live product page after saving.

Add an upsell in the classic product editor

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Products and edit the product whose page should show the recommendation.
  2. Scroll to Product Data and open Linked Products.
  3. In the Upsells field, search for a catalog product and select it. Add other suitable alternatives if needed.
  4. Click Update.
  5. Preview the product page using your active theme and confirm that the recommendation appears as expected.

Use Linked Products in the block-based product editor

WooCommerce’s product-editor documentation also describes a Linked Products section where you search for and select products. The documented section is available for all product types. Add the recommendation there, save the product, and preview its page; the storefront presentation can still vary by theme and template.

Choose the right recommendation type

Upsells, cross-sells, and related products serve different purposes. Choose based on what the shopper is considering and where the recommendation belongs.

Type What it recommends Typical placement or selection
Upsells An alternative or upgrade to the product being viewed Single-product page; merchants select products in the product’s Linked Products settings
Cross-sells Complementary items that go with products in the shopper’s cart Cart recommendations; Product Collection blocks can display cross-sell collections
Related products Products sharing categories or tags with the current product Generated automatically in WooCommerce’s documented core workflow, rather than hand-picked in Linked Products

WooCommerce’s related products, up-sells and cross-sells guide explains these distinctions and the linked-product settings. Its product-editor guide covers the newer editor workflow.

Use Product Collection blocks for storefront presentation

The WooCommerce Product Collection block includes an Upsells collection for promoting higher-end or premium versions. Add linked products through the product’s Edit Product screen. A separate Cross-sells collection is intended for products that pair with cart items. The block and its placement depend on your active theme and template; consult WooCommerce’s Product Collection block documentation and verify the result in your storefront.

When to consider recommendation extensions

Manual linked products are the straightforward choice when you want to select an upsell for each product yourself. Extensions add different selection rules or recommendation strategies; they are not required for a basic upsell.

  • Product Recommendations: WooCommerce documents strategies including category-based upsells, cross-sells, and frequently bought together recommendations. Its category-based example uses filters and ranking factors such as popularity, rating, and freshness, then deploys recommendations in a product-page location. See the Product Recommendations documentation and strategy guide. Check the extension’s current features, requirements, and price before choosing it.
  • AI Product Recommendations: WooCommerce documents AI and custom recommendation modes, rules, filters, and placements; the AI mode documentation describes an API-key setting. Check current availability, cost, and requirements before adopting this separate option. See the AI Product Recommendations documentation.

Before selecting an approach, consider whether you need per-product manual control or rule-based selection, where recommendations should appear, and whether your theme and blocks support that presentation. Do not assume a particular placement will be available in every store.
