To loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live using Vultr, transfer the files to a Vultr server over SFTP, add them in OBS as a looping Media Source or VLC Video Source, then send OBS’s output to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. For a large collection, Vultr Object Storage with Rclone is another way to stage files, but Vultr’s documented workflow does not show OBS playing directly from an Object Storage bucket.
Choose where the library will live
There are two distinct workflows: upload files to the Vultr server that runs OBS, or stage them in Vultr Object Storage using Rclone. The first is the direct playback path documented in Vultr’s Broadcaster guide. Object Storage can be useful for transferring and storing a library, but the cited guide does not configure OBS to read bucket objects as media sources.
- Server directory: Use this when OBS needs to select and play files from the same server. Make sure the OBS process can access the destination directory.
- Object Storage: Use this as a separate storage or transfer leg. To play the files through the documented OBS workflow, arrange access to them or copy them into a server-side playback directory.
Do not confuse this with uploading every recording to YouTube as an ordinary video. For the loop stream described here, OBS reads the media from Vultr and sends a live encoder feed to YouTube.
Transfer files to the Vultr server over SFTP
- Identify a suitable server directory. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide uses
/tmpas an example working location. Treat that as an example, not a recommendation for durable library storage; choose a directory appropriate for your server and confirm the OBS process has permission to read it. - Connect to the server over SFTP. Open a terminal and connect using the server’s SFTP access details. Follow Vultr’s guide for its Broadcaster deployment and navigate to your chosen destination directory.
- Create a directory for the media. Keep the uploaded files organized in a folder intended for OBS playback.
- Upload from your local machine. Use SFTP’s
putcommand to transfer files from the local directory to the remote working directory. For a library, upload the files you intend to use and retain a clear naming or folder structure so you can select them later in OBS. - Confirm the files are present and readable. Before configuring the broadcast, check that the transfer completed and that the account running OBS can access the files.
The Vultr guide demonstrates this direct-to-server transfer and then uses the upload directory when choosing media in OBS. It does not establish a universal persistent path, a maximum SFTP library size, a transfer speed, or a completion-time estimate.

Stage a library in Vultr Object Storage with Rclone
If you prefer to stage files in Object Storage, Vultr’s Rclone configuration guide uses Rclone’s S3 backend. Configure the Vultr provider, the endpoint for your bucket’s region, and your access key and secret key. The guide’s example endpoint is https://ewr1.vultrobjects.com; use the endpoint appropriate to your own region rather than copying that example blindly. Its example keeps the object ACL private.
Choose copy or sync deliberately
rclone copytransfers files without mirroring deletions from the source.rclone syncmakes the destination match the source. It can delete destination objects that are absent from the source, so check the destination and the exact source and destination paths before running it.
Vultr’s guide demonstrates both commands, including the removal behavior of sync. Do not treat sync as a harmless one-way upload. The guide also demonstrates bucket-to-bucket and cross-region transfers, but not direct playback from a bucket in OBS.
Keep access private unless public URLs are needed
Use a private ACL unless you have a deliberate need for public URL access. If Object Storage responds with HTTP 429, 503, or 504 rate-limit errors, Vultr suggests limiting transactions and parallel transfers with --tpslimit 100 and --transfers 1. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not throughput guarantees.

Set up OBS to loop one file or a playlist
Loop a single video
- Open OBS on the Vultr server and add a Media Source to the scene.
- Browse to the file in the directory where you uploaded it.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source settings and save.
- Check the OBS preview for moving video and inspect the Audio Mixer to confirm the source audio is present at the expected level.
Loop multiple videos
For a rotating multi-file library, Vultr’s Broadcaster guide directs users to the VLC Video Source to set up files that play and loop repeatedly. Add the intended media files to that source, then confirm the order, picture, and audio in OBS before streaming. If the source or files are unavailable in your OBS installation, resolve that playback setup before starting the broadcast; the guide does not describe an Object Storage bucket as an OBS media source.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare a live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or manage the stream you want to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; keep them private. If a key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Select the matching stream URL and configure OBS to send the stream to YouTube.
- Check the live encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate based on your measured upload capacity and YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than assuming one preset suits every server or connection.
- Test, then start streaming. Use representative movement and audio in a preflight test. Start Streaming in OBS, verify the stream is active in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and monitor stream health and any messages during the broadcast.
YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. If your stream does not depend on audience interaction, lower latency may be less important than stable playback.
Keep YouTube upload limits separate from Vultr limits
YouTube Help’s page Upload videos longer than 15 minutes says unverified accounts are limited by default to individual uploads of 15 minutes or less, recommends an up-to-date browser for uploads larger than 20 GB, and sets the maximum individual upload at 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. These are rules for ordinary uploads to YouTube, not limits for SFTP transfers to Vultr, Object Storage capacity, or a Vultr account’s library size.

Likewise, YouTube’s recommendations for encoding ordinary video uploads are separate from its live-encoder settings. For this workflow, configure OBS according to the live guidance, and do not infer a Vultr storage allowance, transfer speed, or monthly cost from YouTube’s upload rules.
Check copyright and channel eligibility before going live
Use only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast, including music, images, and other material embedded in a recording. A loop does not change the rights status of the underlying content. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies for your channel; a technically successful broadcast does not guarantee that the content is eligible for every YouTube feature or revenue program.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot find or open a media file | The path is wrong, the transfer is incomplete, or the OBS process cannot read the destination. | Confirm the file exists on the server, browse to its actual path in the source settings, and check directory and file permissions for the account running OBS. |
| A single video stops instead of repeating | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the source settings, enable Loop, save, and verify the repeat in the preview. |
| A multi-file playlist does not rotate | The wrong source type or an incomplete VLC Video Source setup may be in use. | Use OBS’s VLC Video Source as described in Vultr’s guide, add the intended files, and test playback order before going live. |
| Video plays but the stream has no audio | The source audio may be missing, muted, or not routed as expected. | Check the Audio Mixer while the media plays and perform a test with representative audio before the live broadcast. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the wrong destination settings are selected. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Studio into OBS, check the RTMPS option, and reset a compromised key. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers buffer | The configured bitrate or resolution may exceed what the server’s upload path can sustain, or the connection may be unstable. | Measure available upload capacity, choose an appropriate YouTube-recommended live setting, test with real movement and audio, and monitor Live Control Room messages. Consider that lower latency can increase buffering. |
| Rclone receives HTTP 429, 503, or 504 from Object Storage | Vultr’s guide identifies these as possible rate-limit responses. | Try Vultr’s suggested --tpslimit 100 and --transfers 1 flags; these reduce transaction rate and parallelism but do not promise a particular transfer time. |
| Objects disappear after an Rclone run | rclone sync removes destination objects that are not present in the source. |
Review the command’s source and destination, inspect the bucket, and use rclone copy instead when you want to transfer without mirroring deletions. |
Decide whether to operate OBS on Vultr or use a managed cloud service
Running OBS on Vultr gives you control of the server and the direct media workflow, but you are responsible for setup, file access, monitoring, and recovery. A managed continuous-streaming service can reduce server administration, but compare current pricing, library ingestion, storage limits, controls, and recovery responsibilities for your own use case. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists OBS as open-source recording and live-streaming software and also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. The directory does not establish a price, reliability ranking, or service-limit comparison between Gyre and Vultr.
