To upload screenshots from a self-hosted runner, first generate image files in your test workflow, then run the Argos CLI against the directory containing them: npx @argos-ci/cli upload ./screenshots. Give the job an Argos project token through ARGOS_TOKEN, unless you are using a supported provider-specific authentication method. The upload step does not capture screenshots for you.
Prepare the runner and screenshot output
Argos’s general upload flow separates screenshot capture from upload. Run your existing Playwright, Cypress, mobile-test, or other capture process first, and make sure it writes files to a known directory. The CLI pattern documented for directory uploads is argos upload ./screenshots. See the Argos CLI documentation for the current command reference.
- Capture: Run the test or capture command that creates screenshot files.
- Check the path: Confirm the actual output directory and pass that path to the upload command. Change
./screenshotsif your workflow writes elsewhere. - Install and run the CLI: Ensure the runner can invoke the Argos CLI. The command below uses
npxas an illustrative invocation; installation details depend on your runner image and package-management setup. - Authenticate: For a generic token-based workflow, store the project token as a protected CI secret and expose it to the upload process as
ARGOS_TOKEN. Avoid printing the token in logs. - Check build metadata: Argos reads commit, branch, and pull-request information from CI environment variables. Confirm your CI provider makes the expected metadata available to the job.
Upload a directory with the Argos CLI
Use a separate CLI step when your test framework already saves screenshots to disk and you want to upload them after capture. Adapt the command and path to your project:

This example shows the order of operations. The dependency installation, script name, directory, and secret interpolation are illustrative; adjust them for your repository and workflow.

Choose CLI, Node SDK, or Playwright integration
CLI
Choose the CLI when a framework or script has already created screenshot files and a command-line upload step fits your pipeline. It is the framework-independent file-upload route.
Node.js SDK
Use the Node SDK when upload should happen inside a Node process or when you need to set the screenshot root and file patterns programmatically. The SDK example imports upload from @argos-ci/core, passes root and files, and uses ARGOS_TOKEN by default when no token is supplied.

Playwright reporter or helper
If your capture flow runs in Playwright, Argos also documents a reporter integration and an argosScreenshot helper. A reporter can upload during a test run; the CLI remains useful when files come from another framework or when you want a distinct upload step. Review the Argos Playwright documentation to choose the integration that matches your test setup.
GitHub Actions authentication: token or OIDC
For generic runner setups, use a protected Argos project token as ARGOS_TOKEN. GitHub Actions has an additional documented option: Argos’s changelog dated May 11, 2026 describes OIDC authentication instead of a reusable Argos token. To use it, enable OIDC in Argos Project Settings and grant the workflow id-token: write; the documented setup removes ARGOS_TOKEN from the job.

The same announcement describes tokenless fallback behavior when GitHub does not issue OIDC tokens, especially for fork pull requests and public repositories, after Argos verifies the workflow run with GitHub. This is a GitHub-specific flow and should not be assumed to apply to other self-hosted CI providers. See the Argos changelog entry for its setup details.
Keep visual comparisons reproducible
Screenshot output can vary with the operating system and browser environment. When consistent comparisons matter, keep the runner image, browser version and setup, fonts, and relevant dependencies stable. Argos notes that rendering is platform-dependent; consistency in the capture environment helps reduce noise in diffs. See the Argos FAQ for its guidance on rendering differences.
