Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUpload your video files to Hetzner with SFTP or SCP, then run a separate encoder on an always-on Hetzner Cloud server to send the playlist to YouTube Live. A Storage Box can hold files, but it is not an interactive server and does not encode or broadcast them. The transfer and the livestream are separate jobs.
Choose the right Hetzner product
Use a Storage Box when you need remote file storage, or a Hetzner Cloud server when you need a machine that can run an encoder continuously. A Storage Box supports file access over SFTP or SCP, but not interactive SSH on port 22; it cannot run a playback process. Hetzner documents Storage Box access at its SFTP/SCP guide and distinguishes its products in its Storage Box documentation.
For a self-hosted broadcast, the usual division is: upload to the Storage Box, then have an encoder running on a Cloud server read those files and send the live feed to YouTube. Alternatively, keep the files directly on the Cloud server. The reviewed Hetzner and YouTube guidance does not establish a tested 24/7 playlist-loop command or suitable Cloud server size for a particular resolution, so choose and test the playback stack for your workload rather than assuming every VM can encode it.
Prepare YouTube Live before uploading
Check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days; its getting-started guidance gives 16 as the minimum age for livestreaming. Check the current status in YouTube Studio before building the server workflow: YouTube livestreaming eligibility and getting started.

Create a stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not paste it into public scripts, screenshots, support posts, or commands that may be saved in shell history. Reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
YouTube describes the encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming and documents stream setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Upload files to a Hetzner Storage Box
Enable access and connect
For a Storage Box, use the hostname shown in the Hetzner Console and connect by SFTP or SCP over port 22. Hetzner says external connections require External Reachability to be enabled in the Console. Authentication can use a password or a supported SSH key. Before accepting a host fingerprint, compare it with a trusted value obtained independently; do not blindly accept an unexpected fingerprint.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
You can transfer files with an SFTP client such as WinSCP or FileZilla, or with the command-line tools SFTP and SCP. Use the hostname and account details from your own Hetzner Console rather than copying credentials into an article or shared script. See Hetzner’s Storage Box SFTP/SCP instructions.
Verify the transferred files
- Confirm the upload completed without transfer errors.
- Check that each file appears in the intended remote directory and that its size is plausible.
- Open or probe representative files from the machine that will play them; an upload completing does not prove the media is decodable or that audio is present.
- Keep a separate local copy of important source files. A remote upload is not, by itself, a backup plan.
Run the playlist and encoder on an always-on host
An encoder must read or receive the videos in sequence and send an outgoing feed to YouTube. YouTube’s official encoder documentation confirms the ingest workflow, but it does not validate a specific player, looping syntax, process supervisor, or Hetzner deployment. Select a playback/encoding tool whose current documentation supports your chosen playlist and test the precise configuration on your own Cloud server before relying on it.

For a continuous channel, plan for more than successful startup: the host must stay available, the playback process must recover from errors, and someone or something must detect a stalled feed. You are responsible for server updates, access security, monitoring, and recovery. Hetzner recommends allowing only the firewall ports your architecture actually requires; do not apply Cloud-server SSH assumptions to a Storage Box. See Hetzner Cloud firewall guidance.
Set YouTube-compatible output and ingest
Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Enter YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key in the encoder’s private configuration and confirm the encoder is using the intended protocol. Do not expose the key in logs or public configuration files.

Match the video and audio settings
- Video: H.264.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a given Hetzner VM can encode the selected resolution in real time. Check the encoder’s output and host load under the actual media and settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Know when HLS is relevant
HLS is another ingest option where the encoder supports it. YouTube specifies transport-stream (TS) segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling ingest playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those limits describe the ingest protocol; they are not the playlist of prerecorded videos you want to show viewers. YouTube notes HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions.

Test the broadcast and plan operations
- Start the playback and encoder process, then wait for YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview to show a stable picture and audio.
- Check the public watch page from a separate device or browser. Confirm the intended stream is live and the audio/video continue across a transition between source files.
- Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, missing audio, black gaps, or playback stopping at the end of the playlist.
- Document how to restart the process and recover the stream after a server reboot, encoder crash, network issue, or YouTube disconnect. The exact service-manager configuration depends on your chosen operating system and encoder.
- Monitor the host and the YouTube stream rather than assuming a process that started once will remain healthy indefinitely.
Continuous broadcasting requires an availability and recovery plan; the official guidance cited here does not certify any particular Hetzner loop deployment as 24/7 reliable.

Prerecorded video played as a live stream is still subject to YouTube’s rules. You must have the necessary rights for all video and audio, including music, and comply with Community Guidelines and applicable laws. A playlist does not make copyrighted material safe to broadcast. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s live streaming policies before going live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a continuous stream that runs longer than 12 hours; if retaining a recording matters, arrange a separate recording or archive process. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Choose self-hosting or a managed cloud service
| Approach | What you manage | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Hetzner Storage Box plus Cloud server | File transfer, playback and encoder setup, server security and updates, monitoring, restarts, and archive planning. | When you want control over the server and configuration and are prepared to operate the whole pipeline. |
| Managed prerecorded-live service | Upload media and configure the service; service-specific controls, availability, and terms depend on the provider. | When you prefer not to keep your own computer or server responsible for playback and recovery. |
YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but that listing does not establish its current prices, terms, or availability in your territory. StreamNeo is another option: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud, so your home computer does not need to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Learn about StreamNeo.
Common problems and fixes
- SFTP connection fails: Check that External Reachability is enabled for the Storage Box, the hostname and account are correct, and your network permits outbound port 22. Remember that a Storage Box does not provide interactive SSH.
- Host fingerprint warning: Stop and verify the fingerprint using an independent trusted source before proceeding. Do not bypass an unexpected change without checking it.
- Files upload but nothing appears on YouTube: SFTP/SCP only transfers files. Start a separate playback/encoder process on an always-on host and configure it with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Check channel eligibility, ingest protocol and URL, stream key, encoder status, and outbound network access. Reset the key if it may have been disclosed.
- Preview appears but playback stutters or stops: Inspect the source media, encoder errors, CPU load, and host/network health. The recommended settings do not establish that your particular VM can handle a given resolution.
- Stream ends or fails to recover: Check whether the source playlist reached its end, whether the encoder exited, and whether your restart and monitoring plan is working. Recovery behavior depends on the implementation you selected.
- Archive is missing: Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not for longer continuous broadcasts. Use a separate recording plan when retention is required.
