Choose a specific target role, then rebuild your resume around truthful evidence that your past work, projects, or training match its requirements. A layoff does not erase relevant accomplishments, and you do not have to put the reason for leaving on your resume. Keep your work history clear, explain a gap honestly if asked, and tailor each application to the vacancy.
1. Choose a target role before rewriting
“A career change” is too broad to guide a resume. Start with one role or a closely related group of roles you are genuinely considering. Review several current job descriptions for that work and note the duties, skills, qualifications, and language that recur. This helps you distinguish what employers actually request from assumptions based on job titles or general career advice.
Compare possible target roles by the requirements they share, any mandatory license or qualification, the strength of your evidence for each requirement, and the time or cost of closing a real skills gap. The sources cited here do not rank career paths or establish which change is most likely to succeed.
2. Map your experience to the new role
For each recurring requirement, write down a specific example from paid work, volunteering, training, or a project. Identify what you did, the skill it demonstrates, and any concrete result you can support. Then describe the example in language a hiring manager in the new field will understand—without claiming authority, technical experience, or results you did not have.

Make the connection explicit rather than expecting an employer to infer it from an old job title. The UK National Careers Service notes, “You may have transferable skills which you could use in a different job to what you were doing before.” Its guidance is UK-specific: Redundancy and dealing with losing your job. The US Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work similarly advises career changers to highlight transferable skills and explain how they apply to the new position: 5 Tips for Changing Careers.
- Requirement: What recurring duty, skill, or qualification does the posting name?
- Your evidence: What actual task or result shows you can meet it?
- Resume wording: How can you explain that evidence in terms familiar to the target role?
- Gap: Is there a requirement you cannot yet substantiate, and is training or another experience-building step worthwhile?
3. Put the strongest relevant evidence first
Use a short summary near the top to name the role you are pursuing and the most relevant capabilities you can demonstrate. Follow it with skills and accomplishments that support that direction. Keep employer names, job titles, and dates legible so the reader can still understand where and when you gained your experience.
Rewrite accomplishment bullets to emphasize relevant work rather than simply listing old responsibilities. For example, if a target role asks for coordination, use a verifiable example of coordinating people, schedules, or deliverables in your previous job. Do not rename an old position to sound like the target job or imply that a related task was your primary role if it was not.

4. Choose a format that shows both skills and work history
No resume format guarantees a screening result. Choose based on how well it presents your evidence, keeps your dates understandable, and follows the vacancy’s instructions.
| Format | How it presents transferable skills | How it presents chronology | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Skills appear in summaries and job entries; the reader must connect them to the new role. | Dates and progression are prominent. | Useful when a clear work history helps explain how you gained relevant experience. |
| Functional | Groups experience by skills, bringing capabilities forward. | Can de-emphasize dates and job progression. | May suit a career change, but limited work-history detail can be misread or create parsing problems with some application tracking systems, according to CareerOneStop. |
| Combination | Highlights relevant skills and accomplishments near the top. | Retains a detailed work history. | Can refocus experience for a career change without obscuring employers, roles, or dates. |
CareerOneStop recommends a clean, single-column layout and gives general guidance of one to two pages; this is not a universal page limit. Follow the employer’s instructions and local conventions. Its format guidance explains the trade-offs: CareerOneStop Resume Guide: Formatting.
5. Tailor the resume to each application
Keep a reliable base resume, then make focused changes for each vacancy. Adjust the summary, the order of skills, and the accomplishment details so the most relevant evidence answers the posting’s requirements. Use accurate language from the job description where it fits your experience; do not add keywords that imply skills you lack.

For US federal applications, follow the specific announcement and USAJOBS instructions. USAJOBS says federal agencies accept resumes up to two pages and advises applicants to tailor the resume to the announcement’s qualifications. That limit is for federal applications, not a general private-sector rule: USAJOBS: How do I write a resume for a federal job?
US state guidance also recommends targeted versions for occupational or employer needs. For example, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development discusses functional resumes for highlighting transferable skills and tailoring resumes: Resume Writing Guidance.
6. Decide whether to mention the layoff
You do not have to put a reason for leaving on your resume. If a short note would clarify the departure, keep it factual and neutral—for example, “Role ended following an organizational restructuring,” if that is accurate. The UK National Careers Service presents explaining redundancy as an option, not an obligation, and notes that it may have resulted from restructuring or budget cuts. Keep the relevant accomplishments from the role either way.

Depending on the application and circumstances, a cover letter or interview may be a better place to give context. Avoid lengthy explanations, blame, or language that makes a company-wide decision sound like a performance issue.

Keep dates accurate rather than hiding or disguising a gap. An employer may ask about time between jobs; prepare a brief, straightforward explanation and be open about what you did. If you completed relevant coursework, volunteered, or worked on a project during that period, include it only if it actually happened and helps support your application. Do not describe learning or personal activity as employment.
The UK National Careers Service advises applicants to be open about work-history gaps and focus on genuine skills or learning: Explain a gap in employment.

8. Address real skills gaps before paying for training
If the same target-role postings repeatedly require a skill, license, or qualification you do not have, decide whether closing that gap is worth the time and cost. UK guidance points to courses, apprenticeships, and Skills Bootcamps, while noting that access to free qualifications can depend on eligibility. Check current local eligibility and course details before committing; completing training is not a guarantee of employment.
Do not add a course simply to make the resume look fuller. Training is most useful when it addresses a requirement you identified in actual vacancies and gives you a credible way to demonstrate the skill.
