You can upgrade laptop RAM only if the exact model has a removable memory slot and supports the module you plan to install. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual for your full model and configuration: memory described as integrated into the system board is soldered, while a separate module-removal procedure indicates socketed RAM. Some laptops have both.

Find out whether your laptop’s RAM is soldered

  1. Find the laptop’s full model number, machine type, or service tag. Check the device label, firmware or System Information, or the manufacturer’s support page. A family name alone may cover configurations with different memory layouts.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual for that exact model and configuration. Search for “memory,” “system board,” “integrated,” “onboard,” “soldered,” “SODIMM,” and “memory module.”
  3. Check whether the manual describes memory as integrated into the system board or gives a removal procedure for a separate module. Integrated memory is soldered and not a removable module; a separately removable module is socketed.

Some laptops have soldered memory and a socketed module. For example, Dell’s Inspiron 5490 service manual says the primary memory module is integrated into the system board and scopes its removal instructions to a secondary module. Dell’s Vostro 5490 service manual likewise describes removing a secondary module while noting that the primary memory is integrated. These model-specific examples illustrate why a laptop may be partly, rather than fully, upgradeable.

Use software that reports memory slots or third-party upgrade tools only as clues. A reported slot count does not prove that a physical, replaceable slot is available. Crucial’s compatibility selector can help cross-check a potential upgrade, but the laptop maker’s exact-model documentation should establish what the system supports.

Check which RAM will work before buying

Record the laptop’s existing memory and verify the proposed module against the manufacturer’s documentation. Check each of these details:

  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
  • How much memory is soldered, how many slots are present, and which slots are occupied or available.
  • The maximum supported total capacity, including any soldered memory that remains installed.
  • The module form factor, such as SODIMM, and the DDR generation.
  • The supported memory speed and any other requirements stated for the configuration.

Do not choose a stick based just on capacity or a broad label such as “laptop RAM.” DDR generation and module form factor must match the laptop, and the system’s capacity and speed limits vary by model and configuration. A product listing may show details such as DDR generation, SODIMM form factor, voltage, and capacity; for example, Crucial’s 8GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM listing provides those specifications. It is an example of the information to compare, not a recommendation for an unspecified laptop.

Once the manual confirms the slot and limits, compare the exact product specifications with it or use a compatibility selector as a second check. If the module’s notch does not line up with the slot, stop rather than forcing it; Crucial’s installation guide also warns against forcing a module when its groove and the slot ridge do not match.

Prepare using your laptop’s service procedure

Use the service manual for the exact laptop before opening its case. The manual—not a teardown for another model—should tell you how to remove the cover, isolate power, and access the memory. Follow its electrostatic-discharge precautions and use the tools it specifies. Work on a stable, clean surface, and stop if the case, battery, or module does not match the documented procedure.

For one model-specific example, Dell’s Latitude 5521 replacement guide, published January 27, 2026, instructs users to remove the cover, disconnect the battery cable, release the module’s clips, and lift it from its connector. Those steps describe that laptop; your own service manual takes precedence.

Install the module and verify the result

  1. Follow the exact model’s instructions to open the laptop and isolate power before touching the memory.
  2. Remove or retain the existing module as your laptop’s supported configuration requires. Release its retaining clips and lift it from the connector as directed by the manual.
  3. Align the replacement module’s notch with the slot. Insert it at the angle specified for the laptop, then press it down until its clips secure it. Dell’s Latitude 5521 guide describes this approach for that model; do not assume the same sequence applies to every laptop.
  4. Reassemble the laptop as directed, then check firmware or the operating system to confirm that the expected total memory is detected. In Windows, Crucial’s general guide suggests checking Installed Memory in System settings.

If the expected memory is not detected, power down and follow the laptop and module instructions to reseat the module. If the laptop fails to start or shows an error, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting procedure rather than repeatedly forcing the module or continuing with an uncertain configuration.
