There is no single safe command to upgrade KDE Plasma 5.25 to 5.26: Plasma is installed through your Linux distribution’s packages. First check whether your distribution’s official repositories support Plasma 5.26 for your release, then use its normal system-update process. Plasma 5.26 was released in October 2022, so it may not be available for your current distribution today.

Check whether your distribution offers Plasma 5.26

Identify your Linux distribution and release, then check its official package repositories or KDE packaging guidance for that exact release. KDE explains that distributions prepare Plasma packages independently, so availability and timing differ. Its release announcement also cautioned that packages might not be available on every distribution when Plasma 5.26 launched.

Do not assume that a package intended for a different distribution release, or a third-party repository found in a search, is a safe substitute. If the official package information does not establish a supported route for your system, ask your distribution’s support community before changing repositories.

Upgrade through your distribution’s package manager

  1. Update your current system first. Use the distribution’s standard update tool or documented process to bring the installed system fully up to date.
  2. Review the proposed package changes. Confirm that the pending changes come from repositories you trust and understand what the package manager plans to install, remove, or replace. Avoid adding unrelated third-party repositories to force a Plasma upgrade.
  3. Install the supported Plasma packages. Proceed using the distribution-provided update path for your release. The exact command or graphical steps depend on the distribution; there is no universal KDE command that safely applies across Linux systems.
  4. Finish the session change. Reboot or start a new desktop session if the package manager or distribution instructions require it.

If Plasma 5.26 is not offered

Do not try to force the upgrade with packages built for another release. Wait for a supported repository route, or consider moving to a distribution release that provides the Plasma version you want. A distribution upgrade is a separate system change, so follow that distribution’s own release-upgrade instructions rather than treating it as a Plasma-only package update.

Backports and third-party repositories can have different support and recovery arrangements from the distribution’s standard repositories. Before using one, verify who maintains it, that it explicitly supports your distribution release, and how to undo the change if the desktop does not work as expected.

Try Plasma without replacing your installed desktop

If you want to evaluate Plasma before changing your system, KDE recommends trying a live image booted from a USB disk; its Plasma 5.26 announcement also mentions Docker images as another way to test Plasma. A live session lets you explore the desktop without first upgrading your installed packages. Follow the image provider’s instructions and check that the image actually contains the Plasma version you want to try.
